You Will Not Be Led -2- Lot’s Wife

    WHAT JUST HAPPENED!?!

As the world reports with great frequency, something BIG just happened (somewhere); and now you ask (if again threat of impending doom is not dire), “What does this have to do with Lot’s wife?”

If kings or enemies have caused it, let’s quickly CONVICT them so they cannot do this to US again.

And if ‘mother nature’ reeks unpredicted peril to our precious environment of sin, let’s legislate change (to keep things the same).

    Lot’s wife

    • Do we even know her name?

No, only the caution (and we don’t know much about that).

    • Do you know who Lot is?

    Perhaps, but not fully.

    • How about their home town: do you know where they lived?

Not really. (I think they had to leave suddenly, but I don’t know how they got there or where they went when they left.

Kings, alliances, wars & ordinary men

“When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be frightened; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end.

    Mark 13:7 NASB

Powerful and ambitious men and kings frequently impact the everyday lives of those in their path. This warning of Jesus about WHEN the end will come is given millennia beyond the times of Abraham and Lot.

Even now as in every age we see kings and wars affect the outcomes of life, even for men of faith like Abraham, Moses or David.

Sojourners in the lands of kings

“For we are sojourners before You, and tenants, as all our fathers were; our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope.

1 Chronicles 29:15 WLC, NASB – words of the shepherd king, David

Who was Lot? (& where is he from?)

Really, like Abraham, Lot was a shepherd sojourner a long way from home (back in kingdoms of the eastern kings near Haran and river Euphrates) now traveling in a land of western kings near the Jordan (or southern kings like those along the Nile).

    • Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there. – Genesis 11:31
    • Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his nephew, and all their possessions which they had accumulated, and the persons which they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan; thus they came to the land of Canaan. – Genesis 12:4b-5
    • So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, he and his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot with him.. Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. – Genesis 13:1,5

Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere—this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar.

Genesis 13:10 – Lot separates from Abram

Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom. – Genesis 13:12

(Of course, shepherds follow sheep to places of pasture.)

Ordinary men near cities of kings

By grace of the Lord God, Abraham and Lot, shepherds called into other lands were leaders of men (although not kings of cities as were the men with whom they kept covenants to live nearby).

    • Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents. And the land could not support both of them while living together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to remain together.. Now the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time. – Genesis 13:5-6,7b
    • When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he led out his trained men, born in his house, numbering 318, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

These are not poor men, but ambitions merchants of wool trading with men of other leaders(i.e. kings of nearby cities) to support their own wives, children and servants, men protecting their households – tents, at times – and goods (the sheep of their pastures).

Are we not ordinary men caught up in the struggles of the powerful men of the world struggling for advantage against each other, even though the Lord is our Shepherd?

    The Alliances of War

    Genesis 14:

And it came to pass.. That these made war..

We need not get into the details of who were the ‘democrats’ or ‘republicans,’ so to speak, among these big city kings opposed to each other.

The outcome will later prove to be the end for Lot’s wife and a blot on Lot’s legacy which lingers for all time as a warning to any dwelling too near the city of destruction destined by sin. (Read it for yourself, if you’d like.)

    Brief highlights:

    • Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations VS.
    • Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (Zoar).
    • The battle takes place in the Siddim Valley, near the Salt Sea.

10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell into them. But those who survived fled to the hill country. 11 Then they took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food supply, and departed.

    Captured, then rescued

The kings where Lot and his family lived lost the war and all of them (including the wives of the men, riches and sheep) became the spoils of war to the winning kings.

BUT, Abraham hears of it and saves not only Lot, but many others.

16 He brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his relative Lot with his possessions, and also the women, and the other people.

17 Then after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

(After its rescue, it seems the city of Sodom has a new king.) An important communion of the victorious kings takes place here when Abraham returns. Our focus today, however, is only on Sodom.

Avram gave him a tenth of everything.

It is Abraham, the victorious shepherd (though not a king) who with the help of the Lord returns from battle with the spoils of victory.

21 The king of S’dom said to Avram, “Give me the people, and keep the goods for yourself.” But Avram answered the king of S’dom,

“I have raised my hand in an oath to Adonai, El ‘Elyon, maker of heaven and earth, that I will not take so much as a thread or a sandal thong of anything that is yours..

Therefore, Lot, his wife and daughters and servants were returned to the land near Sodom, where they moved within the walls of the wicked city of the land they entered as sojourners.

    Messengers of Mamre

22 The men turned away from there and went toward S’dom, but Avraham remained standing before Adonai.

  • You Will Not Be Led into the Promised Land

    Introduction:

This brief NEW series is about God and the LORD’s own relationship to man. It follows a pilgrimage from which many turn away.

These human failings by some from the Bible serve as cautions to those journeying toward the eternal place where the Lord welcomes those who do not refuse to follow.

    And God said:

There’s something about God [‘ĕlōhîm – אֱלֹהִים] you need to understand from the beginning. When God said, it is; that is, God’s word given to man is always a promise.

By contrast and by our tendency to turn from God, men (and women) break our promises, violate our vows and void our covenants with our Creator, even as as we do with our ‘fellow man.’

We are familiar with God as Creator, the One breathing life into men of dust, the One creating a living soul within living and breathing beings. ONLY GOD can do this!

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

    Genesis 2:7 KJB

The LORD speaks it, it is.

IN THE BEGINNING, GOD creates; but once He makes man [‘āḏām], a relationship between God and man begins.

Moses’ refers to this relationship, here is ‘the Lord God.’ [yᵊhōvâ ‘ĕlōhîm]. God’s chosen should speak of their relationship with the LORD God, the existing One, WHO IS HOLY or separated.

The LORD is G_d and man is not.

Deceit, sin and turning from the Lord God began in the paradise of our creation. We hid from God and man still tries to hide from God.

Ark Encounter full size replica of Noah's ark

    Covenant

Man was created with complete freedom — freedom to believe God in righteousness. Yet man violated a simple command. We just ‘had to know.’

Mankind wants to have our personal and unique knowledge of what is good and what is evil. I want to judge for myself what and who is good and choose to do evil IF it pleases me.

Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

    Genesis 6:5 NASB

What follows in Genesis, yet precedes the saving of one faithful man Noah, is sad indeed.

As a father or mother grieves for their child who turns away from the loving parental relationship, so does the LORD, Father of all mankind, sorrow for the souls of men.

Roger @ talk of Jesus {dot}.com – on Genesis 6:6

And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

    Genesis 6:6 KJV

Consequently after the DESTRUCTION of ALL MANKIND by water the LORD enters into a covenant a contract between God and man.

“I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.”

    Genesis 9:11

Evil men may appropriate the symbolism of God’s seal in the sky to include all sin into the pantheon of earth worship.

    Promise of the End

The LORD’s covenant with man not to destroy by flood provides no promise that the end will not come; and yes, a judgment of all flesh will follow. Do not be impatient for justice or the day of the end.

Men will no longer worship mother nature, but bow down to Christ Jesus, our only Redeemer of sinful flesh.

No covenant of man or offering to an environment of air breathed through masks can prevent the end which the Word has revealed through the Prophets, a new heaven and earth for the resurrection bodies of the chosen faithful. We have just examined part of this mystery revealed through Christ to John in Apocalypse 10 + Gospel of the Seventh Seal.

    • Will you have life after death?
      • Yes! But to what end?

The Lord will judge the unrepentant in the fire and judge His own creation at the end of days!

    Covenant between God and Abram

The Lord God begins again on a cleansed earth by fathering a people and making several covenants with Abraham.

In this brief series we cannot blaze a trail of a history of covenants between God and man; but understand that broken covenants, including those of Abraham, Israel (Jacob) and Moses, are broken NOT by God, but by many descendants of the promise.

And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

    Exodus 2:24 KJV

Descendants of the OATHS of their FATHERS remain BOUND to the same AGEEMENTS between the LORD God and a mortal man.

Those covenants prescribed penalty for breaking our word with the Lord God.

    The Road Ahead

    • Lot’s Wife
    • Death in the Wilderness
    • Only Two

The Lord God will redeem His people at a time of His own choosing. It is NOT a time of our choosing.

And the cleansing of sin, judgment of souls and refining of faith occurs by the Holy Spirit through His Word and only Son of our righteousness, who IS the Messiah Jesus.

Sinful man in every generation, before the incarnation of the Son of God and until this day, breaks covenant with God time and time again, turning away from the Lord our God, our only hope.

Even by Christ’s new covenant of redemption for our sins, followers of Jesus Christ must heed the warnings of scripture.

Read how those who turned from God to their own ways, as is our own tendency even in this year of our Lord 2021, were rightfully judged. Note the warnings from this brief look at just a few of mankind’s many moments of faithlessness.

I pray that you may once again turn toward the Light of Life and eternal life after inevitable death of the flesh and final judgment of the world.

Loneliness in the Solitary Confinement of Social Distancing

    Security

We lay intertwined embraced in warmth flowing from fingertips to toe. Our paradise shattered as I awoke to a loud knock on the door…

We will return to my reaction to this awakening later, but for now we must leave the security of our dreams to a new reality of this prison of our solitary confinement.

    Separation

    COVID19 – – & other causes

What happened to the security of our past?

    WHY a ‘new normal?’

(It’s not really normal, is it?)

We often feel like the man in prison wondering how he got there and missing his freedom of being with others.

Look into the soul of the one locked up – – – in a prison away from everyone — even in solitary confinement — to keep him safe — from other prisoners – – – to keep others – – safe from his own threatening condition.

This new reality is not like when we were back home in paradise – – home – – – with those who loved us – – – not like when our security became LIFE – – | | | – behind these confining bars – – | | | with a window looking out – – to a world virtually separated | | | from my lone soul…

We MUST get back HOME – – – – – – – for this is not our home.

    Then the LORD God said,

“It is not good for adam to be alone..

    Bereishit (Genesis) 2:18

    Sin & Trespass

    We all know what happened – – – – – –

    “Has God really said...? – – –

..you will become like God, knowing good and evil.” – – –

The TREE was desirable to the eyes, | | | but it was the one place the LORD GOD commanded adam not to go.

    Cursed is the ground because of you;
With hard labor you shall eat from it
All the days of your life.
    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

By the sweat of your face
    You shall eat bread,
Until you return to the ground,

    Because from it you were taken;

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

    For you are dust – – – – – -,

And to dust you shall return.”

    Bereishit (Genesis) 3:19

So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden,

and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

    Genesis 3:24 NASB

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Jesus, Son of the Father, the Son of adam – The Good News of John 14:

SOLITARY CONFINEMENT in the world outside the Good Garden – – – an eternal place to which the Son of adam invites those banished and condemned to DEATH . . . to return to the Lord our God and Savior.

Separated from walking in Personal relationship with THE LORD GOD . . .

    Therefore we pray:

.. and forgive us our sins,

as we have forgiven those who sin against us…

And don’t let us yield to temptation,
but rescue us from the evil one.

    Matthew 6:12-13 NLT

    Our paradise shattered!

Turn to me and be gracious to me,
For I am lonely and afflicted.

    Psalm 25:16

We will return to my dream shattered by awakening from sleep when we continue Loneliness in the Solitary Confinement..
