    “Before Abraham was, I AM”

    As you follow the journey of Sheik Abram from Ur to Haran through Canaan to Egypt and back to the land of the Lord’s promise we see Abraham’s enduring faith in the LORD. Moses records it, the writer of Hebrews references it and the Lord Jesus speaks of a father of our faith, Abraham.

    “.. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.”

    Haran, halfway to the Promised Land from Ur

    Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

    Genesis 27:11 KJV

    Some born in the 20th century to a generation of the 80’s may recognize a love song about 500 miles. Or if you were born to an earlier generation of the 60’s you may recall hearing the whistle blow, 500 miles, 500 miles..

    Ur was a great kingdom, the big town Terah had left some 250 miles behind to settle in Haran. Haran was a small town, home for a while, from where again Abram would have to leave family and familiarity.

    The Lord called Abram to sojourn further to a land of promise. (Sorry, no trains — they all walked and took what earthly possessions they could on the journey.) It’s a long walk, first from Ur and then from Haran to an unseen promised land. Abram was becoming an old man blessed with riches and servants, but no son.

    Abram, Sheik of Ur – Blessed by God

    My original posts from this series reveal why we can call Abram a Sheik. Our focus, however, is why the Messiah Jesus responds to claims of religious or cultural traditions of Abraham and Moses.

    “We are offspring of Abraham.”

    In effect Jesus tells us, ‘Yes, the Jews are sons of Abraham.’ Yet you may forfeit your inheritance by choosing ‘tradition’ over the faith of Abraham.

    Photo of 2 sheiks. شيوخ šuyūḫ [ʃuju:x])—also transliterated sheekh, sheik, sheyikh, shaykh, shayk, shekh, shaik and shaikh—is an honorific title in the Arabic language.

    By faith Abraham believed in God’s promise. And Jesus blesses and adopts those who believe into the same blessing of God.
