The Time Is Near For Our Church – Sardis

    The Revelation of Jesus Christ

    John to the seven churches

Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth.

“Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, … to Sardis

“Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. 19 Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this.

20 As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

Christ, our risen Lord and Savior holds in His right hand the angels of the churches. Christ, our returning Lord and Savior stands in the presence of His golden churches – the believers to be taken-up along with those who have gone before us.

Yet each letter to the churches is specific to a group of believers: praise for faithfulness and call to continued faith. For not all who say, “Lord, lord,” will be taken-up. Not all who say, “Lord, lord,” will stand as a light of witness as a lampstand on His right. For some will be separated to the King’s left and He will say of those who did not glimmer with the light of Jesus, “I never knew you.”

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. – Matthew 25:46 KJV

Therefore: The warnings for the seven churches are addressed to the saints of every generation until the last.

You with ears to hear, let the scripture of Revelation speak to your eternal soul.

Revelation 3 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

Now here is a short letter to our MEGA-CHURCH.  It’s only six verses (including the introduction above and the “let him hear…” closing).

We know ALL the things you do to witness your faith, so you don’t have anything to concern yourselves with in this short letter. “But wait,” as the commercial says (NO, not the commercial or billboard for your church, but another one), “there’s more.” Better not turn the page from Seeker-friendly Sardis too soon.

“‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

2 Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.

THOUSANDS attend our church and MILLIONS WATCH our church broadcast EVERY WEEK from their La-Z-Boys at home.

We have done everything we could think of to get more viewers and take our gospel into all of the world. Do you mean to say that our $50 million dollar annual budget is not buying enough viewers for God?

“I know your works.” Millions know your works. “I know your reputation.” Millions see you as Christ! They covet your blessings. As soon as they receive the kind of blessings you have (they think), they will do more for the church.

They know they are dead, but they want your life now; NOT Christ’s life now or ever.

3 Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.

4 Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.

Matthew 22: 11 “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”

You may be an active and faithful member of a large church. Your pastor (though held to a higher standard for his preaching) may also be one of the faithful chosen, rather than the MANY called.

You may sit amongst other chosen ones, even in a congregation of most who will not wake up to remember what we have received and heard.  Many are called in every church, but who with ears to hear will truly hear in his heart?

Take heart in Christ’s closing to alert the believers of Sardis:

5 The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

  • As for me and my house – God’s family?

As for me and my house – God’s family?

As Christians we no doubt know Joshua’s quote:

“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15

If you are old enough to remember the Saturday Evening Post you likely recognize the Norman Rockwell painting depicting family prayer at the dinner table.  It is a picture of many faithful Christian families in the mid-twentieth century.

Take a look at the dinner table in your house, for example (and witness).

What do you see in your own 21st c. christian house?

    • Prayer?  Probably not.
    • The whole family seated together? Probably not.
    • Thoughtful family communion with each other? “Communion” would be actually communicating with each other while enjoying our meals together.  Definitely not.

Even in rare moments when all are present at the dinner table, all of us are NOT fully present.

“Family relationships and family time together is most important (second only to our personal relationships with God?)

    • Is that your Christian social witness to your own family? Probably not.

Why do cell phones, internet distractions, video games and TV rob your house of serving the Lord?

“Are 21st century Christian houses incapable of serving the Lord even at their own dinner table?

Joshua and Caleb were two faithful followers of God and Moses who wanted to serve the Lord in the Promised Land.  So many of the Hebrews wanted to go back to their slavery.

After Moses died and Joshua became leader of these people who yearned for the comforts of their slavery, once more all came down to a choice to choose to follow God OR be a rebellious household.  When Joshua’s time was near he gathered the people of the Lord together and spoke.

Joshua begins his call to God’s chosen family with those word to which we must always listen with fear and trembling:

    Thus says THE LORD:

    The challenge:

24:2  ‘Long ago, your fathers…  served other gods… 5 And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in the midst of it, and afterward I brought you out… And you lived in the wilderness a long time. 8 Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites…

11 And you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, and the leaders of Jericho fought against you, and also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And I gave them into your hand…

13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.’

Joshua then: on behalf of the people of God – the house of God – renews the covenant of their forefathers.

14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

THE ALTERNATIVE appears prior to our well-known quote from Joshua 24:15. Joshua outlines choices:

15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord,

choose this day whom you will serve,

whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River,

or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.

But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:15 is the call of a faithful leader to the people of his house to faithfulness.

The people, under Joshua’s leadership respond appropriately… before the witness of God, of his appointed leader of His House and His People… and before the God-appointed leaders who would follow after Joshua’s death.

The covenant of promise and blessing between God and his People is once more confirmed.

The promise is NOT YET fulfilled.  The promised land must now be taken.

The book of Judges records how once more, the people of God break their covenant with God… a familiar and ever-repeating historical disobedience from Eden… through this 21st century day… until the Last Day.

After the time of the Judges, David eventually becomes King.  After the fall of the Kingdom of David, the Prophets tell of a coming King.  After the Sacrifice of Christ Jesus the True King… after the Resurrection of Jesus our true hope and New Covenant…

The promise is NOT YET fulfilled.  Our King’s promised land must now be taken

… filled with the faithful who will not break OUR Covenant of baptism in His Holy Blood.

“Go into all the world, is His Command.

‘and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.’  – Mark 16:15

        Thus says THE LORD

What is OUR response? What is our witness?

When the Apostles sought to replace the traitor Judas they chose another witness.  They had a choice between two faithful witnesses.

Peter, chosen leader of the House of the King spoke:

Acts 1: 21 “So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”

NOW, even two thousand years later…

the promise of the Kingdom NOT YET will soon be fulfilled.

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord,

choose this day whom you will serve…

whether the gods your fathers served…

or the gods of the age in this land where you dwell.

But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

    Jesus IS Lord and King.

And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord… forever.

Choose this day whom you will serve:

What is your Christian Social Witness?

  • Act Accordingly – Acts 1:

    Act Accordingly – Acts 1:

It’s a big important event.  The many details and much planning are well beyond our comprehension.

We know the time is near.  The clock of our daily existence counts down toward a moment of Highest importance which we do not fully understand.  We watch and wait.

This is the setting of the beginning of Acts.  Luke has set the scene, one we can understand more in a 20th c. context of waiting for a launch of men to the moon.  We are most uncertain of the outcome.

We will discover more about the author of Luke-Acts, a two-part book, later in Acts.  Doctor Luke begins with a summary of his Gospel as describing about Jesus until the time “he was taken up into heaven…”

The Apostles have received their instructions after Jesus’ crucifixion, death and resurrection to wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit.  This same Holy Spirit had descended on Jesus at the beginning of His three-year journey toward the Cross.

‘What do we do now, just watch?’ they must have thought. The risen Christ Jesus gives his first orders as King.  He needs to populate His Kingdom. GO find faithful followers who will be baptized – changed permanently – and receive the Holy Spirit.

Our risen Lord affirms: Acts 1: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.

And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

9 After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.

10 As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”

Here is their dear friend and teacher, who they thought had been taken from them by death.  He is risen in great power over sin and death!  His Kingdom begins: but not on earth (for now), but in Heaven.

Who will be subject to the righteous rule of love and grace by the risen Christ Jesus,

    King and Lord?

Our Lord Christ Jesus will return once more for His servants.  Who do you serve? Are you willing?  Are you ready?

    What must you do?
