Stephen, Dynamic Preacher of God’s Word

We return now to Jerusalem in c.A.D.30, from where Luke left us with the Apostles' appointing seven men to help minister to the needs of a growing Church. Today we begin with a look at this first named deacon, Stephen.

The word [from the Apostles] found approval with the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and [six other men].

    Acts 6:5 NASB20

Stephen, a man full of faith

The multitudes of the growing church elect seven men to help the Twelve with administration of some daily duties of the church which have begun to cause complaint. Number one on their list: Stephen.

    ACTS of the Apostles 6:

    ACTS STEPHANOS of Stephen

So the word of God spread, the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly in number, and a large group of priests became obedient to the faith.

Acts of the Apostles 6:7 CSB

Now, Nineteen (not just the Twelve) Preach the Gospel in Jerusalem

Luke has witnessed the power of the Holy Spirit moving in Christ’s saints in Jerusalem, along with accompanying signs from God. Multitudes now join the fellowship of believers led by Peter and John, all the Apostles and now seven more saints determined to preach Christ crucified and risen from the grave.

Some perhaps, (in addition to the Twelve) may have witnessed the Lord Jesus as one of the more than five-hundred who saw Jesus with their own eyes after His resurrection.

The new congregation of believers encounter opposition from the established rulers of Jerusalem already determined to snuff out the burning new zeal of those who have believed in Jesus by the witness of the Apostles. (Perhaps these will be less likely to oppose the authority of Jerusalem’s official judgment than their outspoken uneducated teachers Peter and John, who had escaped imprisonment prior to trial.)

Stephen, full of grace and power

But what happens within their walls of Jerusalem?

Now Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people.

Acts of the Apostles 6:8 CSB
.. great wonders and miracles among the people.

First, Simon Peter and John, preaching in the courtyards of our Temple with a man healed from life-long lameness.

(We had to release them or the multitudes would have turned on us!)

But now, MORE signs — NOT through twelve Apostles of Jesus, but a NEW disciple of His Disciples!

And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people.

Acts of the Apostles 6:8 NASB20

Who is this new disciple of the former rabbi Jesus?

Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

These freedmen were also Jews caught up in the disputes of Hellenism, as had led to the call of their Greek brother Stephanos.

The Synagogue of the Freedmen included men who had been made captives of the Romans under Pompey but were afterwards set free; and who although they had fixed their abode in Rome, had built at their own expense a synagogue at Jerusalem which they frequented when in that city - Source

More than murmuring, False Witness against Stephen

10 But they were unable to cope with his wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking. Then they secretly induced men to say,

“We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”

Acts 6:11b – false witness against Stephanos by some men of the libertinus

Why would liberated Jews (with their own synagogues) oppose these new rabbis?

    • the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including
      • both Cyrenians
        • a large and very flourishing city of Libya Cyrenaica or Pentapolitana, about 11 miles (17 km) from the sea. Among its inhabitants were a great number of Jews, whom Ptolemy I. had brought there, and invested with the right of [Roman] citizens
      • and Alexandrians,
        • Ἀλεξανδρεύς Alexandria in Egypt
      • and some from Cilicia

      • and Asia,
        • Ἀσία i.e. Asia Minor, or (usually) only its western shore:—Asia – proconsular Asia embracing Mysia, Lydia, Phrygia, and Caria, corresponding closely to Turkey today

These Hellenized Roman Jews competed with rabbis of other Jewish sects for influence in Jerusalem.

    Speaking of murmuring..

12 They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; so they came, seized him, and took him to the Sanhedrin.

Πέτρος First Petrus and now this Στέφανος Stephanos

13 They also presented false witnesses..

This strategy of an alliance between the libertines and more orthodox Jews against Jesus had worked before Pilate just a few months ago.

.. for we have heard him say that this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses handed down to us.”

ACTS of false witness against Stephen by the Freedmen 6:14 NASB

    στέφανος Stephen

    στέφανος stéphanos, stef'-an-os;
    from an apparently primary στέφω stéphō (to twine or wreathe);
     a chaplet (as a badge of royalty, a prize in the public games or a symbol of honor generally;
but more conspicuous and elaborate than the simple fillet, G1238),
    literally or figuratively:—crown.

Stephen is about to become the angelic crown of witness to the first century church.

    To be continued…

  • The Gospel: Preached by Stephen

    The Gospel: Preached by Stephen

Acts 6: Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number…

The multitudes were now part of the way and living as disciples of the risen Christ Jesus. The twelve Apostles (with Mathias appointed to replace Judas) need the help of others. They appointed deacons – seven more men fully filled with the Holy Spirit to serve as additional leaders.

… and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,

and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. 6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.

7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.

When God multiplies the numbers and faith of believers, without fail opposition to God will test the faith of believers. The truth of our witness by the Spirit will convert the enemies of Christ to trust in His overflowing love.

9 Then some … rose up and disputed with Stephen. 10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.

11 Then they secretly instigated men…  12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, 13 and they set up false witnesses…

15 And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

Filled with the Power of the Holy Spirit, Stephen now preaches to his false accusers the gospel of Christ Jesus.
     Acts 7

ur to haran to caanan map “Brothers and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 3 and said to him, ‘Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.’ 4 Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran.

And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living. 5 Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.

goshen and egypt map6 And God spoke to this effect—that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years.

Israel, the Hebrew people, chosen by God, were proud of their heritage through Abraham.

Again, remember that Joseph, son of Israel (Jacob) became a savior to his people by bringing them into Goshen of Egypt as sojourners.

Stephen continues with Joseph’s story and their history in Egypt, which every Jew knew so well from scripture:

17 “But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt 18 until there arose over Egypt another king who did not know Joseph. 19 He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, so that they would not be kept alive.

20 At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God’s sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father’s house, 21 and when he was exposed, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. 22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.

hebrew brick makers23 “When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel. 24 And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian.

God used Moses to save Israel. God gave the Hebrew people the Law through Moses. These are the first five book of Scripture.

Moses, even more than David, is revered by the Jews. Yet hear what Stephen points out about the relationship of the Hebrews to Moses and scripture from Moses to point to this parallel to Christ Jesus.

35 “This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.

37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’

41 … And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands. 42 But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven…

44 “Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness… 45 Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua…

… So it was until the days of David, 46 who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.

solomon's temple47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.

48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,

    49 “‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,
or what is the place of my rest?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’

Yes, we are proud of our great houses of worship, aren’t we?

So were the Jews of the first century proud of the Temple Herod built, the Temple where they worshiped Abraham and worshiped Moses and worshiped David and worshiped their long-established traditions…

    Are we so different?

Yet Stephen, by the Power of the Holy Spirit, quotes scripture reminding us that GOD is the Creator and has no need of any house of other provision of man. (This is from the Prophet Isaiah.)

Steven then reminds his accusers, who have rejected Christ Jesus, of their sordid history of opposing the will of God:

51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit.

As your fathers did, so do you.

52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute?

And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”

Are you so caught up in ‘church’ that you forget Jesus?

Can you be so stiff-necked and uncircumcised in your heart and ears that you resist the gospel of the Holy Spirit being preached from the pulpit and written before you in a dust-covered Bible?

Could you be just as one who stood by while Stephen preached the gospel?

    What must YOU do?

REPENT! and be changed permanently by the Name of Jesus Christ.

Do not resist the Holy Spirit.

You with ears to hear and eyes to see Scripture, hear and see the Gospel.

  • Covenant and Truth – 5

    Covenant and Truth – 5

I prefer the company of a confessed sinner to that of an unconfessed christian hypocrite.

No witness is more damaging to the church than the loud christian proclamation of a hypocrite. The world hates true followers of Christ and the church, but unbelievers use these self-appointed self-righteous spokesmen for the faith as excuse to continue their attacks against Christ.

Consider that since God has humbled Himself to come to us as a Son of Man in Christ Jesus, man must worship God in all humility. A hypocrite lifts him self or her self up for the witness of others, rather than bowing down to God and bowing down to the will of Christ Jesus as their Lord.

The word ‘Lord‘ is used 7,836 times in the KJV of the Bible. It must be key to our humility to bow down and submit to someone else: God our Father, Jesus Christ, Pastor of our church, a wife to her husband, a worker to his boss. A hypocrite fails in these, pridefully claiming to follow while following none but their own passions and ways.

In fact, Jesus hated the damage hypocrites do to the honor and reputation of God. Jesus spoke the truth of judgment against the hypocrites. To the crowds and multitudes who followed Him to hear His preaching, but did not show the fruit of repentance Jesus exhorted:

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? – Luke 6:46

It is Master to slave or servant relationship.

Followers of Jesus are slaves committed to do what Christ commands.

Do you realize that Jesus said: ” whoever would be first among you must be slave of all,” beloved Christian servant (doulos)?

A hypocrite does not live to serve, but seeks to be served, even by God!

This was the position of those Jesus called hypocrites. He challenged their authority and motives; not by His own authority, but by the uncovering of the nakedness of the many sins of their constant hypocrisy.

    Matthew 23

    New King James Version (NKJV)

Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, 2 saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.

The distinguishing mark of a hypocrite: “…for they say, and do not do.”

In fact, the hypocrite will say it for you, but will not do what they tell you.

13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.’ 17 Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

18 And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it.

19 Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

Jesus is asking about the truth of purpose of the sacrifice to God. The altar is nothing, says the Lord; but the sacrifice to God is everything. And note Jesus’ instruction that we MUST PERFORM it. We must bear the fruit of our sacrifice in humility before God.

Just because we swear by the place of God (or call ourself ‘christian’) does not mean that God will accept our sacrifice.  (Remember the sacrifice of Cain?)

20 Therefore he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it. 21 He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it. 22 And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.

23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.

27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’

31 “Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt. 33 Serpents, brood of vipers!

How can you escape the condemnation of hell?

So you claim to be a christian, but will not do?

Then you will not obey Jesus Christ, as your Lord.

Are YOU a christian Pharisee?  It is not a new problem for the church.

Acts 6:8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people… 11 Then they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”

Acts 7:51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”

Paul writes to Timothy warnings to be aware of those who will come into the church with false messages – a gospel of hypocrisy.

Look around you at 21st century ‘christians’ and see truth in these cautions:

    Godlessness in the Last Days

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.

raised handsDoes your ‘witness’ to the world ‘have the appearance of godliness?’

Do you  ‘praise the lord’ in the holy place and kneel down only in church, while you bow only your head and fail to bow down your heart to the Lord?

    Hypocrite!

And what are the instructions to the church for those who come among us CLAIMING worship, but false christians refusing to do what Jesus commands as our Lord? Paul’s letter to Timothy and the church continues:

    Avoid such people.

6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.

Later in his letter to Timothy Paul warns of another hypocrite who has turned from the true following of Christ:

    Preach the Word

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhortwith complete patience and teaching.

The faith of a humble servant of Christ Jesus is an active faith.

3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry…

14 Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them!

Are you aware of the hypocrites who claim to be christians who are part of Christ’s church? Are you, perhaps in some way, one of them?

Examine your own heart (for Jesus cautions that our righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees).  Reprove, rebuke, and exhort your brother in Christ (or your sister in Christ, beloved sister in the Lord), with complete patience and teaching.

Let us make certain: in our marriages, in our families, in our workplaces and in the marketplaces of the city that we are not among those who witness against our Lord.

    Matthew 7

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits…

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Truth! Required by the Lord of His servants, His church.  Beware, dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, of hypocrites among us.

A hypocrite fails to yield the fruit of truth.
