What are the Gospels?

FOUR Gospels:

GOOD NEWS! (That’s what Gospel means.)

Matthew, Mark, Luke & John begin the New Testament proclaiming the Good News of Israel’s long-awaited Messiah and talk of JESUS Christ.

The four Gospels are first hand witness + proclaiming GOOD NEWS

  • by two Jewish Apostles of the Messiah JESUS, Matthew & John
  • Two gentile (non-Jewish) followers of THE WAY of Jesus Christ, Mark & Luke, who proclaim the GOSPEL recorded from witness of Peter, Paul and other Apostles and disciples of JESUS in the first century.

READ the Good News of the Messiah and Savior Jesus from accounts of His twelve Apostles & others witnessing the resurrection of the Lord Jesus from the four Gospels of the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

A Glance at the Gospel of John

Previously we have studied John’s Gospel in a multi-year SERIES.

Please read today’s overview of the Gospel of Jesus Christ written by John with an eye toward its fit with his three Apostolic Epistles.

    The Purpose of John’s Book

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book.

But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

    One Last Gospel

We introduced John, Son of Zebedee in our Apostolic faith SERIES as a young man in his twenties. John, along with his older brother James and Andrew (brother of Simon), had been discipled by John the Baptist.

Our own impression of Jesus’ youngest Disciple may come from the mount of transfiguration..

Or even more likely we view John beside the Lord (at a long table) at the Last Supper, in a painting of the Italian Renaissance painter, Leonardo DaVinci.

And some Christians picture the young man John with the women at the foot of the Cross of our crucified Lord..

.. or running to the empty tomb of their risen friend JESUS along with Simon Peter.

Recalling John’s witness as a young man

Some Christians wonder why John’s Gospel is so different from the three synoptic gospels.

In fact, John wrote his Gospel of these historic events many years after they took place.

For a better picture of several decades of the Apostle’s life after his thirties and leading up to John writing his Gospel (and then three Epistles), let’s look at what the Elder chose to write about his earlier days in the context of ~A.D 30-85.

The Apostle reveals his purpose [John 20:30-31, above] near the end of his gospel. A quick look at some events at the time of the writing of all four Gospels should help.

We will add a few more details next time in the context of ACTS of the APOSTLES.

    Timeline leading to John’s Gospel

John’s Good News for those who will believe

Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

    Gospel of John 1:1

The Apostle John realized that in seeking the Messiah of Israel — he had met ALMIGHTY GOD — in the flesh, in the Person of JESUS!

Moses’ account of Genesis was simply a Beginning of adam — a beginning of the heavens and the earth and of all the LORD had created — but NOT the Beginning of God.

John also reminds that the Beginning was NOT the beginning of the Spirit or of the Person of Jesus, the Son of God before all time.

And the Word was made flesh,

    and dwelt among us,

(and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)

    full of grace and truth.

    Gospel of John 1:14 KJV

Then the Apostle moves from that which was before time and all creation, to his own discovery as a young disciple of John the Baptist, of JESUS, the only begotten of the Father.

Begotten, not made; as the Apostolic creeds of the faith confess.

    b. from above

Nicodemus inquires of Jesus about God one night

Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

ἄνωθεν - ánōthen - from above, from a higher place
    - (born) of things which come from heaven or God

In addition to signs and miracles witnessed by many men in several places, John’s gospel presents evidence that some Bible scholars among the Pharisees became convinced to worship Jesus Christ.

He provides other proofs of Jesus as the Messiah the Christ of Scripture promised by Moses and the Prophets, from a private conversation known to this Disciple John of the Lord’s inner circle.

Jesus’ beloved Disciple clearly connects the Spirit of God the Father with the Son and and Holy Spirit, as well as those who the Father has chosen for eternal life.

“Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born [from above] again G509.’

    Gospel of John 3:7 LSB

“He who comes from above G509 is above all, he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

    John 3:31 LSB

Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above G509; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

    John 19:11

The Apostle John makes clear that Jesus and the Spirit who gives life are ‘from above.’

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Gospel of John 4:24 King James Version

Christ Taught from and Fulfilled Scripture

Imagine John, the women embalming their crucified Lord and others discovering an empty tomb of JESUS, who had been executed so mercilessly on a bloody Cross!

body of Jesus outside tomb of Joseph with others

    John recalls:

The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this sanctuary, and will You raise it up in three days?”

But He was speaking about the sanctuary of His body.

So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

    Gospel of John 2:20-22 LSB

The Apostle recalls in his Gospel the most important facts, that JESUS had been raised from the dead after three days — and Jesus had prophesied his resurrection very pubically in fulfillment of Scripture.

“Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”

    Gospel of John 7:42 LSB

Prior to the Lord’s betrayal, Jesus had even revealed fulfillment of Scripture by Judas.

My enemies speak evil against me,
“When will he die, and his name perish?”
    And when he comes to see me, he speaks worthlessness;
    His heart gathers wickedness to itself;
When he goes outside, he speaks it.
    All who hate me whisper together against me;
Against me, they devise for me calamity, saying,
“A vile thing is poured out upon him,
That when he lies down, he will not rise up again.”

Even my close friend in whom I trusted,
    Who ate my bread,
Has lifted up his heel against me.

    Psalm 31:5-9 LSB

    “I do not speak about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen;

but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.’

    Gospel of John 13:18 LSB

And John recalls Jesus’ prayer in an upper room of Jerusalem when Christ celebrated a new covenant about to fulfill the redemption of blood by this Lamb of God.

“Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent…

“While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

Gospel of John 17:1b-3, 12 LSB

    It’s hard to believe

So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb.

.. he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb.

Easter or Resurrection Sunday is the day the tomb of Jesus is found empty and when the risen Messiah appears risen after His crucifixion on a Corss

So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed.

For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.

Gospel of John 20 excerpt LSB

John, the other disciple who like Simon Peter still did not fully get what JESUS had taught all along, even to these men of His inner circle, witnesses now, decades later in the writing of his Gospel, that it was not until they witnessed the risen Lord and touched Him and ate with Him that they believed all that JESUS had taught.

If I want him to remain…

Again, fifty some years later, John writes how Peter’s doubting and denials remained with John’s near friend and Apostle and how Jesus restored this Rock upon which He would build His Church.

Simon Peter Capernaum Joppa Jerusalem Antioch more acts of Peter
    “Simon, son of Jonah..
    “Feed My sheep.

Then John recalls their proximity to Jesus at that last Passover meal in Jerusalem. The Lord had just said to Peter once again:

    Follow me.

    from John 21:19

    Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them;

the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?”

So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?”

Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!”

    Gospel of John 21:20-22 LSB

NOT all are called to salvation.

Some betray Jesus even though called to the hope of glory.

The Lord Jesus makes His call Personal — to Peter.. to John..

    — to you (if the Father has chosen you for eternal life).

John’s witness of these fifty years prior to recording his Gospel and the three Epistles the Elder is about to write to a troubled and persecuted Church is both corporate and personal.

JESUS had called this Apostle to remain in order that others would answer the Personal call of Jesus to, “Follow Me.”

    John’s Signature as Witness

This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his witness is true.

    Gospel of John 21:24 LSB

And almost as a Post Script John adds (fifty years after these History-changing events) his purpose in writing his Good News:

ἔστιν δὲ καὶ ἄλλα πολλὰ ἃ ἐποίησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἅτινα ἐὰν γράφηται καθ᾽ ἕν οὐδ᾽ αὐτὸν οἶμαι τὸν κόσμον χωρῆσαι τὰ γραφόμενα βιβλία

But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

He is one of us – from Christmas Eve 2013 CE

He IS born in a manger

The baby Jesus, born of the virgin Mary, remains a fond and distant memory in our annual celebrations of the Christ-Mass Holy-days.

Not surprisingly (as I recall that this year is the two-thousand twenty-fifth year of our Lord , as Christians used to call it in the days of Advent Calendars) I discovered my first CHRISTMAS EVE post from AD 2013,

It’s overall place in our current SERIES on The Apostles’ Creed is most fitting.

His timeline of three years of teaching during a mere 30 years in the world as the Son of Man places relevance on the brevity of both His and our mortal lives.

Roger Harned – author, administrator and founder of TalkofJesus.com

Just a few introductory Scriptures here, followed by my original Christmas Eve post of AD 2013. - RH

He is both Shepherd & a sheep for the Sacrifice

Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.

    Psalm 44:11 KJV

Is that not the lot of 2025 CE Christians as well?

Many Christians know this next one from the Gospel:

    All we like sheep have gone astray;

    we have turned every one to his own way;

and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,

yet he opened not his mouth:

he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter..

    Psalm 10:17-18 KJV

LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:

To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,

    SeeingShepherds
    The-Sacrificial-Lamb-Josefa-de-Ayala-ca-1670
    empty tomb

“Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
    who will prepare your way,
3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
    make his paths straight,’”

    Before John the messenger of the Messiah, prior to Isaiah and the Prophets calling us to repentance and announcing the coming of the Lord;

    Before David and the Kingdom of Israel, before Moses and the exodus of God’s chosen from captivity;

    Before Moses and the Law and Commandments;

Before Jacob and Isaac and Abraham (for Jesus said: Before Abraham was, I AM.

Before Adam, before man and before woman, before earth and before the heavens:

    GOD IS.

Thus, God IS and did send unto mankind Himself His only Son, a babe in a humble manger, born of a humble woman betrothed of a humble man, for the work of our redemption, a sheep of sacrifice on the Cross for our salvation. He IS the resurrection and the life.

Are we not prisoners of our many sins?  Do our hearts not suffer in the dungeons of our darkness. Is God not distant from our difficulties and silent in our sufferings?

It was no different 2013 years ago. Yet the beginning of the story of the babe in the manger begins before the beginning.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives – Luke 4:18

In the beginning, the Holy Spirit was with God. The Holy Spirit descended on Christ Jesus, Son of God and He, a man with us, taught us once more the surpassing love and grace of God our Father in heaven.

Before Jesus’ ministry and teaching in the Holy Spirit, before the Son of Man was born in a manger in Bethlehem, He IS God in creation. Now a savior is come. He IS God with man: like every man, a babe, a child, a youth, a young man, and finally a mature man teaching the very word of God. He IS the very word of God! Jesus’ teaching IS the only truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Yet by His own love and the great grace of God our Father, He IS the Lamb of sacrifice for our sins.

Think of Jesus descended into the womb of Mary and born to be worshiped in a lowly manger in this way:

    The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.

Jesus, Son of Man, born of Mary, the Incarnate spoken Word of God the Father. He was with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit in the beginning.

3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

    Genesis 1:

And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Jesus speaks to creation as the Word taught us.

4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Genesis 1: 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.

In the image and likeness of Jesus we were made. In the beginning, adam (man) was without sin, as Jesus, as God: Holy and separated from sin, like the darkness is divided from the light.

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Here is revealed the identity of the babe in the manger: Jesus, heralded by angels and worshiped by shepherds and wise kings; Jesus, the babe smuggled into Egypt by Joseph to escape the sword of Herod; Jesus who would return to Nazareth of Galilee announced by John the Baptist, greatest of all Prophets.

9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.

11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

By His Light and the cloud of His glory He led His own people from the slavery of Egypt to His land of promise. By His own Word He proclaimed His Law of holiness and light for the people of His promise.

God’s own rejected God as a people of God; therefore God came unto His own and also to those who were not His own as a light to the gentiles, to all nations and all peoples.

All who will believe in the only Son of God and truly follow the will of God have become  sons and daughters of God, adopted into the household and heart of His eternal life and overflowing love.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Unto us a child is born, a son of man, the Son of God. His glory was again witnessed by His Apostles and His righteousness seen by all.

15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”)

16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

    The Birth of Jesus Christ

6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths andlaid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

    The Shepherds and the Angels

8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

Thirty-three years later near Golgotha, then departed from Jerusalem:

    Luke 24:

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen.

12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.

Acts 1: 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Christ Jesus, from the beginning to the manger, to the cross, to the tomb, to the resurrection, to walking and witness with men fifty more days, to His ascension, to the heavens above, to return on the clouds.

Do you have a relationship with the greatest love of all, that of God our Father in Heaven, Christ Jesus the Lamb of sacrifice for our sins, and the Holy Spirit counselor of the Most High?

The Revelation of Jesus Christ to John 1:8  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Bow down and worship the Lord our God, Who IS and was and will be: God With Us; Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior.

May the peace of God’s love dwell in your hearts through the grace of our Lord Christ Jesus, who came to a lowly manger that we might bow even lower to worship His Holy Name in this Holy time: Christ Mass, 2013

    Amen.

NEXT – Pentecost 2025 of the Common Era

Doesn't Holy Week from Palm Sunday to EASTER look about the same every year?

I wrote a SERIES for Lent last year too — which of course culminated with Easter Sunday.

Check it out (from Easter, 2024) if you'd like.

And my LATEST POSTS in 2025 CE reflect an OLD TESTEMENT approach to LENT, also concluding with a look at Resurrection Sunday.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. JOHN 3:16 green man

Our focus for EASTER 2025 CE has been from the Gospel of John (just before your familiar memorized verse).

    Gospel of John 3:14 ESV

But what did JESUS do next?

IF you have READ my 2025 CE EASTER post (above), then you may realize that the GOSPEL — in John’s case — has been preached for a number of years.

    ~ A.D. 85 – the Gospel of APOSTLE JOHN

Do the math and you will easily see that since Christ rose from death sometime around AD 30-33 according to most historical estimates, then EASTER had been celebrated by saints of The Way for OVER 50 YEARS by the time the Apostle recorded:

    • his Gospel,
    • three epistles to the Church and
    • the Revelation of Jesus Christ to John!
      • – with specific mention of the witness of saints of seven churches as examples to us.

To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs,

appearing to them over a period of forty days

and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.

Acts of the Apostles 1:3 NASB95

    φανερόω – JESUS Manifested

After this, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way:

.. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Gospel of John 21:1 ,14 CSB

    The Apostle Peter writes:

He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was revealed in these last times for you.

    1 Peter 1:20 CSB

And last of all — as to the untimely birth — he appeared also to me, writes the Apostle Paul.

    1 Corinthians 15:8 YLT

    • JESUS’ historical crucifixion on a Roman cross is an undisputable fact.
    • Christ’s resurrection after three days — in His recognizable resurrection body, with the wounds of the Cross –– and in the very Spirit of the same JESUS of Nazareth the Son of Man known personally to hundreds of disciples and thousands of first century witnesses — is true and verifiable fact REJECTED by those who also deny the One Living God of all creation and all of its created.

“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,

..but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.

    Gospel of John 17a,18b CSB

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

    Gospel of John 3:14-15 CSB

Lifted up + Earthly things you do not believe

    Father, Son and Pentecost

John closes his proclamation and witness of Apostolic Good News:

    JESUS also said,

“..The one who has seen me has seen the Father.

AND as you know from our 2025 Easter post, the Lord challenged Nicodemus:

“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.”

Now through the testimony of both Peter and John recorded by Luke in Acts of the Apostles we will glance at the Trinity and introduction of the Spirit on Pentecost ~AD 33.

    40 days, and then Pentecost

And while they were gathered together, He commanded them: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me discuss. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

.. they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.

    [Two angels instructed the Eleven]

..” This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”

Are you who do not believe intimidated by that?

Perhaps you should believe in the Lord Christ Jesus, who will return finally for the Judgment.

    The Holy Spirit at Pentecost

The following from Bible Hub Book Summary of ACTS 2:

Please consider its Gospel application in your own brief mortal life. - RH

Acts 2 is a powerful chapter that introduces the Holy Spirit’s dynamic presence in the lives of believers and demonstrates the transformation it brings. The followers of Jesus move from being a fearful, waiting group to a bold, active community witnessing for Christ. The chapter underscores the compelling power of the Gospel message and the magnetic draw of a loving, unified, and Spirit-led community. This chapter serves as a timeless model for the Church, inspiring us to be led by the Spirit, devoted to God’s Word, committed to fellowship, and actively involved in meeting the needs of those around us.

On the Day of Pentecost, the disciples are together when a sound like a violent wind fills the house, and they see what seems to be tongues of fire that separate and rest on each of them. Filled with the Holy Spirit, they start to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enables them. A diverse crowd gathers, bewildered because each person hears their native language spoken. Some are amazed and wonder what it means, while others mock the disciples, suggesting they are drunk.

The CHURCHES and their saints in every place have become dear to the Apostles — including Paul.

But for those early years after the RESURRECTION of the Lord Jesus Christ +++ Pentecost continued to provide evidence and witness of the Trinity – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Twenty years after Christ’s ascension now — twenty years after the first signs of the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem on Pentecost — and during the remaining years of the mortal lives of the Apostles PENTECOST provided the saints of The Way a gospel witness of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ — who will come again in GLORY at the last Day.
