Heaven is imagined to be many different things by many different people, yet scripture guarantees the glory of heaven is worship of the LORD forever. Scripture also describes heaven as Holy. Christ Jesus IS the only way we will live to worship God in heaven forever.

    The Whole Truth

    John 14: 6 Jesus said to him,

    “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

    There’s always something someone does not tell you when you meet them. You buy a house or rent an apartment and they don’t mention that the toilet doesn’t flush right. An acquaintance tells you about their great job, but they fail to mention how they were fired from a previous job. You meet someone who claims to love their kids and discover later how their children have little respect for their own parent. In fact, we encounter hidden truths every day as we discover more and more of the hearts and lives of our loved ones. We are all sinners (and hypocritical to some degree).

    At one time our courts would ask: ‘Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?’ ‘I do,’ was the expected response. Now the ‘I do’ response has no more expectation of truth than the promise of marriage, by rule without God by courts contemptible to the Law and also to truth. *But that controversial topic is for another discussion. Any two may be married by law and easily divorced by their own will without consent or knowledge of the other. *The lawyers are manipulators of justice and challengers to righteousness, as was so often the case in conversations with our Lord, Christ Jesus.

    Jesus Christ made a claim: “I am the only way to the Father.” What does that mean? What does it mean to Christians? What does it mean to faithful Jews, faithful Muslims, faithful Hindus, Buddhists and the like?

    Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to God.

    Have you ever truly considered the judgment seat of Christ? Considering that Jesus Christ is the only way to God and eternal life, how do you think these others will do? And how will you fare before the Throne of God’s judgment?

    Guilty? or Innocent?

    What is HIS verdict?

    O, foolish follower – O, rebellious believer – O, obstinate perishing vessel of flesh:

    You have no hope without Christ Jesus. This is the truth.

    God’s Righteous Judgment

    2 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience,not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

    6 He will render to each one according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8 but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.

    God’s Judgment and the Law

    12 For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when,according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

     

    Yes, the Jews have the Law by which to be judged. A few Jews are most righteous (though many are as selfish and ungodly as many of our christian sisters and brothers).

    Matthew 5:17-20

    Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

    17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

    May God have mercy on those many Jews, many Muslims and many christians who do in practice and by the fruit of their faith have such righteousness as exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees.

    In fact, why do I pray for these lost ones, even christians?

    Life is not life in our body, as so many feed by the pleasures and comforts of the flesh. Life is life in the spirit. You are the spirit within you, not just the brain and the blood, the neurons and the organs. It is the heart, in the sense of the soul (not the heart of muscle and corpuscle) of with the Bible speaks. It is your heart which is judged and your soul with will suffer.

    You have no need of the further torment of your flesh eternally or the temporal joy of that which is passing.

    Jesus is life to you. Jesus is life to me. He IS the resurrection and the life.

    John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

     

    And a less familiar reminder to christians who have turned from the whole truth of Jesus Christ and those attracted to Him:

    5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection.

    Judgment Before the Great White Throne

    11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened.

    Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

    15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

     

    The Revelation of the risen Christ Jesus to the Apostle John speaks of ALL SOULS.

    Christ uncovers the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

    As you stand naked in your sin before the Sinless One, what is your plea?

    Dear Lord, Have mercy on me, a sinner.

  • We Gather Together

    We Gather Together

    Perhaps you know the Thanksgiving hymn, “We Gather Together.”

    Look to the lyrics of the hymn of thanks and give thought to them:

    1.	We gather together 
	to ask the Lord's blessing; 
	he chastens and hastens 
	his will to make known.  
	The wicked oppressing 
	now cease from distressing.  
	Sing praises to his name, 
	he forgets not his own.

2.	Beside us to guide us, 
	our God with us joining, 
	ordaining, maintaining 
	his kingdom divine; 
	so from the beginning 
	the fight we were winning; 
	thou, Lord, wast at our side, 
	all glory be thine!

3.	We all do extol thee, 
	thou leader triumphant, 
	and pray that thou still 
	our defender wilt be.  
	Let thy congregation 
	escape tribulation; 
	thy name be ever praised!  
	O Lord, make us free!

We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing. Yes, that's what Thanksgiving is all about. Yet dig deeper into the text of this formerly well-known Thanksgiving hymn (many churches no longer offer a service of Thanksgiving) and find more for which to be thankful.

To begin, here is an interesting looking a probable emergence of the hymn: The Surprising Origins of "We Gather Together"

    “We gather together” is cherished as yearly opportunity for family gatherings; however further examination of the lyrics suggest an occasion of worship “to ask the Lord’s blessing.”

    Do you gather together with other Christians (not just family) regularly to ask the Lord’s blessing? And if you do not bless God, would it not be appropriate for God to curse you? Therefore, let us always give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    And if we receive blessings from the Lord day by day (and we do, if you will take note of these), should we not thank the Lord each and every day even as was ask the Lord’s blessing on the food and full provision for our lives?

    “He chastens…”

    Chaste: there’s a word you don’t see in the Christmas ads on T.V. or anywhere else.

    Chasten:

    1. to be instructed or taught or learn, correct,
    2. of those who are moulding the character of others by reproof and admonition
    3. of God to chasten by the affliction of evils and calamities

     Revelation 3:19

    As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

    What does it mean that the Lord rebukes and chastens his beloved (you an me, dear brothers and sisters in Christ)?

    Perhaps you think that Thanksgiving is not a time for ‘rebuke’ from the Lord. Yet if we are unrepentant in our relationship to the Lord and in our relationships to each other, I can think of no better time for a loving Father to rebuke and correct His children, even adopted children through the Cross of our Lord, His only Son, Jesus Christ.

    He chastens AND…

    “… and hastens His will to make known.”

    “Thy will be done,” is the prayer we all pray.

    What is God’s will for you? Do you want to God’s will when you finally get around to it? Or if we listen to the lyric, it would seem that God would make haste in our measured days to make His will know to us.

    “The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.”

    A definition (as if we need a reminder): oppression – prolonged cruel or unjust treatment, mental pressure or distress

    The world surrounds us with wicked oppressing; but thank be to God for redeeming us from oppression of our our sin. Is anything more oppressing than sin? Yet by grace we may cease from distressing over the punishment of the Father we truly deserve.

    And what should be our response to the lifting of our oppression from us by the grace of the Cross?

    “Sing praises to his name…”

    Indeed, Thanksgiving is all about worship of God our Father and Christ Jesus.

    Thank God; for:

    “… he forgets not his own.”

    Colossians 1

    English Standard Version (ESV)

    11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

    Verse 2.

    Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining…

    Encouraged?  You know this from the Christmas message:

    Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
    and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

    “… ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine;”

    Jesus began the Kingdom. Jesus maintains His Kingdom. Jesus will return for His subjects… His family.  He will reign.

    We thought that we were losing out on life, but by accepting Jesus as our King we cannot be defeated.

    Hebrews 12: 1b-2 NKJV

    … let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

    “so from the beginning the fight we were winning; thou lord wast at our side,”

    Isn’t it comforting to know in our daily struggles that Jesus stands right there with us? It’s just one more reason to praise him.

    “all glory be thine!”

    Verse 3

    “We all to extol thee, thou leader triumphant,”

    ‘Extol.’ It’s an old word that has fallen from our vocabulary. It means to praise enthusiastically. Furthermore, it is appropriate to make mention of another old English usage that has fallen by the wayside. The King James Version of the Bible remains popular with many because of its use of ‘thee and thou.’ It is a proper reverence for God and Christ, lost in familiarity of worshipers bordering on disrespect. Our attitude of worship (as a church and in our family and personal life) should at the very least show God the respect due a father. Often, it does not.

    Jesus has triumphed over death… and He did it for us. IF Jesus is our Lord, He IS our leader triumphant.

    “and pray that thou still our defender wilt be.”

    We will be raised up with Him at the Judgment.

    1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

    “Let thy congregation escape tribulation;”

    Do you know what tribulation is really? According to the Oxford Dictionary, its a cause of great trouble or suffering.

    First century Christians suffered much tribulation from evil men opposed to Christ. Last century Christians will suffer a worse tribulation under the oppression of the Antichrist and the persecution by all those opposed to Jesus Christ as Lord. Yet we are victorious in Christ Jesus, who has overcome death, will defeat Satan, and rule a new heaven and a new earth. We will reign with Jesus our Lord!

    For this we ought to have much thanks giving.

    “thy name be ever praised!”

    And one final plea of the hymn (only it is not for freedom from tyrants):

    “O, Lord, make us free.”

     Are you part of the family of God? Or do you remain a slave to your sin?

    John 8: ““Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

    You may gather with ‘family’ and give brief thanks for too much food; but Thanksgiving is much more than this.

    Psalm 102:18-22

    Let this be recorded for a generation to come,
    so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD:

    that he looked down from his holy height;
    from heaven the LORD looked at the earth,

    to hear the groans of the prisoners,
    to set free those who were doomed to die,

    that they may declare in Zion the name of the LORD,
    and in Jerusalem his praise,

    when peoples gather together,
    and kingdoms, to worship the LORD.

     Happy Thanksgiving.

    Praise the Lord.

    Jesus IS Lord.

    Thank God

    ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    Then shall the Priest, turning to the people, rehearse distinctly all the TEN COMMANDMENTS: and the people still kneeling shall after every Commandment ask God mercy for their transgression thereof for the time past, and grace to keep the same for the time to come, as followeth.

    In worship we have finally bowed down to God. We have repented of our sin. We seek His holiness through the Cross of Christ Jesus.

    Though I could have chosen liturgy of many denominations of our Lord’s church, we exam ourselves through the part of the liturgy of communion in the Anglican Church.

    BCP – Holy Communion

    Then shall the Priest say to them that come to receive the holy Communion,

    YE that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

    I ask you to pause here: Consider our position before God in light of our examination of scripture, sin and righteousness, the heavens above and hell beneath; in the light of the cross of Christ and hopelessness of our own nature to sin against our Lord, rather than to worship Him and bow down to His will. Do our sinful lives not require His grace?

    Therefore let us put off the soiled garments of our hypocrisy and confess our sins before Almighty God.

    Then shall this general Confession be made, in the name of all those that are minded to receive the holy Communion, by one of the Ministers: both he and all the people kneeling humbly upon their knees and saying,

    ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we from time to time most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against thy Divine Majesty, Provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

    These words always stuck in my craw as I remembered my sin:

    We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness. 

    “…Which we from time to time…” is most kind; for by thought, word and deed are we not constant sinners?

    Do we not well deserve the wrath of God and punishment of hell?

    Yet God is a loving Father of all mercies, who sent to us his only Son, even as a sacrifice on the cross for your sin and mine; for the sins of the world, those saved and those yet to be saved.

    This is mercy. This is grace. This is the highest reason for a sinner like me, a lowly creation of a loving God, to worship and bow down to God our Father in Heaven and Christ Jesus, Sacrifice of His love for us on the Cross.

    It is our duty and obligation of this sinful flesh, formed by God and given the life of His Spirit, to bow down to our Creator as Lord. Because of His love for us, He came to us in the flesh – the sinless flesh of Christ Jesus the only Son of the Father in Heaven. He IS and was and IS to be our Savior and Lord.

    Therefore, let us worship Christ our Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God for His Spirit and the eternal life made possible for us only by the Blood of Jesus on the Cross.

    As the Apostle Paul instructs us, let us give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
