    Preaching Consequence!

WE do NOT like to be told the consequence of our SIN against the Lord. Preaching consequence of turning against God often begets more sin. Jesus was crucified on a Cross and Prophets of Israel suffered for preaching what God Commanded in the Law.

Blessing IF you obey OR Curse IF your heart turns away

We began in the New Testament Gospel, looked back to Deuteronomy and TODAY will return to the consequence of turning against the Lord.

“… whoever does not obey [apeitheō – {from G545; to disbelieve (wilfully and perversely)}]

the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

John 3:36b {after the ‘God so loved the world’ invitation to grace in 3:16)

“But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods, then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed.

    – Deuteronomy 30:17-18a NLT – the Word of the LORD through Moses

Then the Spirit of God covered Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest like clothing; and he stood above the people and said to them, “This is what God has said, ‘Why do you break the commandments of the LORD and do not prosper?

Because you have abandoned the LORD,

    He has also abandoned you.’”

    2 Chronicles 24:20

So they conspired against him, and at the command of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the house of the LORD.

    Preaching consequence from history

IF you are anything like me you likely dozed off a time or two during history class. And when we read the historical record from Moses to Jesus we miss some preaching of consequence to which we ought to have paid attention.

So in today’s conclusion of this 3-part Summer Scriptural Rerun you may find a warning or two of consequence you never heard preached or rarely read in the Bible.

But IF: the Consequence of broken promise – Will the LORD not surely do -2

So what! Did you HEAR the consequences?

What is the consequence of broken promise? WE seldom consider CLEAR consequences. Whether Old Testament Commandment, warning of a Prophet or New Testament Command of the Lord Christ Jesus, SO OFTEN WE do not have ‘ears to hear’ the promised consequence of disobedience to God.

DO YOU REMEMBER when someone PROMISED to do something for you?

    And THEY broke their promise?

What IF WE break our promise to God?

Followers of the LORD make many Covenants with God. New and Old Testaments both provide us with Scriptural assurance of blessings. BUT IF we abandon our PROMISE to GOD, clear consequences await us. (Curse, rather than Blessing.)

Christians should not expect grace without genuine repentance for our sin against God.

Old Testament Promises: Blessing OR the Consequence of Curse

Earlier in our Summer Scriptural Reruns I also pointed us back to this important look at the Law from Deuteronomy in D.C. al Coda – Deuteronomy – But IF...

‘Will the LORD not surely do what He has said?’ focused on Jesus’ Command from the Gospel of John in PART 1. TODAY we return to OLD TESTAMENT promises. These Scriptures build a firm foundation and confidence in what GOD has really said.

But IF you break it.. What is the consequence of broken promise?

Again, I point us to a Scripture which connects our theme: hearing the consequence of a broken promise.

“This is what God has said, ‘Why do you break the commandments of the LORD and do not prosper?

Because you have abandoned the LORD,

    He has also abandoned you.’”

    2 Chronicles 24:20b NASB20

    Scriptures

    Deuteronomy 30

    1 Samuel 1,2,12 excerpts

    1 Kings 9

Scripture is what He has said

If you have been following this summer’s series of Doctrinal posts on talkofJESUS.COM you have just read about Sola Scripture, that is: Only Scripture. And IF you believe ‘what is written’ then you know that both blessings and curses are conditional.

Scripture also speaks for the LORD! God commands. We must listen and obey.

Jesus COMMANDS His followers and they encourage us in the Gospel what WE must do. THEREFORE Christians must believe that JESUS will do what HE has said.

Although this scripture was not part of many which could have been a part of the theme of this 3-part series, it is its theme:

Then the Spirit of God covered Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest like clothing; and he stood above the people and said to them,

“This is what God has said,

‘Why do you break the commandments of the LORD and do not prosper? Because you have abandoned the LORD, He has also abandoned you.’”

    2 Chronicles 24:20 NASB20
    • God is faithful. So why would you abandon your Scripture faith?
chalkboard - written Sola Scriptura! Only Scripture

The Gospel proclaims that JESUS IS LORD!

We must not question the Lord Jesus’ intentions for us.

His Command is clear: in the Good News of a New Testament our Lord Jesus calls the church to ‘a NEW Commandment.’

A Commandment of Scripture worth repeating

Earlier this year I linked this post to my series on the Gospel of John, but in case you missed it this post from seven years ago should command your attention. For after all, Jesus IS GOD and Scripture is God’s word.
