Witnesses to Jesus’ Crucifixion

From Page 1 of this post here’s the list:

  • Jesus’ mother Mary
  • Mary’s sister, Salome
  • Mary, wife of Clopas
  • Mary of Magdala
  • The Apostle John
  • Roman Soldiers
  • Joseph of Arimathea
  • Nicodemus the Pharisee
  • The Apostle Matthew
  • Simon of Cyrene
Have I left out any witness?

You may think of several. Certainly John would later meet unnamed witnesses to Jesus’ crucifixion, as well as many who witnessed the Lord’s resurrection.

One important witness John documents as a witness to Jesus’ trial is Simon Peter, the rock upon whom the Lord was to build His church. Could Peter have been present for the Crucifixion hidden in the distant crowds?

  • Simon Peter ?

We will return to Peter’s witness when John continues his Gospel to the church, Good News proclaimed even after Peter’s own death on a cross.

Interesting that Matt 26:30 indicates they sang a song before leaving the upper room. It is believed they would sing the Hallel songs, and this would be the final great Hallel psalm 118. As we have followed Jesus in this last week, we have seen him quote from this song about 6 times. It was clearly in His mind – it speaks of the opposition to the Messiah, how he will see victory over death.

Since it has been a long while since I attended Hebrew School, it is probably not surprising that I had to Google “Hallel, Tanakh, and Cohanim” …. but nice to know that I am married to someone who can appreciate my Messianic roots!

  4. Thank you. For those who do not know, a Messianic Jew is one who has come to know Christ (Greek, for Messiah).
