    Witnesses to Jesus Risen! – the Eleven, a Passing Witness

    The Gospel of John

    We have nearly reached the conclusion of John’s Good News. Earlier we met ten Disciples in a room where the Risen Christ appeared!

    Witnesses to Jesus Risen! – the Eleven

    20:26 A week later his disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

    Reminder to 21st. Century Readers of John’s Gospel:

    As I mentioned before, Christians to whom John writes understand events which have taken place after Jesus’ ascension, yet before John’s death.

    (We will add some of these following the next event of John’s Good News.)

    After these things Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way:

    Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

    They said to him, “We are also coming with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing.

    Of course these Galilean Disciples of Jesus would travel from Jerusalem north to their homes along the Sea of Tiberias (Galilee). John recalls which Apostles were present.

    • James, John’s older brother
    • John, author of this Gospel
    • Two others of Jesus’ disciples

    They would have launched their two or three fishing boats from docks by Capernaum and proceeded out to sea at night, returning to port near daybreak and seeing a man on shore as they approached.

    4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.

    He called out to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.”

    Children, you do not understand

    Our 21st century ears do not hear the Master’s call to His beloved servants in this way. In fact, 1st century men and women tended to be more willing to hear a fellow Jew (especially their Rabbi) or even a Roman responsible for their local Galilean town of Capernaum as humble servants.

    παιδίον – pi-de’-on

    Child – From dimin. of παῖς (G3816) can mean not only a child, boy or girl but a slave, an attendant, servant, and specifically a king’s attendant, one who ministers to the King.

    But once again our overfed 21st century bodies don’t quite understand what Jesus asks if they have anything eaten with bread and spoken of fish boiled or broiled.

    These children of the Shepherd Christ Jesus return from a night of work, fishing — and they have caught no fish. In effect their Lord and Master, Provider of all things to His servants asks these dear ‘children’ in His care, “Are you hungry?”

    John in recalling the incident adds, ‘yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.’

    Obeying His command

    Yes, these seven men probably were hungry after an unsuccessful night of fishing. Yet hearing His command from the shore they obeyed Jesus.

    6 He said to them, “Throw in your net to starboard and you will catch some.”

    So they threw in their net, and there were so many fish in it that they couldn’t haul it aboard.

    It was then, John tells us, that he recognized Jesus.

    “It is the Lord!”

    So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. Since they were not far from land (about a hundred yards away), the other disciples came in the [smaller] boat, dragging the net full of fish.

    Once again in a third appearance to seven disciples, Jesus demonstrates that He IS both God and a risen ‘Son of Man.’

    John tells his experience as his small boat pulling nets full of fish comes near to the beach along the shore.

    9 When they stepped ashore, they saw a fire of burning coals with a fish on it, and some bread.

    10 Yeshua said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”

    (Peter and the men have now been pulling the full nets ashore…)

    12 Yeshua said to them, “Come and have breakfast.”

    None of the talmidim (disciples of a Rabbi) dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.

    Pause.. to ‘fast forward’

    We’ll now leave Jesus and the seven Disciples sharing bread and fish with the Lord and (in 21st c. parlance) fast forward to events known to many readers of John’s Good News, but possibly not known to most Christians in the 21st c. digital age.

    John, Messenger of God’s Love

    This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. – John 21:24
    True? You could ask to know about the Lord God or about the Messiah Christ Jesus, but some will always ask of the Gospel, “Who says?” It’s a fair question, since many deceivers have gone out into the world making false claims about God. For our best answer we need to think of John in two entirely different contexts. First as the youngest Apostle of Jesus Christ and lastly, much later as an Elder. The one testifying to the Truth is the last surviving Disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.

    Who is John and why does he give us Good News about Christ Jesus?

    Our visualization of Jesus and John shows an unparalleled love of a father or teacher for His nearest follower. Therefore, we cannot think of John without thinking of love in the Person of Christ Jesus. John, son of Zebedee and his older brother James, son of Zebedee, both follow Jesus, as do Simon Peter and others. ‘Zebedee and Sons’ could have been the sign for their family fishing business. Simon also made his living as fishermen, perhaps even as a foreman for Zebedee and sons.
    And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men. Mark 1:17

    His Closest Friends

    Who knows Jesus best among the Disciples? And which Disciple remains nearest to the rabbi who claims to be the Truth? His inner circle, comprised of Peter, James and John. True to the nature of the Lord, Jesus chooses humble followers. This Disciple is humble like Moses and a young man like the anointed David. This younger son of Zebedee the fisherman fits the role of an eager servant who loves his Lord and Master.
    Young John learns the heart of Jesus and shares his love with us.
    So the Lord calls these managers of a Galilean fishing cooperative to become ‘fishers of men.’ He includes Peter, James and John the younger brother in His inner circle of the Twelve. The gospels also reveal that Salome, mother of John and James, followed Jesus. They all love Christ Jesus with an interpersonal familial love.

    The Great Commission of Love

    One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining close beside Jesus. – John 13:23
    Jesus then asks of His friends:
    “As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love. – John 15:9
    After Jesus’ crucifixion and death all of them return home to their fishing business.
    The disciple, the one Jesus loved, said to Peter, “It is the Lord! ”

    When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer clothing around him (for he had taken it off) and plunged into the sea. – John 21:7 John would have still been a young man and Simon Peter alive, of course, before the days of his own martyrdom.

    Evidence of Truth

    The truth and testimony of John’s Good News would have been recorded over several years during his own ministry well into old age.
    Most scholars say it was written in the early 90’s. This means that the time span between the original writing of John and its earliest copy (fragment) is approximately 35-45 years. Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry
    The writer of the gospel of John was obviously an eyewitness of the events of Christ’s life since he speaks from a perspective of having been there during many of the events of Jesus’ ministry and displays a good knowledge of Israeli geography and customs. The John Rylands papyrus fragment 52 of John’s gospel dated in the year 125-135 contains portions of John 18, verses 31-33,37-38. This fragment was found in Egypt. It is the last of the gospels and appears to have been written in the 80’s to 90’s.

    John, Letters from the Elder

    XVI. John The “beloved disciple,” was brother to James the Great. The churches of Smyrna, Pergamos, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea, and Thyatira, were founded by him. From Ephesus he was ordered to be sent to Rome, where it is affirmed he was cast into a cauldron of boiling oil. He escaped by miracle, without injury. Domitian afterwards banished him to the Isle of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Nerva, the successor of Domitian, recalled him. He was the only apostle who escaped a violent death.     John’s three letters to the churches he fathers [mentioned above] are thought to have been written around in about AD 65, some than thirty years after Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Research [cited above] indicates that John’s Gospel, recorded on scrolls over a period of years, was likely completed later than John’s letters. Prior to completion of his Gospel, letters would have been delivered to each church (in modern day Turkey). They in turn would be read to the congregation then delivered to the next church on the evangelical circuit. When you want a brief, partial explanation of the Gospel the Disciple John, look to any of his letters.  His letters convey the same great hope through the love of Christ Jesus, sometimes in the very words John later with record in his Gospel.

    Christ will have the last Word

    The Revelation of Jesus Christ to John may have been written as late as the year 100, when John may have been 70-80 years old.

    I ask you, what demonstration of God’s love could be more encouraging to those who suffer for our faith than witnessing His judgement of evil? John encourages believers in the churches, the same believers he had encouraged by letter. Yet he also warns against many sins. Consequently those who suffer read of a terrible apocalypse to come! For they will be saved by the Lamb of God.
    4:4 After this I looked, and there in heaven was an open door. The first voice that I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”
    An Elder in heaven converses with John, encouraging believers who have been wronged. Revelation 7:14 Then he told me: These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

    God IS love. Jesus loves. John is the Disciple of love who best conveys God’s own love for you, for me and for those yet to be born again in spirit.

    Saints & Martyrs; Bishops & Pawns

    I want to tread this holy ground carefully, for some of you may be offended; yet please hear me out.

    911-vi911 NY TimesWe begin with the martyrs of 9/11/2001, a group of men determined for a religious cause, followers of radical Islam with a jihad vision of a Kingdom for Mohammed on earth, an angelic vision given to a prophet and a heavenly reward of intercourse with virgins given to martyrs for the glory of a prophet.

    Mankind knows no limit of evil nor glory forgotten by the sacrifice of human life.

    Yet to what end?  And for what reward?

    Are the rewards of heaven the same as those we crave for the desires of this flesh?

    We dismiss the passions of young men living lives of hopelessness, worshiping a past which glorifies war – a past which promotes culture of enforced righteousness on this evil place, a false hope of conquering peoples for the glory of the conquerors. It is nothing new under the sun.

    God is sovereign. God allows a time of evil to refine or humble mortal man. God allows the crumbling of mortal dreams into parched dust in need of the Lord’s cleansing life.

    Looking back: before America, before England, before Rome, before David and Israel; looking back to cultures of conquest and times of evil:

    Judges 4:

    And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord after Ehud died. 2 And the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-hagoyim. 3 Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help, for he had 900 chariots of iron and he oppressed the people of Israel cruelly for twenty years.

    4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time…

    [Read more of this story of war unfamiliar to me, (probably you), most Christians and most Jews. I point now to the song of the spoils of victory you will not hear preached in our ‘family sermons.’]

    Judges 5:

    Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day:

    2 “That the leaders took the lead in Israel,
    that the people offered themselves willingly,
    bless the Lord!

    19 “The kings came, they fought;
    then fought the kings of Canaan,
    at Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo;
    they got no spoils of silver.
    20 From heaven the stars fought,
    from their courses they fought against Sisera.

    28 “Out of the window she peered,
    the mother of Sisera wailed through the lattice:
    ‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
    Why tarry the hoofbeats of his chariots?’
    29 Her wisest princesses answer,
    indeed, she answers herself,
    30 ‘Have they not found and divided the spoil?—
    A womb or two for every man…

    ‘A womb or two for every man’: the expected spoils of war. And how have the women of other lands become the concubines of conquering kings and warriors? The answer you know; for in the desires of the troops and warriors burns the lust of the flesh for the rewards of this life.

    Though some would explain away the motives of the victors (be they crusaders, knights, soldiers of the war we won or draftees into the foreign lands we lost), let’s be clear about the Biblical text.

    Have they not divided the prey?

    Plunder, spoil, booty, gain. (Does a young man not continue to refer to the desirable parts of a young woman as her ‘booty?’ The meaning here and still considers the sacrifice of virgins once protected by their defeated fathers, even the wives of slain husbands – a dividing of the gain of war.

    ‘A womb of two for every man’ is translated in some versions as: a damsel, a girl, a woman, a maiden, a female, ‘two ladies to every man.’

    The motive is clear. And is this not the same motive and false promise of heaven made to the men who commandeered these planes to fly into the buildings of the city on 9/11/2001? Nothing is new under the sun.

    Read the account of the battle. Sisera had not won the battle of the day. allahu akbarHis reward was same as those who shouted, “Allahu akbar,” as their plane martyred the lives of innocents at work in New York City and Washington D.C.

    Yet to what end? And for what reward?

     

    Sisera’s reward was no different than that of IS [or ISIS], who take spoils untold of young girls as they conquer the lands of the Middle East in 2014 for the kingdom of the devil and his prophet; young men with the weapons of atheists in hand, marching against the sovereign borders of their own Muslim brothers.

    And the Lord has allowed it.
