    Taw [Tau]

    169 Let my cry come before you, O Lord;
    give me understanding according to your word!

    KJV Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD:

    give me understanding according to thy word.

    Is this not the very heart of prayer before God?

    Is this not our very need to understand God through Scripture?

    170 Let my plea come before you;
    deliver me according to your word.
    171 My lips will pour forth praise,
    for you teach me your statutes.
    172 My tongue will sing of your word,
    for all your commandments are right.

    173 Let your hand be ready to help me,
    for I have chosen your precepts.
    174 I long for your salvation, O Lord,
    and your law is my delight.

    Though the Lord chooses us to be His, even by adoption, He does not coerce us to follow Him.  As Adam, we may choose obedience or choose sin.

    As Christ Jesus, the new adam, a second son of man who was before the first; He does not coerce our Christian life, either; though He laid down His Life for our sin.

    Choose Jesus as Lord or choose death and punishment for your sins.

    175 Let my soul live and praise you,
    and let your rules help me.

    Genesis 2:7 KJV And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soulH5315

    1 Chronicles 29:13 KJV Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise H1984 thy glorious name.

    Jeremiah 20:13 KJV Sing unto the LORD, praise H1984 ye the LORD: for he hath delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.

    176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant,
    for I do not forget your commandments.

    Isaiah quotes this last verse of Psalm 119 in prophesying the coming of our Savior, the Good Shepherd.

    Look upon the Cross of our Savior and upon your own sin.

    Isaiah 53:

    6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
    and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

    7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    yet he opened not his mouth;
    like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
    8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, who considered
    that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
    9 And they made his grave with the wicked
    and with a rich man in his death,
    although he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

    10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;
    when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
    the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
    11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
    by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
    make many to be accounted righteous,
    and he shall bear their iniquities.

    And be also comforted by the last verse of the Psalmist; for our Lord, Christ Jesus also quoted it, and He knows well your soul.

    Matthew 18: 12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.

    PSALM 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
    and a light to my path.

    It is the signature verse of Psalm 119, the central theme of importance to the Psalmist.

    God’s word. More than words – actions of man directed by God – a way of life.

    The Proverbs advise of God’s word:

    • 1:23b  I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
    • 4:4b Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
    • 4:20b attend to my words
    • 13:13 Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

    How are God’s words a lamp (as translated from the KJV)?

    In the Tabernacle of God, Moses was commanded by the LORD:

    Contributions for the Sanctuary

    The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel, that they take for me a contribution. From every man whose heart moves him you shall receive the contribution for me…

    8 And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst…

    16 And you shall put into the ark the testimony that I shall give you.  17 “You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold…

    22 There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel…

    31 “You shall make a lampstand of pure gold…

    37 You shall make seven lamps for it. And the lamps shall be set up so as to give light on the space in front of it.

    The seven lamps on the lampstand light the sacred Tabernacle of the Lord, the place where the High Priest meets with the LORD, the commands are given and oaths sworn on behalf of the people to obey the LORD.

    106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it,
    to keep your righteous rules.
    107 I am severely afflicted;
    give me life, O Lord, according to your word!
    108 Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord,
    and teach me your rules.

    The KJV demonstrates more reverence for the Lord’s sanctuary and presence by the words of v.108

    Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments.

    109 I hold my life in my hand continually,
    but I do not forget your law.

    110 The wicked have laid a snare for me,
    but I do not stray from your precepts.
    111 Your testimonies are my heritage forever,
    for they are the joy of my heart.

    Returning to the KJV: Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

    And use of the same Hebrew word in Exodus 25:21-22

    And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony H5715 that I shall give thee. And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, H5715 of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

    112 I incline my heart to perform your statutes
    forever, to the end.

    This is what it means to love the Lord your God with your whole heart.

  • Aleph

    Aleph

    Psalm 119
    English Standard Version (ESV)
    Your Word Is a Lamp to My Feet

    NOTE: This psalm is an acrostic poem of twenty-two stanzas, following the letters of the Hebrew alphabet; within a stanza, each verse begins with the same Hebrew letter.

    אָשַׁר –

    from the root: אָשַׁר – a verb meaning to go straight, walk, go on, advance, make progress

    Aleph

    119  Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
    who walk in the law of the Lord!
    2 Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,
    who seek him with their whole heart,
    3 who also do no wrong,
    but walk in his ways!
    4 You have commanded your precepts
    to be kept diligently.
    5 Oh that my ways may be steadfast
    in keeping your statutes!
    6 Then I shall not be put to shame,
    having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.
    7 I will praise you with an upright heart,
    when I learn your righteous rules.
    8 I will keep your statutes;
    do not utterly forsake me!

    • Is your way blameless? Do you walk with integrity?

    My way has not always been blameless. I have sometimes wandered from the narrow way of Christ Jesus and had no resemblance to our Lord.

    Matthew 7:13-14  “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

    I’ve  broken His Law in my heart and transgressed the Commandment of His will.

    “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

    The testimony of my life, my marriage and my work is NOT the witness of a Christian, though I seek Christ Jesus with my whole heart.  I do what I do not want to do and do not do what the Lord wants me to do (like Paul {Romans 7:15}).

    I am shamed by what I am and what I have done, even in the house of the Lord!

    I praise you, Lord Jesus.

    Do not utterly forsake me (as many whom I love in your Name have forgotten your servant and reject Your love through my heart with trepidation and unforgiveness).
