    Some Prophets from Jerusalem

Now in those days, some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

    ACTS 11:27 Legacy Standard Bible

A believer in Christ, follower of a false prophet, worshiper of an ancient god or iconic contemporary might easily miss the significance of these four verses from ACTS of the Apostles.

As you may recall from our previous look at ACTS 11:26, we have been in Antioch for a year now.

    https://talkofjesus.com/an-antioch-blueprint-of-church-evangelism/
Antioch was 3rd largest city in the Roman Empire, a commercial center of trade with all the world

Christians‘ – a label by outsiders

The followers of Jesus were so different from the culture around them.. Clearly the followers of the
Way’ .. people of all cultural backgrounds, weren’t Jews. Gentile observers called them, “little Christs.”

    Tony Merida – Christ-centered Exposition – Exalting Jesus in Acts [p. 162]

As we observed last time these events took place around A.D. 40 just a few years after the resurrection of Jesus. But these are also tumultuous times for the Roman Empire ruling over a largely Greek-speaking world once ruled by Alexander the Great just three centuries earlier.

Conquering Roman leaders would march their captives into Rome and be worshiped as gods. These mere men likened themselves to the many idols of Rome and gods of ancient Greece and eastern lands where Jews were also led as captives centuries before.

“Only gods may choose new gods.

Claudius, as he refused the request of Alexandrian Greeks to dedicate a temple to his divinity
Claudius the by Robert Graves, author of I, Claudius

Tiberius Claudius Nero Caesar Drusus (1 August 10 BC–13 October 54), originally known as Tiberius Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus, was the fourth Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, ruling from 24 January 41 to his death in 54.source

    Claudius

On 24 January 41, Caligula was assassinated in a broad-based conspiracy involving Cassius Chaerea – a military tribune in the Praetorian Guard – and several senators..

The Senate quickly met and began debating a change of government, but this eventually devolved into an argument over which of them would be the new princeps. When they heard of the Praetorians’ claim, they demanded that Claudius be delivered to them for approval, but he refused, sensing the danger that would come with complying.

Some historians, particularly Josephus, claim that Claudius was directed in his actions by the Judean King Herod Agrippa..

[Who we will meet later in Acts of the Apostles during upcoming missions of the Apostle Paul.]

Claudius was the first emperor proclaimed on the initiative of the Praetorian Guard instead of the Senate [of Rome]

    source [more below]

Claudius was concerned with the spread of eastern mysteries within the city and searched for more Roman replacements.. He expelled foreign astrologers, and at the same time rehabilitated the old Roman soothsayers (known as haruspices) as a replacement..

Claudius forbade proselytizing in any religion, even in those regions where he allowed natives to worship freely. [Freedom from {other} religion – sound familiar?}]

It is also reported that at one time he expelled the Jews from Rome. [SEE ACTS 18]

In the world you will have tribulation..

Claudius restored the status of the peaceful Imperial Roman provinces of Macedonia and Achaea as senatorial provinces.

Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. – Acts 11:1

“And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ – Acts 11:16

    Acts 11 continued

27 Now in those days, some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them named Agabus stood up and indicated by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine all over the world. And this took place in the reign of Claudius.

The bold prophesy of future desolation

Who has ever heard of this prophet?

And what brashness to predict some future disaster coming to all the inhabited world!

A POWERFUL prince may predict what disaster he will bring upon the lands he will invade or a lord of legions may cause the devastation of his own citizens, but who can say what the Lord God will do to the whole world?

And who would believe it anyway?

(What can mere mortal men do even knowing of such disasters yet to come?)

    Ἄγαβος? (Never heard of him.)

    Agabus is a Christian prophet.

Luke’s account of this prediction reveals the power behind Agabus’ prediction of famine is none other than the Holy Spirit of God, Who has already intervened with some frequency in Acts of the Apostles.

From their own history the Jews know that God will certainly do what he reveals through his prophets.

دانيال (Daniel) 5 :: Open New Arabic Version (NAV)

When Belshazzar tasted the wine, he said to bring the gold and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem.. They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.

Suddenly the fingers of a man’s hand came out and began writing opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace, and the king saw the back of the hand that did the writing.

.. Then Daniel was brought in before the king..

“This is the interpretation of the message: ‘MENĒ’—God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it.

    Daniel 5:2a,4-5,13a,26 LSB

Joseph – a similar prophecy from Scripture

Even though you may not know of Agabus you likely know the preparation of Egypt due to the prophesy of Joseph. The Church, too, will take Agabus at his word through the Spirit and prepare itself from the famine yet to come.

التكوين (Genesis) 41 :: Open New Arabic Version (NAV)

Now it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh had a dream.. And the ugly and [lean of flesh] thin cows ate up the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh awoke.

..seven ears of grain came up on a single stalk, plump and good. And behold, seven ears, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them.

And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, but no one can interpret it; yet I have heard it said about you, that you hear a dream and that you can interpret it.”

    Genesis 41:1a,4,5b-6,15

Joseph, Daniel, Agabus & the true Prophets of God

What is it that ALL these true Prophets of the Lord God have in common?

Daniel had reminded Belshazzar son of Nebuchadnezzar how the LORD had given his father power to rule.

“[lit. You king] O king, the Most High God granted the kingdom, grandeur, glory, and majesty to Nebuchadnezzar your father.

    Daniel 5:18 LSB

Joseph, Son of Israel (Jacob) gives Pharaoh a similar answer:

Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me; God will answer concerning the welfare of Pharaoh.”

    Genesis 41:16 LSB

The prophesies of the true prophet of God are neither self-serving nor words of their own AND the prophesy of the LORD will always take place as the Lord has revealed to his prophet.

Then Pharaoh named Joseph Zaphenath-paneah [the god speaks and he lives; treasury of the glorious rest; savior of the age]

    Genesis 41:45a; link above to Strong’s H6847

The hundreds of disciples of the risen Christ who had received the Holy Spirit all knew that the prophesy of Agabus would be fulfilled, just as prophesies of saviors of their past had come true.

    THEREFORE

Like Joseph, the disciples of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (whom some present had witnessed after the Lord’s resurrection) obediently prepared for their certain future.

And as any of the disciples had means, each of them determined to send a contribution for the service of the brothers living in Judea.

    Acts 11:29 LSB

Antioch - Crossroads of Christianity and map of 1sr c. AD Roman Empire
.. and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. Acts of the Apostles 11:25b NASB

These men and women joined in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit believed this prophesy of Agabus that a famine was about to come upon the whole Roman world. They must support the Apostles of Jesus and fellow followers of The Way in Jerusalem. For these men would be blamed more than most and persecuted as Christians have already suffered even more so in these days to come.

And as for their contribution for fellow saints in Judea:

And this they did, sending it in charge of Barnabas and Saul to the elders.

These are politically troubling times not only in Jerusalem but in Rome and throughout the Roman Empire.

King Herod (as we have just learned) is all caught up in the politics and religion issues with Claudius, Emperor and lord Caesar of the whole world; which, of course, includes Jerusalem.

  • Apocalypse 6 – the Face of Justice

If I sharpen My flashing sword,
And My hand takes hold on justice,
I will render vengeance on My adversaries,
And I will repay those who hate Me.

    Deuteronomy 32:41 NASB

    What is already begun

And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

    Revelation 6:4 KJV

A second horseman who wields a great sword is sent out to take peace from the earth. Men will kill one another and his horse is blood red.

    • The first living creature was like a lion;
    • the second living creature was like an ox;
    • the third living creature had a face like a man..
    • A creature like a lion sends out a rider with a bow
    • a second living creature like an ox gives a powerful sword to his rider.

Now another living creature not a man, for like the others it has six wings and is full of eyes — a living creature with the face of a man — a terrible face like one never seen by any man created in God’s image — the third living creature hands the one who sat on a black horse a pair of scales.

He will weigh what is to be given to men of the earth.

    The Terrible Face of Justice

A lion has roared! Who will not fear?
The Lord God has spoken! Who can do anything but prophesy? – Amos 3:8 NASB

We are NOT IMMUNE to the #pandemic of sin!
Martin Luther King "I have a dream" speech

In March of A.D. 2020, I interrupted introduction to the Gospel of John with prophesy of Amos (linked above).

“But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream.” – quoting Amos 6:24

Now, just eleven months later, I maintain the appropriateness of these parallels to US.

    Pictures of JUSTICE & JUDGMENT!

What YOU think about Justice or about God or even about Jesus may turn out to be just POLITICS.

The JUSTICE of the LORD GOD will weigh the events of these last days differently than the blind Judgment of mankind.

Contemplation of Justice and Authority of Law

Even the US Supreme Court entrance displays the imagery of contemplation of justice.

    A book of laws supports
her left arm and a figure of blindfolded Justice is
    in her right hand.

Once the victorious and worthy Lamb of God takes the Throne and opens the BOOK of the LAW, a heavenly HIGH COURT now shows imagery to the Apostle John. One with scales in hand will equally weigh what remains for the PEOPLE after the ravages of war. It is a dreadful sight!

    The Third Seal

    Scarcity on Earth

    Revelation 6:

5 When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.”

Remember, the awesome creature with the face of a man?

So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand.

    Revelation 6:5b NKJV

Now remember that the four living creatures surround the Throne day and night worshiping the Lamb.

6 And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying,

“A measure of wheat for a denarius, and three measures of barley for a denarius; and do not damage the oil and the wine.”

    Famine & Scarcity

The available food is being measured on the scales equally for ALL, because there is hardly enough for ANY.

The denarius was a penny — and yet it was one man’s wages for one day!

The poor will be starving for lack of the “necessities” while those in powerful control will be enjoying “luxuries.”

John Brown :: Revelation 6:3-6 – source: BlueLetter Bible
Additional Commentary of John Brown – Excerpts on the Third Seal

    1. This time the horseman carries no weapons. This time it’s a pair of scales!

    a) At the onset of war there is always the promise of a “better world” and a better economy but famine always follows war!!!

    (1) It has been the case in China, North Korea, East Germany, Cuba, and Vietnam.

    (2) The scales as well as the black horse speaks of a time great death upon the earth!

    (a) Lamentations 5:10 Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine. (KJV)

    (b) Beating the plowshares into swords doesn’t leave much time for farming!

    (c) There are already, in many countries, long lines for simple things like bread and butter and milk.

    (d) Men, women and children are starving to death all over the world and it has become “common” and accepted!

    What Next?

As if this were not fearful enough, we know that only three of the four living creatures have called John to come and see the apocalypse of this certain future.

Even if much is symbolic rather than literal, the remaining four seals of the book yet to be revealed bring all creatures in God’s image to contemplate the very justice of Almighty God.

The Curse of Disease and Death – 3

Moses & Joseph, Two Paths to the Palace

Joseph suffered prior to his blessing more like Job than Moses. He had no choice in his suffering, except his choice of response. Isn’t that how our suffering most impacts others, by our godly response? Blessed be the Lord!

In part two of this series about our attitude toward disease and death we examined Moses’ story from Exodus. Unlike Job, Moses chose to leave the riches of the palace of Pharaoh where he was raised. Moses could have followed a royal path which may have made him Pharaoh. He chose instead to identify himself with his people and his God.

You may be familiar with how Moses came to live with the daughter of Pharaoh to be raised as her son.

    Exodus 1:

15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him…

22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”

Moses’ birth story begins in Exodus 2 with a baby protected in an ark of wicker retrieved from the bullrushes by none other than Pharaoh’s own daughter. As stated previously. Moses was raised in a palace only to leave at age forty then return again at age eighty to challenge Pharaoh on behalf of the Lord. Moses would live out the remainder of his 120 years in the wilderness.

A careful reading of Exodus 2 will reveal that the Hebrews were persecuted by the Egyptians because they were afraid of them, for they had been blessed by the Lord. A look back into Genesis will reveal a much different path to Pharaoh’s palace by a man the Lord used to bless the Hebrew nation in Egypt, Joseph.

Jacob (Israel) From Canaan to Egypt

    Genesis 37:

Jacob lived in the land of his father’s sojournings, in the land of Canaan…

.. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers..

So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.

18 They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him. 19 They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. 20 Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits…

26 Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him. 28 Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.

    Joseph Sold

The whole story contains many more exciting details for the reader (or listener). Most of us first heard of Joseph during our childhood instruction in the Bible. As for Joseph, the hopelessness of the situation would seem to be insurmountable, that is, except that the Lord redeems Joseph for His own purpose.

Death had seemed certain more than once. Even in survival as a slave, Joseph would suffer injustice yet be redeemed by the Lord.

Genesis 39:1 Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, had bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there…

20 And Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison.

    Genesis 41:

After two whole years, Pharaoh dreamed.. seven other cows, ugly and thin.. seven ears of grain.. he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was none who could interpret them to Pharaoh.

An official who remembered Joseph’s interpretation of a dream now tells Pharaoh of Joseph. The Lord showed Joseph the meaning of Pharaoh’s dream. (You don’t think you could have guessed from visions of cows eating other cows and random pictures of grain, do you?)

The Lord brings famine to both Canaan, home of Jacob and Joseph’s brothers. Jacob’s son Joseph prepares Egypt for the same seven years of severe famine ahead and manages stored resources for the people to whom he was sold.

    a 2017 famine FYI

Mandari fishermen on Nile River in South Sudan

I mentioned in Part 2 the importance of the 4160 mile long (6670 km) Nile River basin to life in Egypt. (The Jordan river valley was also important to Canaan and the small countries bordering the Jordan to a lesser extent.) Both crops and herds of animals must have both the water and the grain which grows in these fertile areas. Yet when drought comes and the rivers dry up many suffer. Many die, both animals and people die due to lack of water and too little food.

    Did you know:

UN: World facing greatest humanitarian crisis since 1945

[ctt title=”Millions suffering in famine and war. Many will die in 2017. Why does the world ignore it?” tweet=”https://ctt.ec/dNle1+” coverup=”dNle1″]

Humanitarian groups fear this could be just the beginning: a lack of water – blamed partially on the El Nino weather phenomenon – has killed off livestock and crops, leaving 6.2 million people in urgent need of help.

The greater causes of suffering relate to war, civil war, greed, oil, extremism, religious differences which cause one sect (of several) to oppose other sects to the death (so to speak) and in fact starve them out.

Is genocide of African terror so different in 21st c. S. Sudan, Yemen, Somalia and so many other shoreline divided rich and poor so different from ancient Pharaohs ordering deaths of opponents?

    The Lord Prevails

Returning to Joseph’s story, let us recall how we do not know or understand the ways of the Lord. Not until the end of the story of Job do we learn that the Lord brings Job double blessing. Job didn’t know why he suddenly suffered. We knew from the beginning that satan was behind Job’s suffering.

Pharaoh caused the great suffering of the Hebrew people in Moses’ time. The Lord brought suffering to Egypt. Pharaoh opposed the Lord; not as a man, but as if a man or a leader could be a god to his own people suffering though plagues and death.

A Nero, Hitler or Muhammed murdering innocents is no less opposed to the Lord! Even kings of Israel and kings of Judah “did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

Yet Joseph, a slave in Egypt promoted to the palace, becomes a type of redeemer for the people of the lands he loved. Yes, the lands Joseph loved – both Goshen, a state of Egypt where the Lord would multiply the Hebrew people, and a promised land along the Jordan from which he unwillingly emigrated.

    Forgiveness and Redemption

Joseph’s story reveals first a reunion of forgiveness with his brothers who sold him into captivity.

But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. – Genesis 50:19-20

Joseph’s reply to his brothers from his own position and power:  “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?”[ctt title=” A redeemer does not judge his enemies, but leaves judgment to the Lord.” tweet=”Neither Moses nor Joseph redeemed Israel, but the LORD.” coverup=”367rc”]

The curse of sin: War, Disease, Famine, Suffering & Death

From Adam to this very day: many hurt, many suffer, many will die.

Who is your Redeemer, dear brother, beloved sister – who will redeem you from the enemy of your sin?

Christ Jesus, He IS! For our Lord shed His Blood of Sacrifice for us while we were yet sinners, enemies of the Lord.

Like Israel, a man with twelve sons and like a people enslaved by injustice, the Lord has passed over a sinful flesh condemned to die in our sin.

Christ Jesus IS risen to eternal life and as our Redeemer and Judge the Lord pours over us the Blood of His own righteous and immeasurable outpouring of His own love for our eternal soul.

Joseph’s brothers eventually bowed down before their brother, humble before the Lord.

Won’t you bow down before Christ Jesus, loving Lord and Savior of the Hebrews and of the Nations?
