ICBI II – THE CHICAGO STATEMENT ON BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICS
Summit II – November 10-13, 1982
A laymen’s introduction
If you made it this far in our theological look at DOCTRINE, please don’t abandon your own search for Biblical Truth now. ALL you need here is a definition.
(Although I’ll share a simple answer & links to more detailed definitions,
ASK YOUR PASTOR 🙂 :
What is HERMENEUTICS?
(Don't forget to observe his facial reaction before the stammering short answer IF you haven't offered to buy him a coffee or a several-course meal! :)
Beyond just a QUIZ on DOCTRINE
IN my previous post I took a quick shortcut from Summit I foundational issues, without connecting the theological dots of thought process and philosophy outlined here to Summit III, which will follow this current page.
Hermeneutics is a science of interpretive principles of historical text using logical methodology to apply the original intended meaning to contemporary translation, historically used by Jews and Christians to discern God’s meaning from Holy Scripture.
After a brief introduction, ICBI Summit II continues from where Summit I left off.
YOU WILL want to READ, AFFIRM & DENY the 25 ARTICLES.
(Most likely, only a rare pastor friend will even glance at the deep theological dive into today’s topics outlined below.)
AFTER you have studied the Articles linked again below, you will want to get to our final page which goes to contemporary application.
ARTICLE IX (below) addresses ‘Hermeneutics’ affirming its application and denying its misapplication.
25 Summit II Articles with Affirmations & Denials
i.e. Article XXV
We affirm that the only type of preaching which sufficiently conveys the divine revelation and its proper application to life is that which faithfully expounds the text of Scripture as the Word of God.
We deny that the preacher has any message from God apart from the text of Scripture.
