    Depart from me…

    Picture the stoic traditionalist teachers of the Bible venturing out from the mega-cathedral to a far from urban valley of the Jordan and encountering a crowd that should be in church.  They are listening to an unkempt man with uncut hair and rags of animal skins and leather. As they descend the dirty hillside toward the river in their custom-made finery, he acknowledges their addition to the crowds.

    “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance…  Matthew 3:

    Pretty bold talk from a Nazarite to esteemed teachers of the Law from the Temple. Could John have had Psalm 119 in mind?

     Psalm 119 – English Standard Version (ESV)

    Your Word Is a Lamp to My Feet

    Samekh

    113 I hate the double-minded,
    but I love your law.
    114 You are my hiding place and my shield;
    I hope in your word.
    115 Depart from me, you evildoers,
    that I may keep the commandments of my God.

    Although the EST statement ‘I hate the double-minded,’ brings hated hypocrites like the Pharisees, Sadducees, certain preachers and christians to mind, the KJV stated: ‘I hate vain thoughts.’

    Indeed, the Psalmist is not condemning (yet) those with double-minded thoughts.  John, as he baptized and cleansed into repentance those in the crowds with ears to hear was not hiding in the Jordan valley; rather his hiding place was in the Lord and in the hope of God’s word.

    All of us must take heed to vain thoughts and ideas of our own (not of God). Vain thoughts are ambivalent, divided and half-hearted. Of course we are to love the Lord our God with all our mind (not just some of it). Hypocrisy, like that frequently demonstrated by the Pharisees is the intentional action of a double-minded believer.

    John continues his warnings to his audience:

    10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

    This same double-minded, half-hearted faith comes to mind in Jesus parable in Matthew 7:

    17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

    Christ Jesus was also most critical of this half-attitude of belief. In these last days, the axe is at the root of the tree of the church.

    The Psalmist continues his plea to God:

    116 Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live,
    and let me not be put to shame in my hope!
    117 Hold me up, that I may be safe
    and have regard for your statutes continually!
    118 You spurn all who go astray from your statutes,
    for their cunning is in vain.

    119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross,
    therefore I love your testimonies.
    120 My flesh trembles for fear of you,
    and I am afraid of your judgments.

    Again, we did not receive the baptism of repentance and the cleansing of the Cross of Christ to appear as dross to a world that looks to the church and christians for every defect and impurity.

    “Be holy, as I am holy,” says the Lord.

    Your Word Is a Lamp to My Feet

    Heth (Cheth)

    57 The Lord is my portion;
    I promise to keep your words.

    The LORD is my portion.

    What does this mean to you?

    To begin, let us disavow the popular preaching from the mega-pulpits of false teaching that God’s blessings are yours to name and claim: God gives us our ‘portion‘ for HIS glory and not ours in the eyes of men.

    You, O Lord, are our inheritance! You are our portion for heaven after we have died to our own wills of greed and self-indulgence.

    58 I entreat your favor with all my heart;
    be gracious to me according to your promise.

    I come to you in weakness, in my sickness of heart. With all of my heart (not just a portion set aside for god) I beg you for your favor. NOT ‘favor’ as in a favorite son, but favor as in, Have mercy on me, a sinner.

    59 When I think on my ways,
    I turn my feet to your testimonies;
    60 I hasten and do not delay
    to keep your commandments.
    61 Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me,
    I do not forget your law.
    62 At midnight I rise to praise you,
    because of your righteous rules.

    When you are in trouble do you rise to praise the Lord?

    Now follows the importance of Christian community: one Christian for the support of all other Christians who also fear the Lord:

    63 I am a companion of all who fear you,
    of those who keep your precepts.
    64 The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love;
    teach me your statutes!

    The Lord is faithful, even unto death. For Life is ours in Christ Jesus, who also suffered and was sacrificed for our transgressions of the law and hears our prayers and witness and calling upon Him. Jesus IS Lord.

    Teach us your statutes! It is not only a call to memorize 10 commandments or learn a number of rules; it is the plea of our heart that God will show us (His servants) what to do and how to do it His way. Our strong desire should be to hear and do all that Jesus Christ has taught us in Person.

    Do you desire the Lord to teach you His statutes? (Here is a start.)

  • Time After Time

    Time After Time

    Death is never so real as when a soul is torn from you or is life so temporal as when death overcomes your loved one.

    Ignore it as we will, we will die and we can only watch our loved ones wither into dust or be taken from us. A flesh falters and bones do tremble at the sight of the grave.  Yet some hold to our relationship between souls; we hold near to Jesus.

    John 5: 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

    When Martha spoke to Jesus of her brother Lazarus his friend she said:  “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”  This is the hope of promise for Christians. It is certain promise of the Word for the beloved souls taken from our temporal life by death.

    Christ Jesus said: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me,though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

    Martha believed this. I believe this. Do you?
