the Temple
Priests representing ALL of the G-d’s covenant people did their best to offer required sacrifices for their sins:
- against the LORD
- against their fellow man
- and also as petitions for His continued favor.
The veil is one of many requirements of the Old COVENANT, an agreement intended to be adhered to forever.
More importantly, this covenant agreement was made between a people Chosen by the LORD and ALMIGHTY GOD!
– a Scene scripted by Moses
the Veil of the Temple in 1st c. Jerusalem
& studied by every Jew celebrating the Passover
Matthew Levi, like all of the Messiah Jesus’ Jewish followers would have understood the symbolism of the veil as covering between that which is Holy and unholy sinful man.
- of both our fictional story and
- the historical setting of the first century Gospels.
Leviticus – on the Veil
4:5 OJB And the Kohen HaMoshiach shall take of the young bull’s dahm, and bring it to the Ohel Mo’ed; 6 And the kohen shall dip his forefinger in the dahm, and sprinkle of the dahm seven times before Hashem, before the Parochet (curtain) of the Kodesh.
Vayikra 16:2 includes translations
Matthew would have known the great traditions of Moses and he could have recited the teachings of Scripture. Like all Jews of the first century, in addition to conversing in Greek and Latin Matthew would have learned Hebrew in school as a boy, as had his Rabbi Yeshua.
Jesus had also told the Disciples of these mysteries to come.
Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, G2572 that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.
Matthew 10:26 KJV
a brief glance from the Gospels
Gospel of Mark – on the Veil
And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.
Mark 15:38 KJV
To rent, or tear the cloth of one’s garments is a traditional sudden sign of repentance.
- The LORD burns through the VEIL, severing the broken Covenant!
- By the SACRIFICE of the Perfect Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, a VEIL once required between worship by sinful man and the Existing Lord God is torn away by His substitution for our sins!
Luke – on the Veil
Luke 23:44-45 NASB adds this detail — this after the shedding of the blood of the LAMB — this during the Death and SACRIFICE of the Lamb for our sins:
It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the entire land until the ninth hour, because the sun stopped shining; and the veil of the temple was torn in two.
Note: THREE DARK HOURS now while the Sacrifice hangs on the Cross!
46 And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said,
“Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.”
And having said this, He died…
Consider the scene of this Good Friday
- Of our fictional story & a priest witnessing the veil of the Temple torn in two during the darkness and
- The documented true scene of Scripture testified to by many witnesses.
The Gospels do not reveal when the veil was torn. It may very well have been as we read in our fictional illustration at the time of the Sacrifice and Death of Jesus on the Cross!
- ALL had vowed to worship the LORD in this HOLY TEMPLE.
- Yet they rejected the Holy Temple of the Son in the flesh – the Very Image of God come to them in flesh and blood — the BLOOD of Sacrifice.
- And now the Veil within the HOLY OF HOLIES is TORN from top to bottom.
