    All you need is Love Love Love

    Or should I say, Love, love, love, love perhaps four times?

    (As just a bit earlier than the Beatles another Englishman, Clive Staples, pointed out 4 loves — each at least somewhat different from the others?)

    Christians throw around the LOVE jargon rather vaguely and with much overlap (as does the world).

    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. JOHN 3:16 green man

    • The word, “Love” occurs over 500 times in the Bible
    • translated more than 200 times from New Testament Greek into the English Standard Version

    Let’s have some Biblical intercourse about the real definitions of the Biblical loves to which C.S. Lewis referred.

    The Four Loves

    C.S. Lewis, born just a couple of years before my grandfathers, capitalized on this in his popular RADIO program and published a book called THE FOUR LOVES in A..D. 1960 (when I was only ten and John Lennon was just twenty).


    To outline Lewis’ approach briefly:

    The Four Loves was Lewis’ look at some of the different loves described in Greek thought: familial or affectionate love (storge); friendship (philia); romantic love (eros); and spiritual love (agape) in the light of Christian commentary on ordinate loves.

    Although in A.D. 1960 Lewis began elsewhere, today let’s start with the world’s contemporary favorite:

    Eros – ἔρως

    Eros is the Greek term for romantic or passionate love. While the word itself is not used in the New Testament, the concept is present in the biblical understanding of marriage and the intimate relationship between husband and wife. Eros is seen as a gift from God, intended to be expressed within the covenant of marriage.

    The Song of Solomon [O.T.] is often cited as a biblical celebration of eros, highlighting the beauty and intensity of romantic love.

    Affection (storge)

    Affection covers an array of loves. Like animals, the care of mother to babe is a picture of affection. It relies on the expected and the familiar. Lewis describes it as humble.

    It’s the familiarity of, “the people with whom you are thrown together in the family, the college, the mess, the ship, the religious house,” says Lewis.

    My long search for affection in the Bible

    I do not mean affection literally (in English), but a Greek word for affection, STORGE.

    God blessed me with an additional embrace of His Personal and mysterious, complex love for us through searching aimlessly for love in the Bible. Only after researching further in other commentaries did I connect this word of affection with the Lord’s additional loves we experience so personally.

    God’s affection in the Person of His only Son JESUS was there all along and I had missed it.

    ..says Lewis. The affection for the people always around us, in the normal day-to-day of life, is the majority of the love we experience, even if we don’t label it.

    But in addition to our affection meaning devoted, when Paul writes to the Romans, the word the Apostle uses here for love obviously applies to brotherly love – philadelphia.

    I also liked his mention to ‘honor‘ each other above your SELF.

    Seems familiar to JESUS’ second summary point from the Commandments. LOVE actually appears in BOTH of these commandments cited by our Lord:

    Jesus said to him,

    “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.
    And the second is like it:
    You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
    On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

    What is the greatest love?

    ἀγαπάω – agapaō

    *Thou shalt love kyrios thy theos.

    Do we not hold FEAR rather than embrace the LORD our theos as a pillar of fire?

    But what about the Lord Jesus’ second commandment (which we often claim as our ‘GOLDEN RULE?’

    And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

    ἀγαπάω – agapaō

    *Thou shalt love thy plēsion [neighbour]…

    The Lord seems to mention others as at least equal to our need for self-love, if not more honor as Paul suggests in writing to the Church in Rome. 

    This LOVE is the SAME Love, that is: agapaō !

    Storge – Other Loves plus Devotion

    Although the specific term storge is not used in the New Testament, the concept is evident in passages that emphasize family relationships and responsibilities. Romans 12:10 


    φιλόστοργος – philostorgos – adjective

    a Greek conjunction PHILO plus STORGOS - Do you see both LOVES?

    And look at its definition:

    1. the mutual love of parents and children and wives and husbands
    2. loving affection, prone to love, loving tenderly
      • chiefly of the reciprocal tenderness of parents and children
    Which brings us to a third love C.S. Lewis highlights:

    Philia (φιλία)

    Friendship is the love dismissed.

    “To the Ancients, Friendship seemed the happiest and most fully human of all loves,”

    says Lewis,

    “the crown of life and the school of virtue.

    And at this writing in ~ A.D. 1958 or 1960 Lewis laments of such philos friendships: 

    The modern world, in comparison, ignores it.” Why?

    Perhaps we know it’s the most time consuming, the least celebrated, the one we could live without.

    Can we?

    Even in 2025 Common Era time-crunching christian church gatherings pressed to entertain all sinners in these last days?


    Discovering Phila-Delphia

    YES, it’s a great adjective describing the relational fruit of Biblical Christians.

    “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends  G5384.

    JESUS, the Son of Man and Son of God EMBRACES His disciples as close friends.

    And you may have guessed it: 
    The relational word the beloved Apostle John uses here for LOVE is agapē.

    φιλέω – Strong’s G5368 – phileō

    a verb with similar meaning that we won’t want to miss

    1. to love
      • to approve of
      • to like
      • sanction
      • to treat affectionately or kindly, to welcome, befriend
    2. to show signs of love
      • to kiss
    3. to be fond of doing
      • be wont [an accustomed familiarity], use to do

    Perhaps the most convicting encounter with JESUS using this word phileō for LOVE occurs in His most personal encounter with the Apostle Peter after our Lord’s resurrection.

    Here’s an excerpt:

    “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?”

    He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love G5368 You.”

    “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”

    He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love G5368 You.”

    He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love G5368 Me?”


    Now returning to our compound Greek word for Philadelphia we must consider one additional connection of LOVE:

    The Gospel of John

    • What does a DEATH have to do with GOOD NEWS?

    Read any obituary of a famous teacher, even a celebrity leader of men and you will discover one thing: They left behind everything. Now the legacy of this body buried or scattered to the dust of the earth must decay.

    We memorialize men and women, especially the same many idolize in life. Those who loved any breathing soul speak of the dead in the past. Some ask, ‘IF there is a God, what hope does this departed soul have now?

    The Apostle John answers these deep longings of the souls of mortal man.

    More specifically, the LORD GOD reveals the only Good News about death and life is through the Lord Jesus Christ – born of man, buried like all who must suffer death.

    By His words we have hope, but by His death we have redemption from sin and judgment.

    For by Jesus’ RESURRECTION in BODY and SPIRIT, followers of the Way of Jesus in life will follow Him to certain resurrection of the body and of our soul.

    Do you desire an eternal after-life in the Presence of the LORD our GOD? Find it in the Good News of Christ Jesus.


    Witnesses to Jesus’ Resurrection

    In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.

    The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

    John presents man as either belonging to one of two things: the darkness or the light. There is no in between. The darkness is associated with death, while the light is associated with life. – BlueLetterBible intro to John

    No Gospel addresses ‘LIFE’ more than John and no book of the Bible more than the 150 Psalms.

    We now return to John’s witness of Jesus in a third appearance to Disciples along the shore of the Sea of Tiberias after His resurrection.

    Trusting that you read Witnesses to Jesus Risen! – the Eleven, a Passing Witness, recall the 1st. century A.D. events disciples of the Way of Jesus encountered even before John wrote his Gospel — after A.D. 85 & before A.D. 100.

    Remember to see John’s Gospel with eyes of a 1st. century believer who already knows that Peter was martyred for Christ perhaps decades earlier.

    Peter’s witness of Jesus’ Resurrection

    No Disciple of Jesus impacts the Church more than Simon Peter. After paying little attention to interactions between Peter and Jesus, today we will look closer into this loving relationship of discipleship.

    Previously in Witnesses to Jesus Risen! – the Eleven, a Passing Witness. the Apostles had seen Jesus in the flesh twice, except Thomas only once, in Jerusalem. John names five present now and mentions two others, but not by name.

    Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”John 21:3

    It’s now close to daylight after a night catching no fish.

    John 21:

    7 The disciple, the one Jesus loved, said to Peter, “It is the Lord!”

    Peter and John who humbly refers to himself as ‘the disciple Jesus loved’, along with his older brother James have been Jesus’ three closest Disciples. During three years of the Lord’s earthly teaching Jesus had often shared understanding He does not reveal to others.

    In his Gospel the beloved Disciple speaks of their close friend Simon Peter who has already been martyred for Christ with loving compassion; not eulogizing or elevating Peter in any way, but giving honest witness to Peter’s actions and failings in life.

    John’s empathy for Peter’s heart after denying the Lord is clearly evident. The Disciples remembered how Jesus had prophesied Peter’s denials before the cock crowed at dawn that fateful evening prior to His arrest. Peter of course had denied that it could ever happen.

    Peter, now with his former boldness, dives into Lake Tiberius and swims to shore (just two hundred cubits, about 100 yd. or 90 m.) away from Jesus who is broiling fish over a fire.

    The other six Disciples return in small boats with the catch of ‘the multitude of fishes’ [KJV], which they then account as a total of 153 large fish filling a net that remains untorn by the huge catch.

    Three Questions of Restoration

    Remember, John witnesses this to Christians after Peter’s faithful death for the Lord Jesus Christ. Here is what John testifies:

    15 Now when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?”

    (We will examine Peter’s answers separately.)

    16 He said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”

    17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”

    The common language of the Apostles in addition to their local Aramaic is Greek. English translations lack subtle detail connecting context in these scriptures.

    Simon son of Jonas – Σίμων Ἰωνᾶ

    Andrew and Simon’s father is John, or Jonas.

    • John, Peter’s other friend of Jesus’ inner circle besides his own brother James, calls him Simon Peter or simply Peter.
    • however Jesus calls him only Simon or the Lord addresses John & Jamesfriend rather formally as: Simon son of Jonas.
      • Could Jesus also be reminding the Disciples of His many prophesies connecting His Resurrection to the Prophet Jonah?

    Note what Jesus asks Simon, yet note subtle differences in Simon’s responses which show the depth of wounds of Peter’s guilt before he understands Jesus’ tender requests.

    (Again recall that John tells this to readers who already know that Peter has died for his faith in Jesus.)

    Jesus’ questions to Simon Peter

    English also clouds our understanding of overlapping Greek meanings of love.

    Three similar questions to Simon from Jesus in John 21: v.15, v.16 & v.17, but not quite the same.

    • Do you agapaō me more than these?
    • Do you agapaō me? (No comparison this time to the six Disciples who came to shore in the boat with the fish.)
    • Do you phileō me?
    Is your, “yes Lord” really your “yes?”
    Let's move on to Simon's responses. (Will his responses match?)
    1. “Yes, Lord; You know that I [phileō] love You.”
      • Jesus had asked, “Do you agapaō Me more than these?”
      • Do you [love] Me more than these (six) Disciples love Me?
      • Simon only confirms his phileō for Jesus.
    2. “Yes, Lord; You know that I [phileō] love You.”
      • Jesus now focuses on Simon asking simply, “Do you agapaō me?”
      • Simon simply repeats his previous response of “I [phileō] You.”
    3. “Lord, You know all things; You know that I [phileō] love You.”
      • Jesus has already asked Simon, “Do you [agapaō] me?”
      • Simon had twice responded, “I [phileō] You.”
      • Perhaps to contrast Simon’s answers to His other two questions the Lord now asks him, “Do you [phileō] me?

    What does Jesus mean by “love?”

    Having some understanding of the Greek words for LOVE is a pre-requisite for our 21st century understanding.

    Let’s begin with Simon Peter’s answer to Jesus.

    phileō love:

    It is the verb meaning:

    • to approve of, like, sanction, treat affectionately or kindly,
    • to welcome, befriend

    Are you only this to Jesus?

    To your fellow followers of Christ who also call Him Lord is your witness mere approval of Jesus?

    What a ‘friend’ we have in Jesus,‘ we once sang.

    • Is that what the Lord asks of Simon Peter?
    • Is Christ not so much more than ‘a friend’ to those who follow Him?

    ‘..All our sins and griefs to bear!” continues the old hymn proclaiming Jesus a friend, but urging us to take everything to God in prayer.

    Simon has just witnessed Jesus’ Sacrifice for our sins on the Cross.

    • What friend can bear your sins other than Jesus?

    “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

    John 15:13 KJV – Jesus proclaiming His own death to the Disciples, of agapē love

    Simon Peter, once again emboldened by Jesus resurrection, offers no rock of confidence in his measured response to His Lord and Savior.

    Jesus was not asking Simon Peter for his renewed friendship. So what was the Lord asking him?

    agapē love:

    It is the noun for:

    • affection, good will, benevolence, brotherly love,
    • charity or a feast of charitability (like a generous family meal of Thanksgiving),

    All active, rather than passive acceptance of another. Jesus first question asks Peter to stand firm in His love of their friends.

    Jesus asks in effect,

    “Do you think (Simon), that because you greeted Me first (perhaps with an expected kiss of phileō just as Judas Iscariot had in Gethsemane), — do you therefore believe that you agapē Me more that those who did not jump from your boat to reach Me first?

    (And recall what John had witnessed of Peter when they first ran to the empty tomb.) Peter lost that physical race with John, but it did not matter who was first or who came to Jesus last. What did matter was the Lord’s commands.

    On the night in which He was betrayed Jesus gave them a new command.

    (It is this same endearing greeting of their Master the Disciples have just heard from Peter’s boat.)

    34 “I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

    • Which LOVE do you suppose Jesus uses in this NEW COMMANDMENT to the Disciples?
    agapaō:

    It is the verb root of agapē love. Yet its own root may also share in actions associated with the verb phileō. (We won’t take time to dwell on this.)

    • of persons
      • to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly
    • of things
      • to be well pleased, to be contented at or with a thing

    Three times Jesus uses agapaō in His New Commandment to the Apostles and then the Lord continues by applying agapē love as evidence to others that these are His disciples.

    “By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.”

    Jesus’ New Commands to Simon Peter

    We have examined with some detail the context of Jesus’ questions to Simon that John witnesses in his Good News to believers long after Peter’s own death.

    My Love – 4 – a Love Feast

    “There is a love of God inexplicable, except by our inclusion in His love feast.

    This love of God is to be sought and treasured, though none can earn this highest of all loves. It is the upward call well-known to the world, yet rejected by the worldly.

    John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

    God gave us Jesus Christ! His love is sacrifice for our sins – and we are ALL sinners.

    Agape  (pronounced: ag’-a-pe) The name Agape or “love-feast,” as an expression denoting the brotherly common meals of the early church… 

    Agape is much more than this, common meals and communion being just one visible evidence of God’s love in the community of the church. This “agape love” appears throughout the New Testament, again the evidence of Christ Jesus in the life of Christians as part of the lives of believers:

    • affection, good will, love, benevolence, brotherly love, charity and other Spirit-given practical application of the benefit of Christ in the lives of the body of believers, His church.

    Hear the caution of Jesus, you cautious or straying believer:

    But I know that you do not have the love of God within you.

    – John 5:42

    Agape is the word for love Jesus uses here.

    Would you have this be our Lord’s judgment on you unless you repent? Jesus continues:

    How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? – John 5:44

    God is love; but each of us must accept God’s love and be part of the love feast of Christ’s overflowing love for us shared in His Blood of the Cross.

    C.S. Lewis addresses five loves: the first being our ‘liking and loves for the sub-human:’ animals, the beauty of nature, food and the like. The other four are human loves for humans.

    I have reordered Lewis’ treatment of The Four Loves. We have already spoken of friendship (between equal humans) and affection (between humans unequal in their relationship: parent and child). I have left Eros and specifically the love between a man and a woman (man & wife) until last. Lewis concludes his book with this highest and most important of loves: agape. I cannot focus our thought here on this love any better than Lewis.

    “For most of us the true rivalry lies between the self and the human Other, not yet between the human Other and God. It is dangerous to press upon a man the duty of getting beyond earthly love when his real difficulty lies in getting so far.”

    Love one another. A familiar challenge? Yet Lewis states the difficulty of us experiencing this highest love of God when we cannot get beyond loving others as God loves all of us.

    Lewis points to the moral of a story of St. Augustine after grieving over the death of a dear friend.

    “This is what comes, he says, of giving one’s heart to anything but God. All human beings pass away. Do not let your happiness depend on something you may lose. If love is to be a blessing, not a misery, it must be for the only Beloved who will never pass away. Of course this is excellent sense. Don’t put your goods in a leaky vessel. Don’t spend too much on a house you may be turned out of.”

    Do you believe, then, in God? Why would you not trust God with the love of your soul? God IS. Christ Jesus IS. Would you not also have your love last for ever?

    Lewis concludes “The Four Loves” as follows (after which I will have a little to add):

    “Perhaps, for many of us, all experience merely defines, so to speak, the shape of that gap where our love of God ought to be. It is not enough. It is something.

    If we cannot ‘practice the presence of God’ it is something to practice the absence of God, to become increasingly aware of our unawareness till we feel like men who should stand beside a great cataract and hear no noise, or like a man in a story who looks in a mirror and finds no face there, or a man in a dream who stretches out his hand to visible objects and gets no sensation of touch. To know that one is dreaming is to be no longer perfectly asleep. But for news of the fully waking world you must go to my betters.”

    Love & Charity – Connection between God & feast in His love

    John 15:9-11 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.

    Abide in my love.

    10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

    11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

    Jesus commands: Abide in my love (agape).  Learn the application of living in this agape love of God by reading the linked definition and scriptures of ‘abide,’ a word falling from use in our temporal fleshly culture.

    The Greek word for love with which Jesus begins by saying the Father has it for Him and He has is for us is: agapaōBy definition: to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly. 

    WELCOME to the feast of GOD’S LOVE.

    We do NOT deserve an invitation. God loves Jesus. Jesus loves you. (This I know, for the Bible tells us so.) A message of love so simple and profound, yet so clearly unattainable by anyone lacking a trusting and child-like faith in Almighty God, our loving Heavenly Father.

    “IF, you keep Jesus’ Commandments” our Lord says.

    Do you keep and abide and live in the Commandments of Christ Jesus?

    In fact, it is agape love Jesus gives to the lawyer’s of “What is the greatest Commandment?”

    Matthew 22:37-38 And he said to him, “You shall love [agapaō] the Lord your God with all your heart [kardia] and with all your soul[psychē] and with all your mind [dianoia]. This is the great and first commandment.

    God loves. God provides the banquet of love.

    It is by the charity of God that we sinners saved have been invited into the joy and celebration of the love of God in Christ Jesus.

    Let us not forget to extend this love of God in Christ Jesus into our loves for all others in this brief life in the flesh and lasting joy of God’s eternal feast.

    And remembering the words of our Teacher to His learners (disciples) prior to the love feast by which He set His example and remembrance – communion:

    “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love [agapē] for one another.” – John 13:35

    O, the joy of LOVE awaiting us at the banquet table of heaven with our Lord and King, Christ Jesus!
