The Revelation of Jesus Christ to John

  • The Pervasiveness of Sin

    The Pervasiveness of Sin

If you perceive the pervasiveness of sin,

you will pour forth great gratitude for God’s grace

    and the cross of Christ.

Revelation 18:  For your merchants were the greatest in the world,
and you deceived the nations with your sorceries.
24 In your streets flowed the blood of the prophets and of God’s holy people
and the blood of people slaughtered all over the world.”

… all the nations were deceived by your sorcery.

So warns Christ’s Revelation to John of Babylon, a home for demons – the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit. Even Ezekiel had warned Jerusalem of these same evils (perhaps appropriate warning to a 21st c. church).

3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

    Disclaimer & Caution

Researching the Revelation of Jesus Christ to John reconfirms a need for a note of caution to the reader.

MUCH false teaching, speculative interpretation and agenda-driven preaching will easily mislead and confuse most believers, except believers well-versed scripturally in apologetics. Perhaps one of the greatest dangers is to accept an interpretation of just one man on the many important symbols John presents in Revelation – especially in the following chapters.

The following is a continuation in my series on Revelation, begun with the Letters to the Seven Churches and now continuing from much later in John’s apocalypse in Chapter 17.

May I suggest that you take my interpretation of scripture (or anyone’s interpretation) under consideration of:

    • the Holy Spirit
    • Scripture (including, possibly root meanings of the Greek or Hebrew)
    • prayerful consideration of application to your life and those in your life

Revelation is misunderstood and much misrepresented. Will the deception of these last days not increase with the pervasiveness of sin?

    BABYLON, the Harlot Queen,

sits upon the scarlet beast –

Revelation 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon The Great, The Mother Of Harlots And Abominations Of The Earth.

    SIN is pervasive!

Revelation begins with warning to the churches. Should the churches of these last days not heed the warnings of a time so near?

The Apostle John describes Heavenly visions (none of which I will describe today):

    • The Scroll and Seven Seals (ch. 4-7)
    • Seven Angels with Seven Trumpets (ch. 8-11)
    • Seven Symbolic Histories (ch. 12-14)
    • Seven Bowls of God’s Wrath (ch. 15-16)

All of this leads up to the drama of punishment, with its great symbolism. All of Revelation leads to a drama:

    CENTERED ON EVIL vs. GOOD

    SATAN vs. CHRIST JESUS.

Though the FINAL BATTLE does not take place until Revelation 19, the familiar opponents of God confront the believer and unbeliever alike with the great symbolism of Revelation 17 and 18. What Jesus reveals is what our Lord has always revealed to those with ears to hear.

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

Signs of the End of the Age

3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray.

6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.

9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another.

egypt-violence-eu11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come…

wolf23 Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.

24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

    Do NOT be deceived:

    1 Corinthians 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality {note: The two Greek terms translated by this phrase refer to the passive and active partners in consensual homosexual acts.}

2 Timothy 2:12-13 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

1 John 2:26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.

Do you with ears to hear understand how the world is being deceived?

Do you sip from the cup of the Harlot?

Hear and understand the wine of her cup.

… all the nations were deceived by her ‘pharmakeia’ sorcery.

Heed the warning of the punishment for those who partake of the sorcery of the Harlot:

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, G5332 and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Let us continue to proclaim Christ crucified; for He IS and He will return in victory over Satan, the Harlot, and all the armies of evil which surround the believer every day.

We have Great Grace in Christ Jesus and His Blood of the Cross, where by His death and resurrection we are victorious over sin and death.

Christ Jesus our Lord has defeated the enemy. These last days will end and the faithful will be most thankful for the grace of the Cross.

  • Got a minute? – 6

    Got a minute? – 6

If the Lord speaks to you, as in the days of your fathers, do not resist Him; but give Him the glory that is due to the One who has made you.

Got a minute for the Lord?

He has given us sixty minutes in every hour, more than a thousand in each day, and more than five hundred thousand in each of our years.

Got a minute for the Lord?  We have wasted millions of minutes on the ways of the world.

Though we would claim Christ, we hardly have a minute for Him six days each week.

Though we may be born again in the Spirit, we backslide to follow the voice of the deceiver and do not heed the urging of the Spirit of righteousness.

Take a minute to hear the Lord:

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”

    Deuteronomy 6:5 & Matthew 22:27

    – Jesus calling this the ‘greatest commandment!  And if you have a minute to hear our Lord, Jesus Christ…  “God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” [John 4:24]

Got a minute to be in communion with God, your spirit with the Holy Spirit, in truth…  have you got a minute for God?  Got a minute for Jesus?  Hear the words of our Lord:

“I am the bread of life.” [John 6:48]

Before Abraham was, I AM. [John 8:58b]

“I am the door.  If anyone enters by me, he will be saved… [John 10:9a]

“I am the good shepherd.” [John 10:11a]

“I and My Father are One.” [John 10:30]

I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.  And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.  Do you believe this?” [John 11:25b-26]

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” [Revelation 22:13]

“Watch, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.” [Matthew 25:13]

Got a minute?  “Surely I am coming quickly.” [Rev. 22:20b]

The Time Is Near For Our Church – Laodicea

Yet more sand flows through the neck of the hourglass.

Six churches called to faithfulness – that their lampstand may not be removed.

Nearly two thousand years – grain by grain – the sand draws through the hourglass into the abyss of eternal time.

    The Revelation of Jesus Christ

    Greeting to the Seven Churches

1:4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, andthe ruler of kings on earth.

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail[c] on account of him. Even so. Amen.

8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Vision of the Son of Man

9 I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet11 saying,

“Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”

12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying,

“Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades…

Before any more time trickles away from us, let us be clear that our twenty-first century IMAGE of the CHURCH is not Biblical.

The Church: though identifiable by location, by continent, by symbolism and by many other pictures; is NOT the “church” to whom the risen Christ Jesus speaks.

Jesus is not a statue or building or grande idea; He IS God our Creator and Savior. His CHURCH is ALL of His saints and followers of the Way (as Christians were called in the First Century).

Each warning to the seven churches has been a personal letter written to a practicing group of saints in a specific city and circumstance.

Our own church and personal circumstance is of no less importance to our Lord.

    To the Church in Laodicea

14 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation.

15 “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot!

A scathing indictment of christians who show up at a building for just an hour a week (most weeks), give a little money and go out into the world claiming the Name ‘christian.’

16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

    • Our church buildings testify against us: We are rich. We preach prosperity. We need nothing.
    • Jesus says: We are wretched. We are pitiable. We are poor. We are blind. And before the Lord, our God — we stand naked in our sin.

Most Christians are not HOT for Christ, burning with the desire to witness the Gospel and BE the CHURCH.  In fact, even if the worship and the music and the fellowship seem HOT for Jesus; in fact, once the hour in the hourglass of their Sunday morning obligation has past, most grow COLD for Christ before they cross the threshold of their very nice home.

We may sing of Amazing Grace. We may think of others as ‘the wretch,’ when in fact our hearts are hardened stone-cold against the repentance of our continuing sin. We pitiably rejoice and celebrate the ‘cheap grace’ of this hour. We are poor. We are blind. We are warm for a moment. We are less than warm as the sands drain into the abyss of the hourglass.

18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.

Are you ashamed of the nakedness of your continued sin, dear brother? Dear sister, do you stand before Jesus unable to hide your seduction to sin?

Repent, dear believer, that the Lord might not remove the golden lampstand from the lukewarm wick of your witness.

19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.

20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock.

Our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus – Who Was and IS and IS to come once more on the clouds for His faithful Bride, HIS CHURCH – exhorts and encourages the seven churches.

Jesus spoke though the Apostle John to seven churches — to your church.

Christ Jesus speaks His words of Revelation to YOU! (Also to me.)

If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

21 The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

    Even so, come Lord Jesus.

    Revelation 22

10 And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near.11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.”

12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
