  • A Happy Hope in the LORD our God Psalm 146

A Happy Hope in the LORD our God Psalm 146

Are YOU a happy sort of human being?

Where do YOU find your hope in all that is happening?

The Psalmist points you (and me) to the LORD and away from mortals and empty promises for hope that can never satisfy.

    Psalm 146:

    הַלְלוּ־יָהּ הַלְלִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת־יְהוָה׃

As is the case with so many Psalms songs of worship (from the original Hebrew) Psalm 146 begins and ends with praise.

Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul!

    Psalm 146:1 RSV

The LORD will reign for ever, thy God, O Zion, to all generations.

    Praise the LORD!

    Psalm 146:13

    Who IS the LORD?

Before we get to the text of the Psalm and happiness promised, let’s clarify the focus of Who we worship in the LORD.

    יְהֹוָה

יְהֹוָה Yᵉhôvâh, yeh-ho-vaw’; from H1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jeho-vah, Jewish national name of God:—Jehovah, the Lord. Compare H3050, H3069.

Yehovah is used for the LORD from the very beginning of Scripture:

These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. In the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens..

then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

    Genesis [בְּרֵאשִׁית] 2:4,7 RSV

    LORD: Yehovah Eloheim

AND Yehovah is frequently used in conjunction with ‘אֱלֹהִים

    • ʼĕlôhîym, el-o-heem’; plural of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God

AND (in Psalm 146 and other poetic praise) Ya [יָהּ] – a contraction of LORD, God or Jehovah and meaning the same.

    Source: BlueLetterBible.org.

    Psalms uses:

    • Ya (for LORD) 43x
    • Yehovah (for LORD) 687x
    • אֱלֹהִים – ʼĕlôhîym (for God) 387x

    בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ׃

In the beginning God [ĕlōhîm] created the heavens and the earth.

    Genesis 1:1

Like other Psalms, even when not expressing human reactions other than happiness and hope, Psalm 146 is written and sung for the express purpose of worshiping the LORD God.

I will sing praises to my God while I have being.

Worship of the LORD as long as you live is a given for EVERY believer — and Psalm 146 opens with our response to the LORD our God:

While I live will I praise the LORD:

I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.

    Psalm 146:2 KJV

Then the Psalmist contrasts the futility of those who do NOT praise the LORD our God:

Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.

When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.

    Psalm 146:3-4 NIV

Can you think of some princes, presidents, premiers, prime ministers, popes, persistent politicians WE have trusted?

    AND is it not so?

.. his thoughts and plans perish.

    v. 4d- AMP

    How blessed..

    Blessed are…

Strong’s Definitions אֶשֶׁר ʼesher, – happiness; only in masculine plural construction as interjection, how happy!:—blessed, happy.

    Happy are you..

    Happy are you, O Israel!
Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD,
    The shield of your help
And the sword of your majesty!
Your enemies shall submit to you,
And you shall tread down their high places.”

Deuteronomy 33:29 NKJV – from Moses; blessings to the tribes who were captive in Egypt and before the Hebrews would follow the LORD conquering the promised land.

Now the Psalmist leads us in worship:

Happy is he who has the God [ēl] of Jacob for his help,
Whose hope is in the LORD [Yᵊhōvâ] his God [ĕlōhîm],

    Psalm 146:5 NKJV

    Why Our Happy Hope?

The Psalmist outlines good reasons for worshipers of the LORD God to be happy. And it all points to CREATION, both in the beginning and in our everyday experience.

    • He made heaven and earth,
    • (He made) The sea,
    • and (God made) all that is in them (the heavens, the earth and the seas);
    • [it is He} Who keeps truth forever,

    The LORD opens the eyes of the blind;
    The LORD raises those who are bowed down;
    The LORD loves the righteous.

    The LORD watches over the strangers;
    He relieves the fatherless and widow;

    Psalm 146:8-9b NKJV

    Consequence for those NOT blessed

WE don’t like to think about curse — only blessing (as if ALL receive blessing and are happy in the Lord our God).

The Psalmist, however, adds a brief contrast to happiness here we all see it in many others.. or at times even in our own non-response to the blessings of God.

.. but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

    Psalm 146:9c ESV

Do YOU choose to be HAPPY , that is: BLESSED in the LORD God?

A heading for PSALM 146 in the AUTHORIZED KING JAMES VERSION reads:

    The blessedness of trusting God

    Do YOU trust God?

.. but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.

Surely, you who trust God are not wicked.

Why then, would you not be happy?

The Psalmist closes singing with great joy and praise!

The LORD shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations.
    Praise ye the LORD.

    Psalm 146:10 AKJV

Hail Mary, humble wife of GOD

And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

Gospel of Luke 2:16 King James Version

    Mary an Introduction

Christians, Jews and unbelievers know parts of the iconic scene unfolding in Bethlehem through a virgin Jewish mother.

Today I honor Mary most appropriately by retelling her story of Christmas mostly from the King James Version of the Holy Bible.

Mary, Eve of the Virgin Birth

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem..

.. with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

Gospel of Luke 2:4-5 KJV excerpt

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

    Mary, wife of Joseph?

Not quite, according to custom and Jewish law.

Do YOU know any young woman who has been pregnant (even near full term) yet not married to the man she knew?

    μνηστεύω Strong’s G3423 – mnēsteuō – from a derivative of G3415; to give a souvenir (engagement present), i.e. betroth:—espouse.

Recall that GREEK is the common language not only of Luke the Physician but also of all of the Roman Empire ruled by Caesar Augustus.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused G3423 to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

    Gospel of Matthew 1:18 KJV

    SCANDELOUS !

(as least in the A.D. First Century)

    Mary, ENGAGED to Joseph

AND they both know that the Virgin Mary had NEVER come together with Joseph her fiancé!

    Joseph, an honorable man

(like his namesake and ancestor, Joseph, son of Jacob, who the LORD used to rule Egypt under Pharaoh.)

    Gospel of Matthew 1:19- KJV

Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying,

    Joseph, thou son of David,
fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife:
for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

    Matthew 1:20b KJV

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS:

for he shall save his people from their sins.

    Gospel of Matthew 1:21 KJV

An angel of the Lord speaks to you!

    What to do?

The adoptive father of JESUS believes God (of course). And Joseph is a righteous and honorable man.

Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

    Gospel of Matthew 1:24-25 KJV

    Signs and Witnesses

Prophesy of Isaiah and others centuries Before Christ.

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

    Isaiah 7:14 KJV

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Gospel of Luke 2:8-14 King James Version

    Witnesses and worship

    Signs before Jesus’ birth

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course, According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

Gospel of Luke 1:5-11 King James Version

An Angel of the Lord standing beside the Priest of God right inside the Holy of Holies! A pretty big deal.

Briefly, what happens next is a foretelling prophetic birth of JOHN the BAPTIST, preparing the way for the Lord Jesus, the consolation of Israel and Messiah sent of God the Father.

Elisabeth, John and the Holy Spirit

    • Zacharias the Priest of God continued to serve his term in the Temple unable to speak.
      • Daily worshipers in Jerusalem must have know that something was up.
    • He returns home.
    • Elisabeth conceived.
    • An angel of the Lord then appears in Nazareth prior to their trip to register for the census of Caesar and also tells Mary:

And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible.

    Gospel of Luke 1:36-37 KJV

    • And Mary went into the hill country of *Juda
    • And entered into the house of Zacharias
    • and (knowing the the angel had revealed) saluted Elisabeth.

And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary,

    the babe leaped in her womb;

and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

Jesus Christ born in a manger

Church fathers, theologians who study such things, took a few centuries to articulate the trinitarian Christology from the Apostles recorded in Scripture from the A.D. first century.

The clarity of their CREEDS and CONFESSIONS of FAITH define our hope of eternal life in the Lord Jesus Christ.

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.
Who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary,
    and was made man

    Nicene Creed excerpt
    AD 325 & AD381

    εὐλογέωeulogeō

.. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

    Luke 1:42b KJV

    κύριος – kyrios

As were Joseph and others to whom the Lord sent His angels:

The soul of Mary is humble, as is JESUS from her womb to the Cross.

Doxology – Blessed are YOU, LORD God!

    blessed

Beatitude, we think; ‘Blessed are you when..’

and Jesus personally embraces the crowds in His sermon on the mount. Doxology, however, is when we bless God.

Praise God from whom all blessing flow.

In Christ Jesus doxology becomes the sweet water of God’s love flowing towards us from our Father in heaven and the tree of eternal life.

Throughout the Bible faithful men praise the LORD, ‘Blessed are you, O Lord’ and the LORD also blessed them of His chosen ones.

    Scriptures

I will not quote all Books from both the Old and New Testaments. So here I will mention just a few favorite quotes. Perhaps my favorite is the warm personal greeting of Paul and Timothy to Corinth and their praise of God.

    2 Samuel 6:18

    Psalm 34:8

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

    2 Corinthians 1

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Timothy, To the church of God which is at Corinth with all the saints who are throughout Achaia:

2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
