Bill Harned – 100 years ago in Smalltown, America

Bill Harned, my dad as I remember him

Bill Harned had been the dad in the 1960’s with his Kodak 8mm movies of everyone else in our family then later endless slide shows and even a poster-board chart of our family tree.

I remember this photo of him in his new uniform after his promotion from Assistant Chief of the Cortland VFD to Fire Chief. Dad is standing near the front door of our house on East Main Street which he and my uncle Bob built back in 1955.

Bill Harned, Fire Chief, Cortland VFD 1960's
fireman outside world trade centers on 9-11

He had a regular job just like all the other men answering the call of the fire siren sounding. Most of the men and women of our community volunteered time to serve our little village and surrounding communities in many ways, as was expected in the early 20th century A.D.

Later he would serve on our local school board. Earlier my grandpa had been a village councilman, mayor and traffic court judge.

    Marie and Bill Harned

Bill Harned of Cortland married Marie Hall of Levittsburg OH on November 20, 1946
Marie and Bill Harned circa 1946

Mom, like so many other women born during the roaring 20’s, had been raised with just enough to get by during the Great Depression of the 30’s, then joined the factory workforce of the 40’s while Dad was in the Navy (building dirigibles in Akron, mostly) for WWII.

And in order to make ends meet like so many others, my mom and dad both worked as they raised us in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Many men had returned home to not enough peacetime jobs and a stagnant economy. Dad’s and moms both worked and even worked second jobs as their new babies (Boomers) needed fed.

(My parents managed the Cortland Roller Rink for a time where we grew up on roller skates with my mom sometimes playing the hit parade and 40's songs on the Hammond organ some evenings and on weekends.)

    Roger’s ‘boomer‘ biography

“‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you; that your days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with you, in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

Deuteronomy 5:16 Revised Standard Version (which I learned at confirmation as a member of the same Methodist Church where my father and grandfather had been active.)

Baby boomers (a demographic into which I was born just a little later than most) grew up in a smalltown era when everybody in town still knew everyone else.

Boom kids like me (we didn’t call ourselves that) frequently worked for grandparents or other relatives in town.

Of course along with these redefined roles of dads and moms came some less-than-ideal family situations (still hardly-mentioned) like divorce, separation and moving to separate towns and once never-imagined consequences of both parents fully losing authority and influence over a mass-media fed generation of flower-children rebelling against ducking their heads under our school desks while political leaders on T.V. threatened to blow up the world with nuclear weapons.

The Baby BOOM was so labeled due to the 'greatest generation' finally getting to have babies after war. Most still married. No pill to prevent a child from being born (of course), the natural result of a man and woman in love.

(Besides, why would any young man or young woman not want that?)

I suppose that in the U.S. in the year of our Lord 1950 when I was born, WE simply overlooked God’s grace in sparing OUR COUNTRY from the savagery of war, unscathed in industry and infrastructure, as WE now ruled the world with an imagined blueprint from a story-book painting of our past.

God, County, ambition and an imagined melting pot of the best cultural characteristics of every failed and defeated nation of WWII quickly developed US into an uncommon country leading a new world into an evolution of Common Era change.

Yet WE rapidly turned against everything our forefathers had once passed on:

    from generation to generation, grandfather to father, mother to daughter;

a duty to our family, to community, to the alien and for our citizen responsibilities of this land —

ALL in a SELF-preserving presence of a Common Era brought into being NOT by evolution,

but by revolution against GOD —

a fall and failing of all authority shaken by anarchy

re-defining artificial and human-made truths into that which WE know to be evil.

    Times of Change

Let’s put the lives of my parents, Marie and Bill Harned, into a context of the times when they were born beginning with my older grandfather, Herbert Hall (who had worked for the Erie Railroad) born in the last year of the 19th century, 1900 A.D.

You can think back just 23 years to the end of the 20th century to 2000 in this Common Era, can't you?

A child born this year will not remember 9/11/2001, but their parents and grandparents witnessed it.

    Remember 9/11 2,996 deaths

The 20th century began without planes, televisions, and of course, computers. These inventions radically transformed the lives of people around the globe, with many changes originating in the United States.

My great-grandfather Heberling [Gen’s father] had taught school in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, near Conneaut Lake. They were German-Americans and I recall this aged teacher in his late years as he sat in his rocker with a Bible in his lap, frequently falling asleep, occasionally walking about and rarely speaking to most of the family gathered in their home.

My purpose today is to honor the 100th anniversary of the birth of my father, William E. [Bill] Harned.

It is NOT so much that WE ought to either dwell in or dismiss the lessons of these last days witnessed by the generation of my father.

Although WE look back at history of our family and nation through tainted and well-worn rose-colored glasses, let US remember our long line back to the faith of our fathers and religion of a Christian heritage once prerequisite in the everyday lives of our PEOPLE and the LAW of our governing.

I observe now during my own waning years why some fathers of ours just shook their heads at the Common Era of these last day; while distant memories of our forefathers sitting silently in their rockers read their Bibles while waiting for a new heaven and a new earth to include all souls of those judged faithful to the One who IS True, JESUS Christ our Lord.

Hot Topics from Galatians #2 – Apostasy

Apostasy appears throughout the Holy Bible when God’s people become unholy.

    Roger@TalkofJesus.com

    HOT topic #2 – apostasy

Although Paul does not specifically name apostasy for the Galatians he will when writing to the Thessalonians.

[Circumcision may be a HOT Topic of the flesh of 2023 CE,
but this physical SIGN from a broken covenant was just one sign of apostasy,

SINCE MANY OPPOSE and deny Almighty God
and the Lamb of the NEW COVENANT Christ Jesus!

Galatians HOT topic #1: Perversion of the Gospel

In our first look at Paul’s letter to the Galatians (possibly sent from ACHAIA) we quickly discovered that the Apostle’s #1 HOT topic and concern for these new churches is perversion of the gospel of Christ.

Circumcision of men is cutting the flesh as a covenant with the LORD (which was broken). The term 'male circumcision' implies that female circumcision also exists. (It is more properly called mutilation.

WE easily get pulled off-topic. CIRCUMCISION is NOT the issue.

Even for the Jews circumcision is NOT the issue, but an excuse to JUDEIZE Greek and Roman converts by forcing a sign of a broken covenant on the flesh of men.

So apostasy is an unnamed HOT topic in his letter to the Galatian churches. Apostasy is a HOT topic result of false teaching by others which the Apostle to the Gentiles addresses.

    What is it?

To oversimplify, apostasy is akin to adultery against God.

And as we see the cultural custom of wedding bands, so too the Jews viewed circumcision of a man as a visual sign of their covenant with God.

    Apostasy defined:

    מְשׁוּבָה

The KJV translates Strong’s H4878 in the following manner: backsliding (11x), turning away (1x).

Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

    Jeremiah 2:19 KJV 2:19

When the Jews broke their covenant with the LORD,

    a NEW Covenant was needed

    – NOT a cultural covenant ONLY for the Jews, but a lasting covenant

a NEW testament of God’s love for men and women made in His Image — mortals from every culture of the world HE created.

we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law

Epistle from Paul to the Galatians 2:15 excerpt ESV

20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.

And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

    Galatians 3:

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?

It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified.

Paul’s epistle to the churches in Galatia 3:1 ESV

Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?

    • all who rely on works of the law are under a curse 10a
    • “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” – 10b

IT’S A BIG DEAL TO THE JEWS who knew AND tried to practice ALL THE LAWS OF SCRIPTURE.

    19 Why then the law?

It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made.

The ONLY sinless offspring (son of man) IS Christ: descendent AND predecessor of Abraham (to whom the covenant was given with its sign) AND of Moses (to whom was given the LAW of perfection by which ALL are transgressors (sinners) come under its curse.

24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.

25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.

27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

Certainly this was Paul's GOSPEL PREACHED to the GALATIANS at first.

    Galatians 4:

8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods.

9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?

15 What then has become of your blessedness? .. 16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth?

17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them.

    Galatians 5:

4 You are severed [cut away] from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.

5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.

6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

    • Who hindered you from obeying the truth?
    • This persuasion is not from him who calls you.
    • 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump.
    • do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh,
    • but through love serve one another.

The GOSPEL of Christ’s grace IS good news not only to the redeemed but by its evidence to others.

17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit,

and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh,

for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

Perversion of the FLESH? vs. Fruit of the SPIRIT?

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident:

sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies,

    and things like these.

I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

THE PERVERSITY OF HYPOCRISY BECOMES OBVIOUS IN ITS WITNESS THROUGH THOSE WHO CLAIM CHRIST?

    But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;

Paul’s epistle [instructive letter to the churches] to the Galatians 5:22-23a ESV

against such things there is no law.

24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

    Let’s just leave it there.

    a side note on Circumcision

Technically the HOT topic of Apostasy is circumcision which Paul mentions seven [7] times in his epistle to the men of the churches of Galatia and frequently in his other epistles to the churches.

    WHY?

    • Jewish men apostate from the LORD could make false claim to this covenant long-ago broken between the Hebrews and God
      • (much like a christian wearing the Cross of Christ while living in the flesh as Paul calls out to the Galatians).
    • Such claims certainly lead to further apostasy from God by the witness of such hypocrisy justifying further sin forbidden by the LAW and perversion of the flesh!

Does Paul’s HOT Topic #2 for the saints of the churches in Galatia CONVICT YOU?

WHAT FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT do you lack?

    OR

Is your witness as a christian saint somewhat steeped in the unholiness of the fruit of the flesh?

    – a council of the Apostles in Jerusalem

map of route between Jerusalem and Antioch where apostles sent missionaries into all the world of the gentiles
between the Church at Antioch & the Council at Jerusalem

Arrival of Paul and Barnabas from the Church at Antioch Syria

When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they declared all that God had done with them.

    Historical context:

In A.D. 49, nearly two decades after the crucifixion and resurrection of the Lord Christ Jesus, the Church has grown greatly by the power of the Holy Spirit.

    • Claudius had assassinated Caligula in Rome and is now Caesar of the Empire.
    • Herod Antipas, who had ruled Galilee and Perea was exiled and died ten years ago in A.D. 39
    • Herod [Marcus Julius] Agrippa I, grandson of Herod the Great, raised in Rome and appointed Ethnarch of Idumea, Judea and Samaria, had died in Caesarea Marittima, Roman port of access to Judea and beyond.
King Herod Agrippa I Acts 12:19 .. he examined the guards and ordered that they be led away to execution. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and was spending time there.
    • A.D. 44, in addition to imprisoning Peter, Herod Agrippa had executed the Apostle James in Jerusalem and then traveled bank to Caesarea where he died.
    • Herod Agrippa II now governs Syria, Galilee and Perea
    • A.D. 49 The Emperor Claudius has just expelled the Jews from Rome (but not Christians)

“Claudius saw the Jews as troublemakers who undermined his right to rule, and he expelled them from Rome. Gentile Christians, however, were not expelled from Rome, which amplified Jewish-gentile animosity in the early Roman church.

A Council of Leaders addressing issues of Culture

But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.”

The Apostles and Elders of the church in Jerusalem had dealt with these issues. Peter has previously addressed the role of the Holy Spirit in accepting gentiles — even Romans of the army enforcing their government of Jerusalem in Roman Syria.

The Pharisees, who believed in the resurrection, strained to enforce Mosaic LAW among the Jews throughout the Roman Empire long before the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of the Christ prophesied throughout Scripture.

The political JEWISH party of the Pharisees chose what they believed was a defining issue of Jewish Law to present to their fellow leaders at this council in Jerusalem.

Saul of Tarsus — Paul — had been zealous for the Law as a Pharisee and understood detailed application of the Law of Moses; but he and Barnabas had also been persecuted in Asia for their proclamation of grace through the blood of Christ in accepting gentiles into the worship of God Almighty, Father of our Lord Jesus who became the redemption for the sins of Jews and gentiles alike.

The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter.

Church doctrine a line in the sand. - How will a leader or council of leaders choose what the Church will teach?
How will a leader or council of leaders decide what the Church will teach?

Illuminating the Authority of Church Councils

    (from the Greek) συνέδριον

We gentile Christians may not quickly make the connection of the importance and authority of this meeting from the Hebrew traditions of Jerusalem.

    I didn’t.

    Transliteration
    synedrion (Key)

The KJV translates Strong’s G4892 in the following manner: council (22x).

    • any assembly (esp. of magistrates, judges, ambassadors), whether convened to deliberate or pass judgment
    • any session or assembly or people deliberating or adjudicating
      • the Sanhedrin, the great council at Jerusalem, consisting of the seventy one members, viz. scribes, elders, prominent members of the high priestly families and the high priest, the president of the assembly.
      • a smaller tribunal or council which every Jewish town had for the decision of less important cases.

Obviously this group is NOT the seventy members of the Jewish Sanhedrin which condemned the Lord Jesus and now still decide religious issues twenty years later in similar gatherings of leadership on behalf of the Temple.

The council of Jerusalem is a smaller group of Christian men with authority over the Church anointed by the Holy Spirit.

Luke does NOT call this key meeting of Christian leadership in Jerusalem a synedrion or council (though it is).

Many Bible translations accurately add a heading to ACTS of the Apostles 15:

The Jerusalem Council [ESV], The Council at Jerusalem [NIV], The Council in Jerusalem [NASB]

Circumcision – Not Really the Issue

Recall that Peter, Paul and many leaders of the Church must address MANY issues at odds between the opposing cultures of the Jews and the Greeks, Romans — any gentiles seeking to worship the Lord God.

    Is the issue food?

    Who should worship the Lord?

Where? When? What will our corporate worship gathering look like each week?

How will gatherings of worshipers of different cultures agree as a ‘church’ to follow and teach only certain rules or doctrine?

As a reminder to my fellow gentile Christians, a quick look at circumcision:

    περιτέμνω - Lexicon :: Strong's G4059 - peritemnō
    - cut off one's prepuce (used of that well known rite by which not only the male children of the Israelites, on the eighth day after birth, but subsequently also "proselytes of righteousness" were consecrated to Jehovah and introduced into the number of his people)

    - since by the rite of circumcision a man was separated from the unclean world and dedicated to God, the word is transferred to denote the extinguishing of lusts and the removal of sins

    10:12 וְעַתָּה יִשְׂרָאֵל מָה יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ שֹׁאֵל מֵעִמָּךְ כִּי אִם־לְיִרְאָה אֶת־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לָלֶכֶת בְּכָל־דְּרָכָיו וּלְאַהֲבָה אֹתוֹ וְלַֽעֲבֹד אֶת־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּכָל־לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל־נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃

“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.. Deuteronomy 10:12 ESV

    10:16 וּמַלְתֶּם אֵת עָרְלַת לְבַבְכֶם וְעָרְפְּכֶם לֹא תַקְשׁוּ עֽוֹד׃

Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn.

Deuteronomy 10:16 ESV – the word of the Lord through Moses

The issue presented to the council is not the actual symbolic act OR the Law of Moses OR one culture being cleansed to become as the flesh of another. Circumcision is NOT the issue, but the underlying stubbornness of the hearts of believers and worshipers to agree.

Peter’s Leadership of the Council at Jerusalem

The church at Jerusalem is now being led by James son of Joseph and Mary.

It has its own elders as well as deacons anointed by the Holy Spirit to serve under the Twelve (which now includes Mathias).

Peter understands that in these times of persecution other Apostles will also be killed as was the James the greater by Herod and other leaders such at Stephen.

We learned during the first mission trip of Paul and Barnabas how they modeled leadership of the the local churches after the church at Antioch Syria, not actually the church in Jerusalem where this council has gathered.

Antioch Syria where the followers of Jesus were first called Christians became a model for church leadership in Asia and Greece.

Simon Peter’s Instruction to the Council

ACTS 15:7 And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them,

“Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.

10 Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?

But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.”

12 And all the assembly fell silent..

Here is true leadership by the Apostle, even though technically Peter has no active role in leadership in Antioch, any of the Asian churches or even the Apostle’s own local gathering in Jerusalem.

What else could this diverse group of leaders do? They fell silent, withholding their former opinions and cultural differences concerning worship.

NO, circumcision was not really the issue — other than the circumcision of their own hearts which the Apostle has just cut to the quick.

Therefore the council now listens to the evidence presented to them (which Luke has already outlined from the recent first mission of Paul and Barnabas) with ears to hear.

.. and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.

    A Pastor’s Response

NEXT we will take a look at the leadership of Jerusalem’s Pastor James after Paul and Barnabas finished speaking.

ACTS of the Jerusalem Council TO BE CONTINUED, God-willing…
