The Gospel is Good News to all who will humbly accept Jesus and listen to His teaching.

We refer to the four books of the Bible which tell the story of Jesus Christ as the Gospels. These books are named for their authors: Matthew, a Jewish Apostle; Mark, a disciple of the first generation who recorded accounts of Peter and the Twelve; Luke, a gentile Physician and disciple of the first century; and John, one of the Twelve Jewish Apostles chosen by Jesus.

stone wall "city of David" in Hebrew and English in Jerusalem

    about Palm Sunday in Jerusalem

Do you with eyes to see Jerusalem as it is and was in the time of Jesus see it?

a crowd of people with palm branches processing toward Jerusalem
Hosanna to the Son of David:

    It is not unlike today.

Jerusalem is no longer Holy to the Lord!

The dome of the false prophet boasts victory over the Jesus of the Jews.

Christ did not claim the city or the mount or the Temple.

The Messiah King of the Jews did not win the battle of the day.

AND thus far, JESUS has not won the battle of this day!

Jerusalem dome of the false prophet towering over temple mount
Peter, Philip and many others have encountered false teachers and false prophets from the very earliest days of Christ’s Church.

    ~ A.D. 30

Jerusalem had been taken by Rome, as it once had been conquered by Babylon.

The enemies of the Jews have their own gods. Stone idols, Myths, false prophets who are mere mortals from their cultural past, men and women who are and will remain dead.

The enemies of the Jews of Jerusalem have their own cities with their own gods

For two millennia since that notable kingly entry of the Son of Man worshiped as He approached Jerusalem, anti-Christs have opposed their own Savior, the Messiah and Eternal King of not only the Jews but a KING of KINGS over all of the world for all of time into eternity.

You must understand that these are battles for God.

These are battles AGAINST God in every generation until the last.

    CLAIM to Jerusalem is important

Is it an international island of Palestine?

Does Jerusalem legitimately reclaim its nation of Israel bequeathed once more to it by a United writ of the Nations which had opposed Zion’s rule for millennia?

Not even David ruled in Jerusalem for many years of his reign.

Yet as it is now, and in certain prescribed seasons, the hills of Jerusalem rise into a yearly international spotlight of the world. It was during one of these great feasts that the Messiah of Israel approached its gate on what Christians now call Palm Sunday.

    פֶּסַח

    pesaḥ [Passover]

Why do the Jews make pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Passover?

What were all the Jews commemorating?

And let us not forget that Jesus was a Jew - a son of man born to the line of David - the Messiah Savior of Israel making His way there on Palm Sunday.

God had saved the Hebrew people from Egypt and led them by His promise to Israel. Jerusalem was Holy to the Lord for the chosen people of the Lord.

Moses did not build the Temple.

    THE TEMPLE

Built by Solomon and completed ~957 Before Christ,

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon destroyed Solomon’s temple around 586 or 587 B.C.

model of the First Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem

Putting aside the false claims of the false prophet (that Jerusalem was not given to the Jews, but belongs to Arabs), God had a personal relationship with the Hebrew people.  Moses had met with God in the Tabernacle — a tent of worship and forerunner of the Temple.

God would make His Presence known at various times… in the Tabernacle and in the Temple.

King David brought the Tabernacle to Jerusalem.

Yet the LORD commanded that The Temple would be built by King Solomon. This was at a time when the Lord blessed Israel with great power and might for His own glory.

AND of course no good Jew would neglect a reverence and respect for:

    • Moses who had led them from slavery in Egypt,
    • David who had conquered most of the people and lands of Canaan (Palestine) and
    • Solomon, who not only built the TEMPLE but conquered vast surrounding lands, nations and peoples who then sent great riches to Israel.

(But all that had been before great division and disobedience to the LORD by generations of Kings who mostly did ‘what was evil in the sight of the LORD.)

    • Therefore the LORD’s Temple built by Solomon had been destroyed, Jerusalem captured and then both eventually restored on a much smaller scale.

Israel’s false client Kings, The Herod’s

    Herod's temple

The Temple itself (we ought to remind ourselves) is NOT the Temple Solomon built which was completely destroyed.

The Temple also was NOT the Temple Nehemiah rebuilt, but a prideful project of Herod to build back bigger than the LORD’s intention.

    A.D. 70

Herod’s Temple would be destroyed by the Romans just 40 years after Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, crucifixion and resurrection.

Christ’s entry into Jerusalem and history remain controversial even to this day in the year of our Lord, 2023.

Jesus had been rumored to have fed thousands in the wilderness just like Moses had fed the Hebrew people by the hand of God for forty years.

Word on the street had it that Jesus was approaching Jerusalem, again. AND, as always, the crowds gathered.. this time along the road from Bethany where rumor has it that this JESUS, the Galilean of Nazareth and Capernaum, had raised a man from the dead and told him to follow with the funeral crowds to Jerusalem’s Passover feast.

This time the crowds (under the watchful eyes of their Roman captors) would pour into the city as Jesus would enter like the conquering King David, look around (doing nothing) — and then leave.

But the overall purpose of the LORD God (which no mortal man understood at the time) was worship through a NEW COVENANT of grace and a personal filling of the Holy Spirit of God.

Jesus brought not the Tabernacle of God to Jerusalem, but the Very Presence of God.

    Roger@TalkofJesus.com

Jesus was coming into Jerusalem for the Passover feast. Everyone would be there… waiting for their King and Savior.

    • Did He really have the power of God?
    • Is He the promised one, as John the Baptizer had preached?

One more thing about Jerusalem and its buildings:

Llike any city, people lived there, people worked there, people visited there.

(Tourism was and still is big, especially during the big religious holidays. And of course the out-of-town tourists here for the festival are NOT all acceptable to our ‘religion‘ which celebrates this feast.)

Like anywhere else, the rich ran things and the poor just got by.

The rulers of the city were the leading Jews: Priests, Scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, Temple guards and Temple police, officials of Herod’s household and officials of Herod’s governments of the city and of the region.

All of these had their role to play. And not so unlike today the religious establishment managed the money of their patrons well.

The King IS here. He IS in the Temple.

This particular Temple was built by Herod, grandfather of this King Herod. With Rome’s help the Great King Herod had been the great builder of many great buildings in Jerusalem and the surrounding area.

As a point of fact, the Temple (of any era) was just another Grande building used as a place of worship.

Imagine the grandeur of the present-day Vatican and you will have an image of Herod’s Third Temple, where Jesus would soon make a scene after riding triumphantly to the Gate of Jerusalem on a donkey.

    Vatican City night
    Vatican City

Yet a church or Cathedral without Jesus is just a building.

The Temple without God was just a building.

BUT THIS WAS NEVER GOD’S INTENTION!
    THE LORD’S VICTORY IN JERUSALEM
WAS NEVER INTENDED FOR A PALM SUNDAY PARADE.
For this Celebration of Christ’s Holy Presence
Was just a prelude to His victory
    Of the Cross.

That’s it (for the Palm Sunday procession of Israel’s Messiah to Jerusalem).

On Monday of HOLY WEEK the Lord Jesus will have something to say about Scripture. Jesus’ ACTS in the TEMPLE will fulfill it.

Even those I will bring to My holy mountain

And make them glad in My house of prayer.

    Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar;

For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.”

    Isaiah 56:7 LSB

    To Be Continued…

  • Jerusalem, Jerusalem

    Jerusalem, Jerusalem

    Matthew 23:37 [also Luke 13:34]

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it!

How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

38 See, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

  • Endurance Toward the Cross

    Endurance Toward the Cross

…let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,

who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame…

    Hebrews 12:1b-2a

Jesus had walked… for three years (by comparison to eternity, a blink of an eye).

Having been handed the baton of faith after more forty years of my race on the wrong path, I have walked with the Lord toward the cross a mere twenty years. Though I have endured the hardship of the race (a sprint in terms of time), a marathon of pain and suffering have not yet brought me in view of the finish line.

By our certain faith we must press on toward the crown given by Christ Jesus our Lord until our time is come to pass on the baton of faith.

Jesus has his face set toward Jerusalem. The crowds have followed. Many have fallen away. Some have been saved. Some have endured.

Yet as in the life of the faithful widow; as in the life of the resurrected (Lazarus and others); as in the life of the weary Disciples and worn-down flesh of our Savior, the race is not finished.

The race is not finished for Jesus as He looks upon Jerusalem. His race is not finished until the Cross.

Neither has our race reached the finish line of faith until we, too, have drug the Cross of Christ to the sanctuary of the Holy Place of our rest.

Luke 9:23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

As we approach the HOLY WEEK of our Christian faith, I invite you to take sanctuary in our Lord Christ Jesus.

Take a fresh look at the GOSPEL, the Good News of our Salvation in the Cross by the Sacrifice of the Blood of our Lord.

READ once more the entire story of JESUS, through the witness of the Apostles John and Matthew; or the early witnesses of the church after Jesus’ resurrection: Luke and Mark.

It may be helpful to some of you if I share a portion of my own witness, although your personal time in the Gospel is a better witness.

We have begun the penitent season of Lent with a call to the church and a personal rebuke to many of us to get right with Christ Jesus in our relationships with others.

I would be remiss to neglect my own history of sinfulness by contrast to the great grace, love and righteousness of our Lord in leading me into the path of His eternal blessings.

Those who know me from the first two decades of my life have witnessed how I was raised in the church family. We all worshiped faithfully with Mom and Dad every Sunday. Then, like in most teens, rebellion. Like in most families, brokenness of relationship with each other followed. Most of us were isolated from God, set on our own paths.

Those who know me from my twenties know that I participated in ‘church’ every Sunday, while I sinned greatly. I was married, as many once did in our twenties. (I did the right thing, though most do not bother with such commitment any more.) The wife of my youth broke her vow and ran back to her daddy. I thank the Lord that she became a Christian later and pray that she has remained faithful to the Lord and to her husband.

Those who know me from my thirties know that the Lord led me to a faithful wife, a virgin, a Roman Catholic in belief, faith and practice. We married. She lived as a saint worthy of note in all her witness, while I attended church with her and all-to-frequently became enticed by several sins of the world. She remained faithful also to me, as I would never have been unfaithful to my wife in any desire for anyone else.

By the continued grace of God, we had our only child, now a grown young woman of faith much like her mother (and also like her yet unmarried at just twenty-one).

I will share the story of my salvation with you, God willing, during Holy Week on Good Friday.

Viewing the race nearer the present: after the death of my wife I remarried a woman introduced to me by mutual friends. Though she claimed to be a Baptist, she had no relationship with Christ and with other Christians. (It should have been a warning sign, but I did not heed it.) She divorced me. I continued to hold onto the Lord.

The Lord then led me a long way (from Florida to Pennsylvania) to my present Blessing, my wife Lissette. Lissette was a practicing Christian, member of a local mega-church. (We later moved, at my urging, to worship at a different church. As I said, the church is the people worshiping the Lord together in a place.)

My wife stood beside me and raised her hands in praise to Jesus (something I only rarely did in my upbringing of ‘traditional, worship). She owned Bibles (English and Spanish). She had women’s devotional books. Lissette is a Christian… as I was a christian before I was born again in the Lord in my mid-forties.

One more thing (about my wife): while we were dating (long distance) she discovered that she had cancer.

I immediately prayed to the Lord, “WHY ME?” ( a most selfish question, for it was Lissette who had the cancer). The Lord had taken my beloved wife Becky from me after just twenty-three years. I loved Lissette. “Why me,” I asked the Lord… and the Lord’s answer was immediate and clear answer to my prayer:

    “Who better?”

As God is my witness, I had prayed unceasingly on the bed of my grief in February, 1999. I had asked the Lord “Why?’ I had asked the Lord for proof of the continuing life of the soul of my beloved wife.

I contended with the Lord. I wrestled with the Lord until He would give me proof of her resurrection. The Lord gave me clear and immediate signs and assurances three times.

Finally, after three days, I let go of her soul; torn from me by the interruption of the death of one body, made one with mine.

Life is a great mystery, death even more mysterious. Marriage is a great mystery, love even more mysterious.

Praise the Lord, for healing my wife, Lissette, of her cancer!

The indwelling of another soul with ours is incomprehensible to this finite mind of flesh.  The outpouring of the Holy Spirit of God into the soul of the redeemed sinner is a mystery too wonderful and a love so amazing!

I love my wife, Lissette. I love the Lord.

Jesus Christ and my wife Lissette Harned are one with me. I cannot explain it.

Divorce cannot separate us (though it is a good illustration of our unfaithfulness to God).

As a grand ceremony in a place of worship or an authorized signature on a marriage license do NOT make a marriage; as a claim of a lawyer and signature of a magistrate do NOT make a divorce; a baptism, a catechism, a confirmation, an attendance star, a claim, a communion, a contribution, and MANY other things do NOT make a Christian.

No work or law or righteousness will guarantee that a christian will receive the crown of glory at the concluding celebration of Christ Jesus.

Only the Lord can save you.

Will YOU ask Jesus, once more, to fill you with HIS LOVE?

Only Christ Jesus can keep you… can keep my wife (and your beloved spouse)… can keep our children, our beloved family and beloved friends…; ONLY Jesus can save our loved ones; only Christ Jesus can save you for the joy and blessings of His love.

Please pray for me, my wife, and our three beloved children (all young adults).

As Jesus Christ approaches, the time and the place of the Cross are near.

    Which way will you turn?

To whom will you look for the finish line of your faith?
