    Some Prophets from Jerusalem

Now in those days, some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

    ACTS 11:27 Legacy Standard Bible

A believer in Christ, follower of a false prophet, worshiper of an ancient god or iconic contemporary might easily miss the significance of these four verses from ACTS of the Apostles.

As you may recall from our previous look at ACTS 11:26, we have been in Antioch for a year now.

    https://talkofjesus.com/an-antioch-blueprint-of-church-evangelism/
Antioch was 3rd largest city in the Roman Empire, a commercial center of trade with all the world

Christians‘ – a label by outsiders

The followers of Jesus were so different from the culture around them.. Clearly the followers of the
Way’ .. people of all cultural backgrounds, weren’t Jews. Gentile observers called them, “little Christs.”

    Tony Merida – Christ-centered Exposition – Exalting Jesus in Acts [p. 162]

As we observed last time these events took place around A.D. 40 just a few years after the resurrection of Jesus. But these are also tumultuous times for the Roman Empire ruling over a largely Greek-speaking world once ruled by Alexander the Great just three centuries earlier.

Conquering Roman leaders would march their captives into Rome and be worshiped as gods. These mere men likened themselves to the many idols of Rome and gods of ancient Greece and eastern lands where Jews were also led as captives centuries before.

“Only gods may choose new gods.

Claudius, as he refused the request of Alexandrian Greeks to dedicate a temple to his divinity
Claudius the by Robert Graves, author of I, Claudius

Tiberius Claudius Nero Caesar Drusus (1 August 10 BC–13 October 54), originally known as Tiberius Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus, was the fourth Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, ruling from 24 January 41 to his death in 54.source

    Claudius

On 24 January 41, Caligula was assassinated in a broad-based conspiracy involving Cassius Chaerea – a military tribune in the Praetorian Guard – and several senators..

The Senate quickly met and began debating a change of government, but this eventually devolved into an argument over which of them would be the new princeps. When they heard of the Praetorians’ claim, they demanded that Claudius be delivered to them for approval, but he refused, sensing the danger that would come with complying.

Source: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some historians, particularly Josephus, claim that Claudius was directed in his actions by the Judean King Herod Agrippa..

[Who we will meet later in Acts of the Apostles during upcoming missions of the Apostle Paul.]

Claudius was the first emperor proclaimed on the initiative of the Praetorian Guard instead of the Senate [of Rome]

    source [more below]

Claudius was concerned with the spread of eastern mysteries within the city and searched for more Roman replacements.. He expelled foreign astrologers, and at the same time rehabilitated the old Roman soothsayers (known as haruspices) as a replacement..

Claudius forbade proselytizing in any religion, even in those regions where he allowed natives to worship freely. [Freedom from {other} religion – sound familiar?}]

It is also reported that at one time he expelled the Jews from Rome. [SEE ACTS 18]

In the world you will have tribulation..

Claudius restored the status of the peaceful Imperial Roman provinces of Macedonia and Achaea as senatorial provinces.

Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. – Acts 11:1

“And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ – Acts 11:16

    Acts 11 continued

27 Now in those days, some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them named Agabus stood up and indicated by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine all over the world. And this took place in the reign of Claudius.

The bold prophesy of future desolation

Who has ever heard of this prophet?

And what brashness to predict some future disaster coming to all the inhabited world!

A POWERFUL prince may predict what disaster he will bring upon the lands he will invade or a lord of legions may cause the devastation of his own citizens, but who can say what the Lord God will do to the whole world?

And who would believe it anyway?

(What can mere mortal men do even knowing of such disasters yet to come?)

    Ἄγαβος? (Never heard of him.)

    Agabus is a Christian prophet.

Luke’s account of this prediction reveals the power behind Agabus’ prediction of famine is none other than the Holy Spirit of God, Who has already intervened with some frequency in Acts of the Apostles.

From their own history the Jews know that God will certainly do what he reveals through his prophets.

دانيال (Daniel) 5 :: Open New Arabic Version (NAV)

When Belshazzar tasted the wine, he said to bring the gold and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem.. They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.

Suddenly the fingers of a man’s hand came out and began writing opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace, and the king saw the back of the hand that did the writing.

.. Then Daniel was brought in before the king..

“This is the interpretation of the message: ‘MENĒ’—God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it.

    Daniel 5:2a,4-5,13a,26 LSB

Joseph – a similar prophecy from Scripture

Even though you may not know of Agabus you likely know the preparation of Egypt due to the prophesy of Joseph. The Church, too, will take Agabus at his word through the Spirit and prepare itself from the famine yet to come.

التكوين (Genesis) 41 :: Open New Arabic Version (NAV)

Now it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh had a dream.. And the ugly and [lean of flesh] thin cows ate up the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh awoke.

..seven ears of grain came up on a single stalk, plump and good. And behold, seven ears, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them.

And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, but no one can interpret it; yet I have heard it said about you, that you hear a dream and that you can interpret it.”

    Genesis 41:1a,4,5b-6,15

Joseph, Daniel, Agabus & the true Prophets of God

What is it that ALL these true Prophets of the Lord God have in common?

Daniel had reminded Belshazzar son of Nebuchadnezzar how the LORD had given his father power to rule.

“[lit. You king] O king, the Most High God granted the kingdom, grandeur, glory, and majesty to Nebuchadnezzar your father.

    Daniel 5:18 LSB

Joseph, Son of Israel (Jacob) gives Pharaoh a similar answer:

Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me; God will answer concerning the welfare of Pharaoh.”

    Genesis 41:16 LSB

The prophesies of the true prophet of God are neither self-serving nor words of their own AND the prophesy of the LORD will always take place as the Lord has revealed to his prophet.

Then Pharaoh named Joseph Zaphenath-paneah [the god speaks and he lives; treasury of the glorious rest; savior of the age]

    Genesis 41:45a; link above to Strong’s H6847

The hundreds of disciples of the risen Christ who had received the Holy Spirit all knew that the prophesy of Agabus would be fulfilled, just as prophesies of saviors of their past had come true.

    THEREFORE

Like Joseph, the disciples of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (whom some present had witnessed after the Lord’s resurrection) obediently prepared for their certain future.

And as any of the disciples had means, each of them determined to send a contribution for the service of the brothers living in Judea.

    Acts 11:29 LSB

Antioch - Crossroads of Christianity and map of 1sr c. AD Roman Empire
.. and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. Acts of the Apostles 11:25b NASB

These men and women joined in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit believed this prophesy of Agabus that a famine was about to come upon the whole Roman world. They must support the Apostles of Jesus and fellow followers of The Way in Jerusalem. For these men would be blamed more than most and persecuted as Christians have already suffered even more so in these days to come.

And as for their contribution for fellow saints in Judea:

And this they did, sending it in charge of Barnabas and Saul to the elders.

These are politically troubling times not only in Jerusalem but in Rome and throughout the Roman Empire.

King Herod (as we have just learned) is all caught up in the politics and religion issues with Claudius, Emperor and lord Caesar of the whole world; which, of course, includes Jerusalem.

Inerrant TRUTH: Our reasoned Biblical Faith

WHY would you study the HOLY BIBLE?

    For inerrant truth!

Do we believe by faith? YES, but not a fantastical faith or unrealistic religious calling to that which cannot be known.

In most circumstances and communications, truth matters to me and also to you. Certainly God speaks only truth and the Bible is where ‘it is written’ by God, through men and confirmed by the Holy Spirit of God.

Truth matters to God as it ought to mankind of His creation.

A Perfect Lord God does not make mistakes, nor does He lie to a man (as men frequently deceive one another).

    In review:

We have just studied several of His doctrines as students seeking knowlege and truth.

[Oops! I frequently make an error in knowledge. Did YOU catch it?]

Do we also make errors in TRUTH?

ONLY SCRIPTURE speaks to man with the Highest Authority of TRUTH.

    THE HOLY BIBLE SPEAKS

Why would you study the BIBLE?

open Bible and hands with pen
Share your question about scripture with other Christians at talkofJESUS.com

GOD speaks to man through the HOLY Spirit in what is written in Holy Scripture. Since man now seeks knowledge of good and evil, our first question of reasoned faith becomes where to look. Our logical pursuit of good also leads man to weigh God-given and God-evident truth.

Besides our own observations of evidence and fact, where will one learn truth without error?

Where do we find this unshakable faith in what GOD has said?

In the Holy Bible, which contains Inerrant truth of what God has said.

Sanctify them through thy truththy word is truth.

John 17:17 KJVprayer of Christ Jesus

The Highest Authority of the Lord God will confirm unequivocal inerrant truth ONLY in the HOLY BIBLE, if we will READ and Study the very Word of God.

    KNOWING GOD

In his book, ‘Knowing God,’ J.I. Packer, after beginning, “..the Bible is his word,” in five theological points writes”

Godliness means responding to God’s revelation in trust and obedience, faith and worship, prayer and praise, submission and service. Life must be seen and lived in the light of God’s word. This, and nothing else, is true religion.

Knowing God p.20 – five basic truths #5

    What is truth?

Most Christians will recognize the question of Pontius Pilate to Christ Jesus to which the Prefect of Judea from Rome expected no answer.

Like Pilate, we sometimes ask about truth rhetorically, expecting no answer or having no measure of relative truth.

Where can we find reliable Truth (with a capital ‘T’)?

    The BIBLE is your source.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Gospel of John 1:14 NASB20 – Do you seek the Truth in the flesh?

    Objective, Subjective & relative truth

Packer makes the important point that God’s truth does not change. [p.78]

Again, quoting Packer in KNOWING GOD:

Truth in the Bible is a quality of persons primarily, of propositions only secondarily. It means stability, reliability, firmness, trustworthiness, the quality of a person who is entirely self-consistent, sincere, realistic, undeceived.

    KNOWING GOD, p.113

I like this definition of Truth. Don’t you?

Look back that this list of qualities of such a person. Then note what Packer says next:

God is such a person: truth, in this sense, is his nature, and he has not got it in him to be anything else.

    J. I. Packer

To fully understand objective Truth (with a capital ‘T’) you must meet the Person of a personal God.

When God tells Moses to tell the people his Name, “I AM that I AM,” the LORD states objective truth.

Subjective truth on the other hand depends on the separate minds of mankind.

Therefore philosophers (theists and atheists alike) refer to subjective truth as the nature of a thing, essential attributes that which makes it what it is, or its inherent essential qualities.

All that to say, I think, therefore I am this or I am that. And that makes me what I am.

Perhaps God is required (the conclusion of theists) or perhaps not (even definitely not, say the atheists who deny the evidence, lack faith and cannot prove either theory).

In any case, the case of philosophers is subjective truth, conjecture, as it were.

    Theories of Relativity

But it gets worse. From the varying opinions of men and acceptance of all possibilities (whether possible or not, whether true or not), we get:

Relative truth (Capital ‘R’ + very small ‘t’).

a parable of the madman who is searching for God

Of course you think ‘God is dead,’ because you buried your BIBLE.

    • The theory.. truth.. morality, have no universal validitysource
    • philosophical doctrine (teaching) of the relativity of knowledge
    • theory, especially in ethics.. conceptions of truth and moral values are not absolute..

That is to say, the theory of relativism, by accepting ALL truths (small ‘t’), teaches a philosophy of tolerance, void of moral values and insistent that only their truth is absolute.

All gods and all religions are valid except any which proclaim absolute Truth {capital ‘T’) and One God with true authority of man. Relativists, as universalists, do NOT believe in the One True God of the Bible. In practice, though some may claim ‘god,’ their worship (if any) is idolatry. These false philosophers and teachers are, in fact, atheists.

God is NOT dead; only Truth, murdered by atheists.

psalm 14:1 fool says there is no god

Truth (capital ‘T’) may not exist

    (they claim).

    • Refuting the absolute Truth of God denies facts in evidence.
    • Truth (capital ‘T’ absolute truth) is unprovable in the separate and sinfully separated minds of mankind.
      • (although relativists deny sin, morality & truth
        • {see their denial by definition above})

What do you believe about Biblical Truth?

God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of mankind

To see if there is anyone who understands,

    Who seeks after God.

Psalm 53:2 [Foolishness and Wickedness of People.
    (also Psalm 14:1–7 )] {v.1 is about the fool}

A man (or woman) can understand truth.

And we can understand [שָׂכַל] [to be prudent, be circumspect or wisely understand, prosper] in truth by seeking the Lord God by faith in Holy Scripture.

Once again, Packer, in KNOWING GOD, states:

True Christians are those who acknowledge and live under the word of God.

J.I. Packer in Knowing God, p116

Quoting Daniel, Packer adds: They submit without reserve to the word of God written in “the Book of Truth”..

“However, I will tell you what is recorded in the writing of truth.

    Daniel 10:21a NASB20 [additional translations]

IF you seek truth in the Bible, you would do well to seek after God in the Scriptures included in this verse.

But IF you do NOT seek Biblical Truth or the TRUTH written by God in Scripture, you will need to note the enemy of Truth mentioned in the second part of Daniel’s writing in 10:21b (also linked above).

Christians do believe proven facts; however science frequently claims THEORY as FACT.

Science is NOT the highest authority of Truth. God IS.

    Roger@talkofJESUS.com

Therefore we do NOT believe certain THEORIES of scientists and philosophers which claim TRUTH, but are NOT FACT. These include:

First – false ‘facts’ we do NOT believe
    • Evolution is theory built on the premise and philosophy that the created is god.
      • The Bible refers to such beliefs as idolatry, of which the most prevalent in man is idolatry of self.
    • Naturalism is theory, not scientific fact.
      • Carbon dating conjectures calendars with complex limited variables, but beta testing of the late 20th century and calibration curves for calendar examples fail to prove origin of most things (let alone the world).
    • Environmentalism is a movement and ideology..
    • Physical cosmology, by definition is dependent on ‘the scientific theory
      • (without reference to what happened BEFORE the big bang!
      • or reasoning: Who (or what) caused it?)
    • This list of FALSE so called ‘facts’ is NOT exhaustive.

Truth is illusive in the unproven theories of science which man mirrors as “fact.”

    Seek TRUTH in Scripture

    • Start with Scripture studied and taught with precision and clarity
    • AND grow in your faith by its inerrant TRUTH.

“If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Gospel of John 8:31b-32 NASB20 – The words of Jesus to those Jews [who knew scripture well &] who had believed Him

    If you continue..

I have shared opposing views of inherent truth today. In fact, IF I have not provoked some reasoned thought about the Truth of the Bible I have missed the mark.

    • Do YOU really believe THAT about the Bible?
    • Does Scripture convey inerrant truth?

Please COMMENT & SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS.

NEXT: We will ask you some pointed doctrinal questions about the inerrancy of Scripture from a panel of distinguished theologians of the late 20th century. Shiloh IS Come

… until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

    Genesis 49:10 WLC; KJV

Centuries have passed since Jerusalem fell, was rebuilt and recaptured. Not only have we no peace, but live as a captive people in our own land. And no Prophet has spoken since the days of old. Shiloh, come Shiloh; LORD send peace to the people of your covenant.

The LORD has answered our prayer

O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

    Jeremiah 17:13 KJV – 6th c.B.C.

    Isaiah tells us:

Again the Lord spoke to me further, saying, “Inasmuch as these people have rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah…”

and that the Lord will cleanse the land by the ‘strong and abundant waters’ of Judah’s powerful enemy.

If only you had paid attention to my commands.

Then your peace would have been like a river,

and your righteousness like the waves of the sea. – Isaiah 48:18 CSB

Rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem by Nehemiah

The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of Kol-Hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofing it over and putting its doors and bolts and bars in place. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of Siloam, by the King’s Garden, as far as the steps going down from the City of David.

    Nehemiah 3:15 NIV – 4th c.B.C.

“Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the Lord’s sake cause Your face to shine on Your sanctuary, which is desolate. – Daniel 9:17

    In the Beginning

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. – John 1:1-2 NKJV

The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

    Genesis 1:2 NKJV

6 Then God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”

9 Then God said, “Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so.

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…” God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

    Genesis 1:26a-27 NASB

Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.

    Genesis 2:10 NKJV

    WE Have Been Here Before

In our lead up to Christmas I have pointed to the Trinity and eternity of the Lord God. One way to think of an eternal Jesus is as the Son of Man in a Manger,

    A Child is Born

    For thus saith the LORD,

Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream…

    Isaiah 66:12a NKJV

And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid… “And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” – The Good News of Luke 2:9,12 NKJV

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, toward men of goodwill!

    Luke 2:13-14 NKJV *textral translation

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” – The Good News of Matthew 1:21 CSB

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

    John 1:14 CSB

    Living Water

    Give me a drink.

request of Jesus to a woman at Jacob’s well – John 4:7

Jesus asks you one thing, so do you do it?

(This is the same Jesus born in a manger just thirty years earlier and the same Jesus who was ‘with God in the beginning.’)

OR do you question the Lord?

9 “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?”

Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water.”

The Gospel of John 4:10 CSB

You encounter a sinless Son of Man – Jesus – in a manger, on a Cross or along the road of life. Will you ask Him for living water?

Jesus walked on water and He calmed the waters of the stormy sea.

The Lord created, gave life to dust and walked Personally alongside the faithful. He IS the source of the spring of Eden, the river of life and the pool of peace in Jerusalem.

Shiloh or Siloam flows from Him and to Him. He IS the way of salvation to the living water.

    The Pool of Siloam

    John 9

Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth…

7 And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent).

The Lord touched you and commands, “Go” (do this or that). Will you obey? OR Do you question Jesus?

The religious elite questioned Him, but the blind man obeyed.

“Do you believe in the Son of God?”

36 He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?”

37 And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you.”

38 Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he worshiped Him.

    And Jesus said,

“For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.”

    John 9:39 NKJV

Sent to the World – Shiloh in a Manger

“Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord. – The Good News of the Gentile Physician Luke 2:11

Thirty some years later He returns to Jerusalem – the Lamb of God in the Person of Jesus.

    Luke 19:

Now he came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:

Blessed is the King who comes

in the name of the Lord.

    Peace in heaven

and glory in the highest heaven!

“Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory? ”

    Luke 24:26

    Of course it was.

We worship the Christ of the manger of Christmas because of the Lamb of God sent to the Cross for our sins.

“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.

    John 14:27 CSB
May the Lord bless your worship of Jesus,
our gift of Shiloh this CHRISTmas.
