    Jesus’ Commandment

    “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” – John 15:13 – NKJV 

    Christ Jesus, who would lay down His life for us as sacrifice and redemption for our sins, tells the Disciples how God’s love is unconditional and how God’s love is overflowing beyond description.

    But what about our love for God? What about our love for Jesus?

    I cling to my flesh; I remember my sinful desires. I believe that Jesus died for me, but if He wants me to “follow” Him, I don’t think I can do it. (Isn’t this what we all think when we resist doing what we know God wants us to do?)

    While we brandish our ‘freedom’ to choose to do whatever we want (perhaps even as ‘grace’), most of us struggle with two principles of relationship taught by Jesus Christ: sacrifice and obedience.

    We want to ignore the advice of Jesus (whom we call, ‘Lord‘) when he said:

    “Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” – John 12:25

    And:

    And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” – Luke 9:23

    These sound a lot like ‘conditions’ from Christ Jesus (whom we call, ‘Lord‘). For that matter, another thing Jesus said (which we would rather ignore) is:

    “… whoever does not obey [apeitheō] the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” – John 3:36b

    Are you apathetic about Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

    Jesus asked the crowds who claimed His Name:

    “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” – Luke 6:36

     

    Someone (of a higher authority) gives a command and having no choice, you choose to obey. (But you don’t like it, do you?)

    If GOD, the ALL-POWERFUL Creator of life, accountant of your days and judge of your soul – if the LORD GOD gives you a command, can you choose anything but to obey?

    Of course… we often (and regrettably) do not obey our Lord.

    I remind us of all this to point to what Jesus said just prior to His oft-quoted “Greater love has no man than this…” application, which He did fulfill for us on the Cross.

    “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. – John 15:14

    Imagine Jesus ‘commanding’ you to love other Christians as He has loved you. Can you do it?  (Many of us are most difficult to love.)

    We expect the grace of this Savior we call ‘Lord’ to cover our lack of love for others, but we must not  imagine that Jesus has only suggested it.

    Our Lord has spoken it to us as His “command.”

    Once again, think of yourself as a ‘follower’ of Jesus (even to the cross, if you must… even at some personal sacrifice, if you must) – put yourself in the well-worn sandals of Jesus’ Disciples and hear our ‘Lord’ in the eyes of your heart:

    John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

    13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

    14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.

    15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

    17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

    Lord, you have commanded me, your saint and servant, heir to the life and the love of the house of the LORD, forever.

    Have you ever lamented: “Where are my ‘christian’ ‘friends? Have you ever wondered, “Where are my’ fellow ‘saints’ who would lay down their life for me?”

    It is to our shame that any member of our church should have to ask for the love of Jesus in us.

    For our ‘Lord’ and Savior has spoken His commandment to you and to me:

    “…love one another as I have loved you,”

    The Commitment of Christian Marriage

    This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

    Did we miss this? I love a good mystery. Don’t you? Especially at the moment you finally get it – the moment you figure out where the story has been headed all along.

    Paul writes a letter to the church (at Ephesus). It is a letter to you and a letter to me, IF we claim Christ as our Lord… IF we are consumed with the promised return of our Lord. But there’s a mystery here you might overlook if you see Ephesians only as a letter with rules and regulations. It is the mystery of relationship.

    Walk in Love

    Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.  2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

    Walk in love. We get that, right?

    Walk. Make progress in our faith. Don’t just stay as we were, but become as Christ would want us.

    We are beloved children of the Living God. WOW! We love that. But now, as children we are expected to grow up as a member of the family of God our father. Yet as the rebellious child will often do, we get hung-up on Dad’s rules. (See vs. 5-21)

    Then, it seems (like in all good mysteries) that the author is headed down a different road with just the obvious connection to that ‘sexual immorality’ thing: porneia. We know that marriage should solve all of that. But why is Paul giving marriage so much ink?

    Wives and Husbands

    22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

    25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

    27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

    28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

    29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body.

    Lets pause for a moment and look at this from a different perspective. Many a sermon has been preached using Ephesians 5:22 as a reason for husbands to have their wives “submit” to their will. I will point out here that MANY a husband is NOT submitted to Jesus Christ as his Lord. For the text says, “as to the Lord.” Therefore, BOTH the husband and the wife who claim Jesus Christ as their Lord MUST be submitted to Christ as Lord.

    Is your Christian marriage submitted to Christ as your Lord?

    Husbands, love your wives. (Don’t get mixed up on this now.) Love here is not sexual love. (That’s OK and expected, but Paul refers to something bigger here.)

    Love, that is: agapaō, is inclusive of the same love expected from all Christians for each other on a most intimate basis.

    Paul adds: as Christ loved the church. (Same word for loved: agapaō). This means that in a sense if you think of Jesus as the Husband and you as the Bride, it’s the love that Jesus has for you IF He were your Husband. It’s the same love that God has for all of us in the sense that ‘adam’ means not only man, but mankind.

    But Paul does not stop there with his example for husbands. He adds: and gave himself up for her.

    What does he mean by, gave himself up?

    Husbands, he means a sacrificial love for your wife. Do you do that? (For you were glad enough to have your wife sacrifice her humility to serve you. Do you sacrifice your being for her?)

    Paul emphasized the sacrifice of the husband even more (in a way that we cannot get around), for he adds to that a purpose: that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word.

    Sanctify her: a husbands duty. A religious term meaning to to separate her from profane things and dedicate a wife to God. My responsibility as her husband. (And I pray in the Lord that she will submit to it.)

    The prodigal wife has returned from the pig sty. She is filthy. She has had an unloving master who has not cared that she has wasted all of her blessing and inheritance from her father on foolish things. She begs to return home, even as a servant with not even the rights of one of the family of the father.

    How will you welcome this filthy prodigal wife?

    Sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word. 

    Picture the purification of the Bible, a waterfall showering the one sanctified to God until all the filth of the pig sty of the worldly places is gone.

    The water of purification is the word of the Lord.

    Will your wife listen? That is what the Lord wants to know. Will you and she both become sanctified in the Word?

    John 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

    It all goes back to the beginning, to Eden, to God’s intention of the intimacy of the relationships involved of adam.

    31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 

    Paul now refers to the mystery of marriage. The climax, however, is more than you ever expected. (Paul adds that the mystery is profound.) 

    32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

    JESUS + HIS CHURCH = a Marriage made in Heaven.

    As a member of Christ’s body, the church; Christians are Jesus’ Bride.

    Every prepared and purified soul of the church awaits the coming again of our Bridegroom: Christ Jesus, our Lord and Husband betrothed to each of us.

    It is a very great mystery, Jesus Christ + the Church; Husband + wife. We are by His sacrifice one with Him and will be with Him in His heavenly home for all time.

    Paul adds, as our example of that marriage:

    33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

     Why is the witness of Christian marriage so important?

    We are the respect of Christ in this world, until He returns for His faithful Bride.

    Christians must live as Christ and be witness to His love and righteousness.

    Would you (IF you were Jesus) want an unfaithful wife?

    The hypocrisy of failed christian marriages is no mystery to the world.

    WE, by the witness of our divorces are prodigal wives gone off to the pig sty on our own.

    It is because of the hardness of our hearts and not love for Christ Jesus, our Betrothed Bridegroom.

    Will we return to the vows of our faithfulness?

    OR will the Lord return before we purify our church once more?

    They are no longer two, but one.

    Is your marriage one with Christ Jesus our returning Bridegroom?

    For He poured out His sacrifice of love for His Bride on the Cross.

    May we in our Christian marriages once more take up our cross and follow the Bridegroom.

    Africa: Faith in a House of Cards

    Americans, Europeans, many South Americans, South Africans, Australians, upper class Indians and upper class Asians of countries like China and Japan are very blessed.

    Even though we may be poor compared to most of our own countrymen, most ‘relatively rich’ Christians (like us) do NOT see and hear the great need of many brothers and sisters in Christ, let alone the great needs of Christian missions to others in countries and states hostile to Christ Jesus.

    How often do you hear of Christian Missions in places like Cameroon and Central African Republic?

    Central African RepublicThe MAP of our world changes continually, nowhere more radically than Africa. The reasons do not change: greed, power and control by religion (especially Islam, but also others).

    Here is a better current perspective to ‘world history’ than a schooling from ancient textbooks of the 20th century. Visit any continent (courtesy BBC country profiles) like this one for Africa. Facts & History will reveal an ongoing battle of Islamist radicals and others to displace and defeat Christians.

    As you may know from Sudan and other troubled places in Africa, greed and radical religious beliefs know NO boundaries. Patient authoritarian Islamist leaders aggravate and stir the hatreds of hot spots from their comfortable places in Saudi Arabia, Iran and many other countries.

    Persecuted Christians on all continents and the Christian missions which bring the Gospel of Christ Jesus to the unsaved have been on my heart for many months now.  Many fine missionary organizations support these through our many small contributions though our local churches.

    Check with your own church and you can often find ways to contribute even more to these MANY needs.  Just one example of our church is Operation Christmas Child.

    I know you know John 3:16; do you know 1 John 3:16? (& 17 & 18)?

    For truth we do not hear and in deed we have no charity (agapē).

    The Middle East typically receives the most press. As a reminder, many of the troubled countries are part of N. Africa.

    On occasion we will hear of troubles of Somalia, Kenya, or other African peoples in struggles against the tyranny of evil, greed, military force,  rebels, anarchists, Islamists,  forces of  ‘nature’, famine, war… etc. etc… while mention of the daily struggles and needs of the poor remain rare.

    Here is the full story you never hear from just five months ago. Please pray for and support the missions of these faithful Christians.

    One might be shocked to learn that some areas of Africa have become mighty fortresses for Christ, but great need persists for these faithful Christian brothers and sisters, especially for many abandoned children who would have no hope were it not for the love of these faithful Christians.

    Ghana, a country once known as a place where Portuguese and British ruled and exported slaves into other parts of the world has now become a place where the freedom of Christianity is sent into other parts of Africa.

    Never-the-less, Americans, Europeans and others do not realize the extent of poverty in nations such as Ghana, where the average annual income is only $1,410, compared to $48,620 in the US or $36,010 USD in Hong Kong or $80,440 in Qutar, a place for Arabian princes and World Capitalists to shelter their considerable wealth.

    Refugees from war-torn African nations and abandoned aids babies of immoral powerful men depend on the support, love and charity of Christian community and even homes of many compassionate Christians in places like Ghana.

    They depend on the financial support of Christian missions and a few individual Christian churches and missions.

    Please consider support and prayer for one of these welcomed into the love of Christ Jesus.

    These are the faces of orphans living in a Christian home in Ghana and provided for by a poor worker in a nearby home for other orphans.

    These are the faces of Christian love.  These little ones are also the faces of Christian need for a Christian sister with barely enough to keep food on their table.

    I will close with a personal story of Christian love from this beloved sister in Christ from just last SUNDAY, 6 OCTOBER, 2013 (a day our church feasts every month after first Sunday communion.)

    Ghana-Tracywe met Tracy last Sunday when she was at church Alone!

    She didn’t want to go back home because she was denied from eating food for the last four days as punishment for the not carrying her auntie’s baby!

    she preferred sleeping at church than going back home, so we went with her and talked to her auntie about it!

    she is now living a happy and hopeful life! Thank You for your prayers!!

    Who else will intervene for Jesus when others turn away the little children?
