  • What do I do with this?

What do I do with this?

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

    2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV

Daily we must remind ourselves that God IS. Daily we must recall that Jesus not only died on the cross for our sins (and oh so many of them), but that Christ rose from death in the body and spirit and Christ Jesus IS. Daily we must seek relationship between our living spirit breathed into us by God with the Holy Spirit sent to us as our counselor by Jesus. The Holy Spirit of the Living God near to our soul, IS.

All of this seems well and good as we carry our Bibles into a worship service or open the Bible in the privacy of our homes. Yet once we return from worship or Bible study we encounter the woes and trials of everyday life, the challenges of everyday relationships.

Don’t we ever-so-briefly ask of our Bible verses and stories: “What do I do with this?”

Bible“All Scripture is God-breathed” or “All Scripture is breathed out by God.” or “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God.”

We know it. God said it. But what do we do with it?

Think of our everyday life as a brief journey to a place of which we have only dreamed.

How do I get there? (I don’t even truly know where I am now?)

I know God wants me in a different place today than where I failed so miserably in sin yesterday. I am lost and have no GPS. In fact, once I leave church or the security of home (though I know this place is a brief shelter for this breathing, decaying flesh of mine), I not only have not sense of God’s direction, I can not even find weak signal of God’s voice speaking direction into my daily life.

    Genesis 12:

ur to haran to caanan mapNow the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

Just suppose you have retired comfortably in your hometown or near to your family and making an amazing promise, GOD asks you to just pick up and move. Will you go?

I have little understanding of Abram and his lifestyle millennia ago. Yet what same application do I see to my own life when it seems everything must change from how I have always seen my life?

Everything must go forward in some new direction. How do I get there? Who will help me along the way? What will I find in this new place? I am blind to any knowledge of the challenges ahead, the place where I will go and what I will do when I get there. (And what does Abram have to do with me in this fast-paced life even two millennia after the Cross of Christ?)

Again scripture provides an answer and encourages us to apply scripture to our every day life.

Galatians 3:4-6  Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.

Sure, I can teach someone scripture or sit under some teaching to the church which I like; but can I apply to the lesson of my life the Voice of the Lord’s Spoken Word?

If God asks me to leave everything behind for the unseen promise of hope, will I have the faith of Abraham to hear and obey the voice of the LORD?

How many times has the LORD asked you to do something after you were in the comfortable place?

Or again, how many times have your own misguided plans brought you to your knees before the LORD asking, ‘Where did I go wrong? What do I do now… Lord? Where do I go with this? Show me the way… please… Lord?’

And ALL is silent… No answer. And again we cry out to the LORD.

And the Lord is faithful in His answer. Yet we do not like it. It is not the ‘comfort’ we expected. In fact, it makes us even more uncomfortable and will require even more faith than we believe possible – faith to ‘believe God’ and have it counted as righteousness.

What next? (Isn’t that always the question from the comfortable place or the house of desperation?) What next, Lord?

    To be continued…

  • On Earth, As It Is In Heaven

On Earth, As It Is In Heaven

    You know the words:

“…Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven…” in the olde King James Version of the Bible.

This is Jesus’ prayer of how to address GOD in prayer.

‘Thy will be done on earth.’ (This is my prayer.)

Fear God! Yes, certainly. For God is our Creator. God IS. God is powerful.

Yet IF you are a humble servant of the Living God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, you have a relationship – a relationship that crosses the line of His Holiness in communication.

Communication of a child of God to our Father in heaven is prayer.

Have you talked with your Father in heaven today?

You cannot be two places at once. You cannot be ‘in heaven’ while your words are ‘in earth.’ Yet we live here… on earth. The heavens and God seem so distant, so vast, so unfathomable.

We cannot comprehend a God who IS, let alone a God who will listen to us as a father listens to his child. We cannot begin to imagine how Almighty God can love us… how Almighty God does love me… how God our Father wants me to pray and communicate my every heartfelt need and desire.

(Father, this is what I want. Is it what YOU want?)

We cannot imagine how overflowing God’s love is for those who love His Only Son, Christ Jesus, who IS the very love of God sacrificed for us.

We cannot imagine a heaven so filled with the love of God from an earth so filled with hatred until we feel the embrace of God’s love given to us by Jesus.

What is God’s will for a child of His family? What is God’s will for a follower of His Son, Christ Jesus?

The measure of God’s will for our lives is found throughout Scripture.

The Holy Bible separates Christians to God’s Holy will (on earth, as it is in heaven).

Did you READ God’s will for you in your Bible today? Did you pray about what you have read? Do you pray? Do you listen to God… to His will and His answer through Scripture?

In an earlier post: A Love Letter from John, I emphasized the love of God for us as expressed in 1 John. Turning to the Gospel of John, hear of God’s love and will for us directly from Jesus Christ.

    John 14
    English Standard Version (ESV)
I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me… 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me…

13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Because I live, you also will live.

20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words…”

Do you pray: THY will be done (on earth, too)?

Do you even pray at all to the Living God?

OR do you think: I will not keep Jesus’ words.

OR in NOT thinking about Jesus & His words is it now time to REPENT?

May HIS will be done on earth (and in your heart), as it is in heaven.

Your Word Is a Lamp to My Feet

    Sin and Shin [Schin]

161 Princes persecute me without cause,
but my heart stands in awe of your words.

Consider for a moment, authority; both legitimate and illegitimate. Government: leaders and those with power over other people. Explanation of “Princes,” used here holds complexity that could include many men and women of the world of many positions even in this day.

    שַׂר – sar –

prince, ruler, leader, chief, chieftain, official, captain

from the root: From שָׂרַר (H8323)

    1. chieftain, leader
    2. vassal, noble, official (under king)
    3. captain, general, commander (military)
    4. chief, head, overseer (of other official classes)
    5. heads, princes (of religious office)
    6. elders (of representative leaders of people)
    7. merchant-princes (of rank and dignity)
    8. patron-angel
    9. Ruler of rulers (of God)
    10. warden

Consider how many rule (lord it over) other men. What is the basis of their authority?

Is it God, our Creator and LORD of all? Or have they no legitimate cause to lord it over anyone, least of all a righteous man?

Further, consider the humility by which for your sin a righteous man would give the Princes and powers the authority to hang above His crucified body a sign proclaiming Him:

    Jesus, King of the Jews

162 I rejoice at your word
like one who finds great spoil.
163 I hate and abhor falsehood,
    but I love your law.

Surly the Princes are liars! Leaders who lie in wait to snare the righteous that they might reap the spoil of their meager wages.

The Lord God will avenge the faithful, those who love His law.

164 Seven times a day I praise you
    for your righteous rules.
    165 Great peace have those who love your law;
    nothing can make them stumble.

Ezekiel 3:20 Again, if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits injustice, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die.

The Hand of God shall place before the evil ones the stumbling block of their fall and the snare of their demise.

166 I hope for your salvation, O Lord,
    and I do your commandments.

    Yĕhovah sabar  yĕshuw`ah

KJV – LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation

    167 My soul keeps your testimonies;
    I love them exceedingly.
168 I keep your precepts and testimonies,
for all my ways are before you.
