    All roads lead to Rome

    Who has not heard the expression recalling a time of glory for the Roman Empire of the A.D. first century.?

    But this second account of the Hellenist physician Luke records that the Gospel is sent out from Jerusalem and then Antioch.

    “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

    The apostles and the brothers and sisters who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

    An Apostle known by his Letters

    As did Peter, John, James and others, the Apostle Paul communicates with converts to Christ frequently by letter, in addition to their Apostolic missions to live and worship with these believers for a time.

    Two years BEFORE Paul is brought to Rome on spurious charges of the Jews and the Apostle’s appeal to Caesar Nero (as a Roman citizen), Paul writes his masterful theological Epistle to the Romans, instructing his fellow Roman citizens in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

    We will read more of the Apostle's personal joy in meeting these Romans shortly.

    Previously, we left the Apostle having survived a shipwreck in Malta.

    The Centurion Julius, the Apostle Paul and now more than 300 men witness the power of God in Christ’s Apostle to the gentiles delayed in a violent storm on his way to Rome.

    ACTS of the Apostles 28 – Conclusion

    After three months we set sail in an Alexandrian ship that had wintered at the island, with the Twin Gods as its figurehead.

    12 Putting in at Syracuse, we stayed three days.

    13 From there, after making a circuit along the coast, we reached Rhegium. After one day a south wind sprang up, and the second day we came to Puteoli.

    Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.

    140 miles (225 kilometers) southeast of Rome. “Puteoli” literally means “little wells” in reference to the many hydrothermal wells that were in the city, which was well-known as a large port that could accommodate big ships.

    In fact, adjacent to Puteoli was Misenum, the Roman naval base that housed the largest naval fleet in the ancient world. Earthquakes have since sunk most of Puteoli under water.

    And the brothers, when they heard about us, came from there as far as the Market of Appius and Three Inns to meet us.

    When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.

    Paul Addresses Prominent Jews of Rome

    And it happened that after three days Paul called together those who were the leading men of the Jews,

    and when they came together, he began saying to them,

    Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

    And when they had examined me, they were willing to release me because there was no ground for putting me to death. But when the Jews [spoke against me], I was forced to appeal to Caesar, not that I had any accusation against my nation.

    Note two points from Paul's self-introduction to the Roman Jews: 

    The Apostle refers to himself as a brother of these Jews, also referring to OUR people, customs and fathers [patrōos].

    Paul had identified with the fathers of the faith in defense of the Gospel before:

    “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia.. instructed .. according to the strictness of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today,

    And hear Paul’s defense in his first Trial Before Felix:

    “But this I confess to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect,

    so I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets.

    Ethnos

    The APOSTLE and ROMAN CITIZEN parenthetically adds:

    .. not that I had anything of which to accuse my nation.

    Paul has NO extra-judicial accusation against his accusers with whom he identifies by calling them: ‘MY NATION” — ἔθνος – ethnos

    • tribe, nation, people group
    • Gentiles [OT]
    • Paul uses the term for Gentile Christians

    HERE in his defense to the Jews, Paul uses ethnos to describe OTHER Jews including his Jewish accusers in Jerusalem AND those in Rome whom the Apostle has summoned.

    Luke opens Acts of the Apostles telling readers: 

    Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation G1484ethnos – under heaven.

    Understanding you (Paul) for ourselves

    These leading Jews of Rome of course know Scripture and realize that Paul preaches about the Messiah.

    And they said to him,

    “We have neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brothers come here and reported or spoken anything bad about you. But we desire to hear from you what you think;

    for concerning this sect, it is known to us that it is spoken against everywhere.”

    And when they had set a day for Paul, they came to him at his lodging in large numbers..

    and he was explaining to them by solemnly bearing witness about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets,

    from morning until evening.

    And some were being persuaded by the things spoken, but others were not believing.

    And when they disagreed with one another, they began leaving after Paul had spoken one word,

    “The Holy Spirit rightly spoke

    through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers, saying,

    And He said, “Go, and tell this people:
    ‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand;
    Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’

    And shut their eyes;

    Lest they see with their eyes,
    And hear with their ears,
    And understand with their heart,

    And return and be healed.”

    Paul’s final word for the Roman Jews

    And when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had a great dispute among themselves.

    Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who came to him,

    preaching the kingdom of God

    and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him.

    Swept asunder by the Tempest of a Euroclydon

    “Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives.”

    Paul’s prediction of the Tempest

    Certainly the Apostle to the Hellenist gentiles knew much about the waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean. He had sailed on various ships many times during missionary journeys of the past dozen years.

    And from what we know of Paul, certainly the Apostle (who knew Scripture well) would have been praying as the Greek grain ship set sail along the coast of Crete seeking cover during the tempestuous autumn and winter months.

    Perhaps Prophets such as Isaiah, who had predicted Christ as well as the new Jerusalem, would have come to mind in the Spirit calming the spirit of the Apostle Paul in comforting Scripture.

    At some point in the early itinerary of this voyage: Julius and the Roman guards; Paul and Aristarchus; and the experience captain, pilot and professional sailors — ALL certainly have realized the peril of the approaching storm.

    The Euroclydon – Winter Tempest of the Mediterranean

    Acts 27 – a short voyage swept into a billowing sea

    When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their desire, putting out to sea, they sailed close by Crete.

    But not long after, a tempestuous head wind arose, called Euroclydon.

    Euroclydon is a term found in the New Testament, specifically in the Book of Acts, referring to a tempestuous wind that played a significant role in the Apostle Paul’s journey to Rome. The term is derived from the Greek “Eurakulōn,” which is believed to be a compound of “euros” (east wind) and “aklyōn” (north wind)

    The levanter reaches its maximum intensities in the Strait of Gibraltar, where it sometimes brings eastward-flying airplanes almost to a standstill… results from a merging of the clockwise winds of a high-pressure centre over central Europe with the counterclockwise winds of a low-pressure centre over the southwestern Mediterranean.

    So when the ship was caught, and could not head into the wind, we let her drive.

    Καῦδα – a small island nearly due west of Cape Malta on the south coast of Crete, and nearly due south of Phoenice.

    And running under the shelter of an island called Clauda,we secured the skiff with difficulty.

    When they had taken it on board, they used cables to undergird the ship;

    and fearing lest they should run aground on the Syrtis Sands [quicksands],

    they struck sail and so were driven.


    The Tempest toward Malta

    The voyagers knew that the gale was bearing them in that direction, and did not dare to let the ship sail on full before the wind any longer.

    Strake sail.—The English fails to give the sense of the original. Had they struck sail altogether the ship would simply have drifted in the very direction which they were anxious to avoid. Some sail was absolutely necessary to keep the ship steady. What is meant is that they “lowered the ship’s gear,” the spars and rigging, and especially, perhaps, the heavy yard and ropes which the ancient ships carried, and which would, in such a gale, make the ship top-heavy.

    And so were driven.—Better, thus—i.e., in this state, undergirded and with storm-sails set.

    They aimed at sailing as close as possible to the wind, making for the north-west, so as to avoid the Syrtes.

    Paul Convicted by the Light of Christ

    I had thought to skip past this story of Paul's too-familiar retelling of the Apostle's conversion by Christ (since Luke has already repeated it with frequency in Acts). 

    But just as Paul now witnesses with intensensity to a new audience, so shall I point to the Light of Christ JESUS that changed his life.

    In Acts 25 Paul is brought before the Governor Festus with Herod Agrippa II and his Herodian sister Bernice with great pomp (even though the Apostle has already appealed to Caesar

    Wherefore, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to those at Damascus, then at Jerusalem and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and perform deeds worthy of their repentance.

    The Apostle witnesses the Gospel in his own defence before Agrippa the King and his Herodian sister, as well as the Roman Governor Porcius Festus for a second time.

    • then at Jerusalem
    • and throughout Judea,
    • and also to the Gentiles

    For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me.

    To this day I have had the help that comes from God,

    saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would come to pass:

    Paul then quotes Scripture - the Old Testment Scriptures

    that the Christ must suffer

    And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

    Light to the People (of God – the Jews)

    The Greeks have no Messiah — nor the Romans — nor did the Persians, the Babylonians or the Egyptians.

    ONLY the JEWS. — Only the Jews are the PEOPLE of YHWH — the chosen PEOPLE of God.

    When Paul points to the ‘people,’ the Apostle means the Jewish people, like Agrippa, Bernice and many other Herodian guests and officials hearing his argument.

    The Christian Standard Version makes this point clearly:

    “that the Messiah [christos] would suffer, and that, as the first to rise from the dead,

    he would proclaim light to our people

    and to the Gentiles [ethnos].”

    Acts 26:23

    JESUS is the MESSIAH or Christ of the JEWS!

    Yet the Apostle to the ethnos, Saul (from the Hebrew) or Paul makes clear what the risen CHRIST has done ALSO for the gentiles.

    and to the Gentiles.”

    To THIS the Gentile Governor reacts!

    Now remember that in addition to what the Governor knows from his predecessor Felix, Festus had already heard Paul's witness at length. 

    Now as he thus made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice,

    “Paul, you are beside yourself! Much learning is driving you mad!”

    “I am not mad, most noble Festus, but speak the words of truth and reason.

    Now Paul's appeal is to Herod Agrippa, Bernice and the Jews in his hearing.

    For the king, before whom I also speak freely, knows these things;

    for I am convinced that none of these things escapes his attention, since this thing was not done in a corner.

    Acts 24:26

    The Jewish King responds

    The Apostle defending the appearance of the risen Messiah of the Jews most certainly turns his own focus to the Herodian king claiming leadership of God’s chosen people.

    “King Agrippa,

    do you believe the prophets?

    I know that you do believe.”

    Again, certainly Paul turns to Herod Agrippa II while the entire room also looks to the Jewish king for his answer. 
    The NIV perhaps catches the tone of Agrippa's meaning more clearly than the NKJV

    Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?”

    Herod Agrippa is on the spot. Some of the Jews hearing Paul may be convinced that Jesus appeared to the Apostle. But most of Agrippa’s subjects will not have ears to hear even the Prophets.

    The Light of Christ

    Why has Luke recorded this third trial of Paul in Caesarea reiterating the Apostle’s same witness of the risen Christ Jesus?

    This is Paul’s last appeal to the Jews.

    The Apostle witnesses not only his own conversion and the evidence of the risen Messiah Jesus, but supports his new Gospel with the evidence of Scripture.

    “I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness,
    And will hold Your hand;
    I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people,
    As a light to the Gentiles,

    Indeed He says,
    ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant

    To raise up the tribes of Jacob,
    And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;

    I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,

    That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”

    Agrippa’s hearing of Paul adjourned.

    When he had said these things, the king stood up,

    as well as the governor and Bernice and those who sat with them;

    and when they had gone aside, they talked among themselves saying,

    “This man is doing nothing deserving of death or chains.”

    Then Agrippa said to Festus,

    “This man might have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar.”

    And when it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to one named Julius, a centurion of the Augustan Regiment.
