REPENTANCE! Rated ‘R’ – but Not for Revival

    I will ransom them from the power of the grave;

I will redeem them from death:

    O death, I will be thy plagues;

O grave, I will be thy destruction:

repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

    Hosea 13:14 KJV

a Gathering of the Dead with NO Hope of Revival

When the Prophets spoke a convicting word of repentance to the professed chosen of the LORD, WHY didn’t THEY repent?

Could it be that THEY refused to hear ANY word of conviction – an accountably of the GOD’s indictment of SIN?

(And like THEM, who among us is not GUILTY of hiding OUR sins from the Lord as we would like to think on occasion after occasion?)

Are those ancient LEADERS and PEOPLE of Judah, Israel and the nations JUST LIKE US?

Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out - Acts 3: Peter preaching repentance
    Repentance!

Repentance oft’ served bitterly in the King James

(Of course most shepherds of Christ's 21st c. churches resist a call of evangelism by reading the KJV. Most will not preach any convicting word of God given to fallen people through His PROPHETS from ANY translation of the Holy Bible.)

After all, who comes to church to REPENT?

The Prophets use severe terms that a pastor hardly dare preach

the ‘R’ rated word of the LORD

NOT ever to be spoken to a sweetened Sunday flock of young christians, gracefully posing alongside a remnant of the faithful, as sinless sheep.

AND IF you are not repentant about your continued sins against Him don’t think that your preferred personal designation of ‘King Jesus’ will save you from the grave.

We certainly wouldn’t want our Jesus-lovers sent home sorrowful [נֹחַם] over our sin.

Yet this is exactly the other meaning of the repentance of which the Prophet speaks in saying that the LORD will hide YOUR sorrow from His eyes.

Hosea and other ‘minor’ prophets will often rail on bitterly in a specific call of repentance.

The LORD reminds Israel through Hosea’s words and obedient unexpected actions of their former disobedience to obey their promises to Him.

The LORD’s word by the mouth of His Prophets may not only be bitter and offensive, but rated ‘R’ in the church gathering of culturally inclusive Sunday audience.

So would you with ears to hear prefer to hear the LORD in easier English than the King James?
(Any translation of Scripture can be convicting to a heart open to receive the word of the Lord.)

It is your ruin, O Israel,

That you are against Me, against your help…

I gave you a king in My anger
And took him away in My wrath.

    Hosea 13:9.11 LSB

The LORD laments over Israel when He sorrowfully gave them Saul as a king —

and then David, a man after God’s own heart

    — and Solomon who built the Temple

    — and his sons who as kings of Israel and Judah lost favor, because these kings and their subjects most often refused to repent.

Returning to Hosea's calling and also the King James:

    Hosea 1:

The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea.

And the LORD said to Hosea,

Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD.

    • Would you like to go tell your President or king THAT?
    • Dare you call your congregation and country ‘children of whoredoms?’ [v.2]
    • Will you warn them “.. ye are not my people, and I will not be your God?” [v.9]

AND from there, the LORD gets even more graphic in HIS imagery of nakedness of the sin of his CHOSEN PEOPLE who bear witness to HIS NAME (supposedly).

IS THAT how we witness JESUS when we whisper to Him gracefully on Sunday?

“‘King Jesus,’ WE love what you have done for US,”

Christ gets little mention.. no honor.. no priority in six and a half days of our weekly life?

When do YOU ever Talk of JESUS outside of the walls of a ‘worship’ service?

Repent & Turn back to your Savior

Here’s the idea of Repentance when you have an argument with God:

Job 6: “my complaint is just.’ BUT finally the LORD answers Job in a whirlwind (think tornadic pillar of fire!)

Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

    Job 42:6

And Job was a righteous man!

But to the unrighteous kings, princes and people God warns Israel and commands his last Prophet of Israel, Hosea:

Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD.

    Repent – Greek – μετανοέω

Do you recognize the comfort of having your guilt removed by God when you repent of sin?

Of course YOU are not alone. For your witness of Christ our Savior ought to be that WE are included with THEM in that all have sinned [Romans 3]. JESUS paid the full price the justice of God requires (even for repentant sinners like you and me).

Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

Shepherds of 21st c. churches also resist the New Testament repentance of preaching Jesus' Revelation of THE END to sheepish christian congregations more entertained than revived.

YES, JESUS is KING of Kings and Lord of lords! Is your worship of the KING appropriate to His call to obedience?

    Lexicon :: Strong’s G3340 – metanoeō

    Outline of Biblical Usage [?]
to change one’s mind, i.e. to repent

to change one’s mind for better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one’s past sins

“Repentance (metanoia, ‘change of mind’) involves a turning with contrition from sin to God; the repentant sinner is in the proper condition to accept the divine forgiveness.” (F. F. Bruce. The Acts of the Apostles [Greek Text Commentary], London: Tyndale, 1952, p. 97.)

    Repent ye G3340 therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Acts of the Apostles 3:19 KJV

This is how Peter and the Apostles preached.

Yet Peter replied also inviting their response.

Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.

    Acts 4:4 KJV

    Revival?

    I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;
I shall redeem them from Death.
O Death, where are your plagues?
O Sheol, where is your sting?
Compassion is hidden from my eyes.

    Hosea 13:14 ESV

Aren’t followers of Jesus — Ἰησοῦς His NAME means: “Jehovah is salvation” — ransomed from the cost of sin and the power of Sheol by the price He paid on the Cross?

Since JESUS IS GOD, aren’t His followers redeemed by Him from Death?

    Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
    whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the LORD are right,
and the upright walk in them,
    but transgressors stumble in them.

Hosea 14:9 ESV – the Prophet’s closing cautions to the wise in the Lord.

The root of revival is ‘to live!’ – חָיָה

Yet Hosea warns that transgressors will stumble into Sheol and Death.

AND David sings out in Psalm 37: He Will Not Forsake His Saints

    v.38 But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;
the future of the wicked shall be cut off.

Shall the transgressor of Christ’s grace receive carte blanche revival from the grave without witness of the saving Cross of JESUS?

In fact, what did the King of kings and Lord of lords have to say about such revival?

Gospel Truth (and the Way and the Life)

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord.. And then will I declare to them,

‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

    Matthew 7:21-23 excerpt ESV

The word for lawlessness Jesus uses is: ἀνομία – anomia – its definition:

contempt and violation of law, iniquity, wickedness

When a man thought a family obligation should delay his discipleship to the Lord Jesus he received an unexpected answer from the Son of Man who could actually revive the dead:

And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”

    Matthew 8:22 ESV

NO, I do not believe that we will have REVIVAL in the Church (people, and not the building of certain Shepherds) WITHOUT first witnessing the fruit of REPENTANCE by the crowds from which Jesus fled.

What do YOU think, my fellow follower of Christ Jesus?

    Repentance OR Revival?

    Some Prophets from Jerusalem

Now in those days, some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

    ACTS 11:27 Legacy Standard Bible

A believer in Christ, follower of a false prophet, worshiper of an ancient god or iconic contemporary might easily miss the significance of these four verses from ACTS of the Apostles.

As you may recall from our previous look at ACTS 11:26, we have been in Antioch for a year now.

    https://talkofjesus.com/an-antioch-blueprint-of-church-evangelism/
Antioch was 3rd largest city in the Roman Empire, a commercial center of trade with all the world

Christians‘ – a label by outsiders

The followers of Jesus were so different from the culture around them.. Clearly the followers of the
Way’ .. people of all cultural backgrounds, weren’t Jews. Gentile observers called them, “little Christs.”

    Tony Merida – Christ-centered Exposition – Exalting Jesus in Acts [p. 162]

As we observed last time these events took place around A.D. 40 just a few years after the resurrection of Jesus. But these are also tumultuous times for the Roman Empire ruling over a largely Greek-speaking world once ruled by Alexander the Great just three centuries earlier.

Conquering Roman leaders would march their captives into Rome and be worshiped as gods. These mere men likened themselves to the many idols of Rome and gods of ancient Greece and eastern lands where Jews were also led as captives centuries before.

“Only gods may choose new gods.

Claudius, as he refused the request of Alexandrian Greeks to dedicate a temple to his divinity
Claudius the by Robert Graves, author of I, Claudius

Tiberius Claudius Nero Caesar Drusus (1 August 10 BC–13 October 54), originally known as Tiberius Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus, was the fourth Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, ruling from 24 January 41 to his death in 54.source

    Claudius

On 24 January 41, Caligula was assassinated in a broad-based conspiracy involving Cassius Chaerea – a military tribune in the Praetorian Guard – and several senators..

The Senate quickly met and began debating a change of government, but this eventually devolved into an argument over which of them would be the new princeps. When they heard of the Praetorians’ claim, they demanded that Claudius be delivered to them for approval, but he refused, sensing the danger that would come with complying.

Source: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some historians, particularly Josephus, claim that Claudius was directed in his actions by the Judean King Herod Agrippa..

[Who we will meet later in Acts of the Apostles during upcoming missions of the Apostle Paul.]

Claudius was the first emperor proclaimed on the initiative of the Praetorian Guard instead of the Senate [of Rome]

    source [more below]

Claudius was concerned with the spread of eastern mysteries within the city and searched for more Roman replacements.. He expelled foreign astrologers, and at the same time rehabilitated the old Roman soothsayers (known as haruspices) as a replacement..

Claudius forbade proselytizing in any religion, even in those regions where he allowed natives to worship freely. [Freedom from {other} religion – sound familiar?}]

It is also reported that at one time he expelled the Jews from Rome. [SEE ACTS 18]

In the world you will have tribulation..

Claudius restored the status of the peaceful Imperial Roman provinces of Macedonia and Achaea as senatorial provinces.

Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. – Acts 11:1

“And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ – Acts 11:16

    Acts 11 continued

27 Now in those days, some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them named Agabus stood up and indicated by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine all over the world. And this took place in the reign of Claudius.

The bold prophesy of future desolation

Who has ever heard of this prophet?

And what brashness to predict some future disaster coming to all the inhabited world!

A POWERFUL prince may predict what disaster he will bring upon the lands he will invade or a lord of legions may cause the devastation of his own citizens, but who can say what the Lord God will do to the whole world?

And who would believe it anyway?

(What can mere mortal men do even knowing of such disasters yet to come?)

    Ἄγαβος? (Never heard of him.)

    Agabus is a Christian prophet.

Luke’s account of this prediction reveals the power behind Agabus’ prediction of famine is none other than the Holy Spirit of God, Who has already intervened with some frequency in Acts of the Apostles.

From their own history the Jews know that God will certainly do what he reveals through his prophets.

دانيال (Daniel) 5 :: Open New Arabic Version (NAV)

When Belshazzar tasted the wine, he said to bring the gold and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem.. They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.

Suddenly the fingers of a man’s hand came out and began writing opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace, and the king saw the back of the hand that did the writing.

.. Then Daniel was brought in before the king..

“This is the interpretation of the message: ‘MENĒ’—God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it.

    Daniel 5:2a,4-5,13a,26 LSB

Joseph – a similar prophecy from Scripture

Even though you may not know of Agabus you likely know the preparation of Egypt due to the prophesy of Joseph. The Church, too, will take Agabus at his word through the Spirit and prepare itself from the famine yet to come.

التكوين (Genesis) 41 :: Open New Arabic Version (NAV)

Now it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh had a dream.. And the ugly and [lean of flesh] thin cows ate up the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh awoke.

..seven ears of grain came up on a single stalk, plump and good. And behold, seven ears, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them.

And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, but no one can interpret it; yet I have heard it said about you, that you hear a dream and that you can interpret it.”

    Genesis 41:1a,4,5b-6,15

Joseph, Daniel, Agabus & the true Prophets of God

What is it that ALL these true Prophets of the Lord God have in common?

Daniel had reminded Belshazzar son of Nebuchadnezzar how the LORD had given his father power to rule.

“[lit. You king] O king, the Most High God granted the kingdom, grandeur, glory, and majesty to Nebuchadnezzar your father.

    Daniel 5:18 LSB

Joseph, Son of Israel (Jacob) gives Pharaoh a similar answer:

Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me; God will answer concerning the welfare of Pharaoh.”

    Genesis 41:16 LSB

The prophesies of the true prophet of God are neither self-serving nor words of their own AND the prophesy of the LORD will always take place as the Lord has revealed to his prophet.

Then Pharaoh named Joseph Zaphenath-paneah [the god speaks and he lives; treasury of the glorious rest; savior of the age]

    Genesis 41:45a; link above to Strong’s H6847

The hundreds of disciples of the risen Christ who had received the Holy Spirit all knew that the prophesy of Agabus would be fulfilled, just as prophesies of saviors of their past had come true.

    THEREFORE

Like Joseph, the disciples of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (whom some present had witnessed after the Lord’s resurrection) obediently prepared for their certain future.

And as any of the disciples had means, each of them determined to send a contribution for the service of the brothers living in Judea.

    Acts 11:29 LSB

Antioch - Crossroads of Christianity and map of 1sr c. AD Roman Empire
.. and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. Acts of the Apostles 11:25b NASB

These men and women joined in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit believed this prophesy of Agabus that a famine was about to come upon the whole Roman world. They must support the Apostles of Jesus and fellow followers of The Way in Jerusalem. For these men would be blamed more than most and persecuted as Christians have already suffered even more so in these days to come.

And as for their contribution for fellow saints in Judea:

And this they did, sending it in charge of Barnabas and Saul to the elders.

These are politically troubling times not only in Jerusalem but in Rome and throughout the Roman Empire.

King Herod (as we have just learned) is all caught up in the politics and religion issues with Claudius, Emperor and lord Caesar of the whole world; which, of course, includes Jerusalem.

    THE LORD GOD SPEAKS!

The Word of God, The Word of Man & The Work of the Holy Spirit

The entire Scripture of God is divided into two parts: commandments and promises.

    Martin Luther

    1. The Word of God

God is HOLY. The LORD God speaks, but to whom? The Word of God speaks to all creation and is revealed to man, in His own image the LORD created us.

So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

    Genesis 1:27

The LORD God created us to:

    • Love Him as God loves the world of His creation.

.. “Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness..”

    Genesis 1:26

Love Him with all your heart.

AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’

Mark 12:30 – answer of the Messiah Jesus to “What commandment is the foremost of all?”

“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

    Deuteronomy 10:12

    Do what the LORD commands

J.I Packer points out in KNOWING GOD, four categories of God’s direct utterances to mankind (Adam & Eve):

    1. command,
    2. testimony,
    3. prohibition with sanction appended,
    4. and promise both favorable and unfavorable (blessing or curse).

The LORD God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.

Out of the ground the LORD God caused every tree to grow that is pleasing to the sight and good for food..

    Genesis 2:8-9a
    • .. the tree of life was also in the midst of the garden,
    • and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

but do what He would do; that is, to do good.

NOW where will we find the truth of good and evil?

Have we considered these truths from the Bible?

    You are good and You do good;
    Teach me Your statutes

    Psalm 119:68

OR from the hissing of those who oppose the Lord?

Keeping in mind those categories just mentioned from KNOWING GOD,’ may I again remind us and suggest the ONLY answer:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

    2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV

    2. The Word of a Man of God

Moses recorded the LAW as SPOKEN by the LORD.

YOU may have imagined that the LORD spoke to you in Paradise or walked with you in your daily life. Before SIN, we knew what was good because God spoke to us face to face.

So how does a man know what God said now that man has been separated from the Holy Presence of the LORD?

    Moses holding up ten Commandments

    וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל־מֹשֶׁה אֶֽהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶֽהְיֶה וַיֹּאמֶר כֹּה תֹאמַר לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶֽהְיֶה שְׁלָחַנִי אֲלֵיכֶֽם׃

    And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”;

and He said, “This is what you shall say

to the sons of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

    Exodus 3:14 – I AM – YHWH, rendered LORD, which is derived from the verb HAYAH, to be;
H834 matches the Hebrew אֲשֶׁר (‘ăšer), who, which, what, that; also (as an adverb and a conjunction) when, where, how, because, in order that, etc.:

Yᵊhōvâ (I AM THAT I AM) Y H W H the existing ONE whose NAME IS too Holy to be spoken – יְהֹוָה

Do you believe the Law of Moses?

“For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

John 5:46-47 NASB20 – a question of the Messiah Jesus

Authority of the Word after the Law

Besides Eden witnessed in the first book of Moses, I could also reintroduce you to the LORD in an awesome place above the heavens and earth in a place such as that revealed to the Apostle John by the risen and victorious Christ Jesus!

Witness from the Prophets like Elijah, Ezekiel and Daniel where the God brings created beings such as us, beneath the glorious Throne of the Almighty Lord God! And the LORD confirms His Word to men of flesh, Prophets who served Him faithfully on the earth.

Now Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and He let none of his words fail. .. And the LORD appeared again at Shiloh, because the LORD revealed Himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the LORD.

    1 Samuel 3:19,21

David and others record personal conversations, leadings of the Lord and prayers and songs worshiping God.

Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the LORD had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

    2 Chronicles 3:1

On occasions before and after David and after the resurrection of Jesus, man has received the Words of God and recorded them in Scripture.

Do you believe these men to whom God speaks?

    3. Breathed out by the Holy Spirit

and the Spirit of God moved above the face of the waters Genesis 1:26 picture of sun over clouds
And the earth was a formless and desolate emptiness, and darkness was over the surface of the deep..

    Bereishit (Genesis) 1:2 Masoretic text
    • The earth was a formless, desolate emptiness, complete darkness, a deep void lifeless and separate from God.
    • And the SPRIRT OF GOD — the Other and ONLY LIFE separated from lifelessness and nothingness — Created!

God is HOLY! (Other.. Separate from HIS creation, even man.)

SO HOW does the Lord God communicate with MAN?

    The Holy Spirit

    THE LORD GOD IS OTHER!

(God is not a man. Unlike man He was not created — GOD IS that HE IS.

    • Not like man and beast, not like plant or planet, not like the heavens which were void or the earth which was not yet.

“God is not a man, that He would lie,
    Nor a son of man, that He would change His mind;
Has He said, and will He not do it?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good

    Numbers 23:19

    God Speaks. A Man hears.

Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not remain with man forever, because he is also flesh; nevertheless his days shall be 120 years.”

    Genesis 6:3 – Moses records God’s words – בְּרֵאשִׁית

And since the days of Moses, the Holy Spirit of God commands certain men to record God’s HOLY WORD as SCRIPTURE.

(Write it down and tell other men what GOD HAS SAID.)

    Spirit-filled men

Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him; and He took away some of the Spirit who was upon him and placed Him upon the seventy elders. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. Yet they did not do it again

Numbers 11:25 – the LORD gives the Holy Spirit to 70 elders of the Hebrews

Scripture records when God speaks to a Man given the Holy Spirit

Scripture reveals the words of the LORD which He spoke to Moses and recorded in the first five books of the Bible. Joshua, various Judges and scribes, David and various kings, several prophets before Christ and Apostles after our Lord Jesus Christ ALL confirm the spoken and written HOLY Word of God we collectively refer to as The HOLY BIBLE.

“I and the Father are one.”

    gospel of John 10:30

Jesus Christ He Himself Other — testifies by the Holy Spirit to the truth of Scripture with the Authority of God the Father in ways no man could.

    Gospel of Luke 3:

21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened,

and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well pleased.”

    SUMMARY: GOD SPEAKS

Therefore, the DOCTRINE of the THE HOLY BIBLE teaches that SCRIPTURE IS:

    1. The Word of God
    2. Written by a Man of God and
    3. Breathed out by the Holy Spirit of God

All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness

    2 Timothy 3:16

DOCTRINE is teaching (for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness IF we choose its Truth.) Where will you find absolute truth, if not in the Holy Bible?

How much of the BIBLE must we believe?

We will begin to address this in my next post on DOCTRINE.
    To be continued..

Please COMMENT or ask your question about this Doctrine.

Thank you, dear saint of our Lord Jesus Christ.
