    Consecration, Ceremonies and Rites

Two weeks ago in my Saturday Post SERIES addressing the jargon of the church I asked, “Can you picture a process of ‘consecration?’

    • You probably picture consecration as a rite of sorts, most specifically a public religious rite.

That’s right and an important view of occasions of consecration.

We also defined anointing, but today I'm not quite ready for 'sanctification' without first briefly examining what some view as consecration in this Common Era.

Even though some rites seem Biblical, some Common Era christians claim their rights in place of observing a religious consecration to God.

And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.

    Exodus 28:41 KJV

    Consecration a Public Picture

    What do you see here?

    Short answer:

    • Two religious ceremonies,
      • one Jewish and
      • one (perhaps) christian.

Consecration, whether Jewish, Christian, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist — Orthodox, Reformed, unaffiliated — Roman Catholic, Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterian or evangelical — atheist or naturist — – consecration is part of a public proclamation of faith — a religious rite.

    Who is consecrated?

The answer here seems simple enough. In this instance, the priests who are exclusive Aaron and his sons.

And by extension into an Old Testament context, the Levites are the ONLY Priests anointed and consecrated to serve the LORD on behalf of the church (that is, the Hebrew chosen) as a separate and holy people to God our Father of all creation.

The LORD will judge some Priest and strike them down to death in some instances. The Priest of God and especially the one High Priest bear a weight of accountability for the entire congregation of the Hebrew people.

    What is consecrated?

The garments of the priests – the linen cloths and holy garments.

On certain occasions the priest must consecrate all the people and everything in the place of worship.

Even certain times carry an obligation of consecration to the Lord our God:

The LORD instructed Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When a man or woman makes a special vow, a Nazirite vow, to consecrate himself to the LORD..

“He is holy to the LORD during the time of consecration.

    Numbers 6:1-2 ,6 CSB

Many Christians speak the priestly blessing of Numbers

    More than simply a benediction

    The LORD said to Moses,
Say to Aaron and his sons, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,

    Numbers 6:22-23 RSV
the LORD bless you and keep you.. AND be gracious to you - a highest grace of God

SAY to Aaron and his sons (the Priests)” — “SAY to them (the people of Israel)” receiving the blessing of the LORD through HIS command!

DO NOT MISS the weight what the LORD says here.

דָבַר dâbar, daw-bar’; a primitive root; perhaps properly, to arrange; but used figuratively (of words), to speak; rarely (in a destructive sense) to subdue:—answer, appoint, bid, command, commune, declare, destroy, give, name, promise, pronounce, rehearse, say, speak, be spokesman, subdue, talk, teach, tell, think, use (entreaties), utter

Now you may have recited this COVENANTAL BLESSING in your earlier days; perhaps in English, Latin, some other language, or even in its original Hebrew of the Torah:

    יְבָרֶכְךָ יְהוָה וְיִשְׁמְרֶךָ׃ ס

    יָאֵר יְהוָה פָּנָיו אֵלֶיךָ וִיחֻנֶּךָּ׃ ס

    יִשָּׂא יְהוָה פָּנָיו אֵלֶיךָ וְיָשֵׂם לְךָ שָׁלוֹם׃ ס

    Yᵊhōvâ bāraḵ šāmar

Instructions of the One Son of God, our only Lord and Savior Christ Jesus

    a Catholic conversation

“I think a lot of people have a problem with consecration to Mary.

Fr. H. She’s not Jesus. Gender neutral language, okay, she’s not Jesus-

we don’t want to be gender neutral with the mother of God.

    Fr. H. No we don’t.

It’s not directed apparently at least when we say consecration to Mary, maybe you’re going to straighten that out. But the other thing is we have no idea what the word consecration means. What does that mean concentration to?

Fr. H. Well, this is an important topic. And of course, but that’s not the most important aspect of the topic… The term consecration comes in mostly in the 17th century… All right. So that means giving everything over to someone else.

But the word consecration in Catholic theology, and I really don’t like to question what has become a term in popular devotion. And I’m perfectly happy to say consecrate yourself to Mary, it’s a perfectly good expression, but probably the word entrustment is more precise.

“Consecration has an expression that is meant for such things which are given over to God, in the service of God, liturgically especially in him only…

Father‘ H. – Roman Catholic theologian

    Is every consecration ‘Holy?’

CONSECRATION of Priests according to Scripture, consecration to holiness in ceremonial rites of the Church, leadership of Christ’s flock — like with the Levites, NONE to be taken lightly.

Numbers 16 Korah's rebellion picture of pit

    Convocations of Bishops

Error by many Bishops of Rome.

Many Priests and Pastors of all Common Era christian churches have worn the shepherd’s robes of heresy with cunning common rebellion against Jesus Christ, Who IS and WAS and WILL be.

Do we not commonly witness these in everyday culture?

Who so quickly dismisses Scripture and twists the Lord’s instruction?

ἐπίσκοπος – episkopos – masculine noun

A woman must learn in quietness and full submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; she is to remain quiet.

    1 Timothy 2:11-12 BSB

rite of consecration of Bishop in the Anglican Church

Now a bishop must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, dignified, hospitable, an apt teacher.. He must manage his own household well.. He must not be a recent convert, or he may be puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil…

excerpt from the First Epistle of Paul to Timothy 3: RSV

    Pronouns: this, these, etc.
Yet Christ's Apostle is clear in his instruction concerning consecration of leadership of the Church.

God's word is clear as to the humble roles of Christ's servants, both husbands (of a woman) and wives (of a man). NO adultery. NO divorce. NO fornication. NO sinful flesh usurping God-given roles.

NO idolatry of Rite (or of no rite). NO worship of Saint (capital 'S') or Angel. NO idolatry of self or knowledge or earth or sea or tree. NO following of prophet, for the false proclaim false gods.

    JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!

OUR CONSECRATION to GOD is to HOLINESS! And in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit we worship ONLY HIM.

  • Jesus Christ Lord – 3 Christ of the Christian Church

Jesus Christ Lord – 3 Christ of the Christian Church

Christians of the early Church proclaimed Jesus Christ Lord confessing, “JESUS is Lord.”

    • What is your relationship to the Son of God and Son of Man?

    Part 1 UPDATED 25 September 2024 CE

Previously I pointed out thoughtful teaching QUESTIONS about GOD from the Westminster Shorter Catechism.

    Roles and Relationships of JESUS

In Part 2 we read about Jesus Christ from the Nicene Creed.

“.. of one substance with the Father,..”

JESUS relates to mankind in roles summarized as King, Prophet and Priest; but none is more foundational than Christ of God.

    the Trinity of the LORD

Church and Biblical teaching are both clear and mysterious in describing GOD’s ROLES of relationship within HIMSELF, that is:

    • FATHER to the SON
    • SON to the SPIRIT
    • Holy Spirit
      • to the Father
      • and to the Son

Some Christians know and experience a personal relationship to THE ONE GOD. The HOLY SPIRIT speaks to the heart [spirit ] of a uniquely created man or woman, a mortal made of flesh and blood.

    Church Doctrine (teaching)

In Part 3 of this doctrinal post about the one LORD JESUS CHRIST we will look at scriptural teaching concerning CHRIST from historic catechisms of the Church AND most foundationally, from God’s word in the BIBLE.

Catechisms provide studied ANSWERS to student QUESTIONS

Like ANY learning, the Questions and Answers of a catechism we study and memorize as students seeking a deeper understanding of God.

    • 21. Who is the redeemer of God’s elect?
      • The only redeemer of God’s elect is the Lord Jesus Christ, who, being the eternal Son of God, became man, and so was, and continueth to be, God and man in two distinct natures, and one person, forever.
    • 23. What offices doth Christ execute as our redeemer?
      • Christ, as our redeemer, executeth the offices of a prophet, of a priest, and of a king, both in His estate of humiliation and exaltation.

What does the Church teach? (Church Doctrine)

Today we’ll study the roles of JESUS’ personal relationship with YOU, with me and with all followers of the Lord.

Let's begin with a review from the NICENE CREED with its EARLY UNIVERSAL (Catholic) agreement as to the Person and Roles of Christ and God.

THE CREED OF NICAEA – AGREED AT THE COUNCIL IN 325

Until the early 20th century, it was universally assumed that the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed (the more accurate term) was an enlarged version of the Creed of Nicaea, which was promulgated at the Council of Nicaea (325). It was further assumed that this enlargement had been carried out at the Council of Constantinople (381) with the object of bringing the Creed of Nicaea up to date in regard to heresies about the Incarnation and the Holy Spirit that had arisen since the Council of Nicaea. - source: Britannica

Offices, Titles, Roles and Relationships of JESUS

As is my practice, linked DEFINITIONS to clarify.

    Christ our Redeemer

“As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives,

And [after] the last He will rise up over the dust of this world.

    Job 19:25 LSB

Redeemer is a specifically Scriptural reference to a person acting to save a person or people from the hold, control or responsibility of another.

The Prophet Isaiah points forward to the Holy One of Israel as the redeemer of Israel for the chosen ones of God.

    Lord κύριος

Jesus asked them, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”

He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying:

‘The LORD said to my Lord,
    “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool” ’

Gospel of Matthew 11:9 NKJV [7-15 in contest] JESUS, speaking of John, even comparing John to Elijah and citing Scripture from O.T. Prophets.

    • What does the BIBLE teach us about this office of JESUS?

And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying,

That a great prophet G4396 is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

Gospel of Luke 7:16 KJV [vs 11-17 in context] when JESUS raised a boy to life from his funeral casket

“YOU ARE A PRIEST G2409 FOREVER

ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”

    Hebrews 5:7 LSB

High Priest or Chief Priest – ἀρχιερεύς – archiereus

Now the main point in what is being said is this: we have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a minister in the holy places and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man.

    Hebrews 8:1-2 LSB

    King

    king βασιλεύς – basileus
Strong's Number G935 matches the Greek βασιλεύς (basileus),
which occurs 118 times in 107 verses in the TR Greek.

And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING G935 OF THE JEWS.

Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John

    Outline of Biblical Usage

    1. leader of the people, prince, commander, lord of the land, king
probably from G939 (through the notion of a foundation of power); a sovereign (abstractly, relatively, or figuratively):—king.

JESUS showed POWER on earth, signs and miracles no created man could do except the expected Messiah of GOD !

The King, as Judeans had hoped, would be more powerful than Herod the Great (who rebuilt the Temple, a civil project still under construction under one of his sons (King Herod). Jerusalem and all the lands and their kings were subject to ROME and its Caesars.

    “Hosanna,

    Ὡσαννά εὐλογημένος ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ

    JESUS, according to God’s Word

Wouldn't HOLY SCRIPTURE; written, God-breathed words of the BIBLE (faithfully translated); provide the best, true guidance of how Christian should proclaim JESUS?

Consider how the New Testament speaks about Jesus - source
    • “Jesus” occurs 980 times in 940 verses in the LSB.
    • 942 times in the KING JAMES VERSION
    • 1000+ times in translations substituting ‘Jesus‘ for prepositions such as ‘He.’

    • Jesus” AND “prophet” occurs in 5 verses in ‘The Gospels” in the LSB.
      • and JESUS never uses it Himself as a title, only confirming this office.
    • Jesus” AND “priest” occurs 30 times in 14 verses in the LSB.
    • He is never addressed as a ‘Priest,’ but the letter of HEBREWS and other Scripture makes clear that JESUS is both Priest and Sacrifice.

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us take hold of our confession.

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things like we are, yet without sin.

    Hebrews 4:14-15 LSB

    • Jesus” AND “king” occurs 18 times in 8 verses in the LSB
    • Jesus never refers to Himself as King yet acknowledges the recognition of Him by others.

So Jesus, knowing that they were going to come and take Him by force to make Him king G935, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.

    Gospel of John 6:15 LSB – G035 – basileus

    • When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. – Luke 5:8

  • An Adjudicator of Grace in Every Era

An Adjudicator of Grace in Every Era

What is the first SCRIPTURE that comes to mind when I ask you to tell me about GRACE?

Go ahead and COMMMENT with the first BIBLE verse YOU recall.

& Tell us what it speaks to YOU that exemplifies GRACE.

Last time in my initial post of this SERIES I introduced GRACE linked to its root words of both the OLD and NEW TESTAMENTS of the Holy Bible.

Since only 15 of the 132 verses naming Grace occur in the Old Testament chances are that the first Bible verse you might SHARE about GRACE will come from the NEW TESTAMENT.

    New Covenant GRACE

DYK that “Testamentδιαθήκηdiatheke is the rendering of a Hebrew word meaning a “covenant” or agreement?

Was the grace of God different in the OLD TESTAMENT?

Has the grace of God changed in the Common Era of our post-Christian correctness?

You may as well offer your comments on those two questions as well.

But before I take on any contemporary question of grace in the Common Era let’s take a look back to one of the oldest illustrations of the Old Testament.

    Old Covenant GRACE

JOB – a man blameless, upright, fearing God, and turning away from evil

A man there hath been in the land of Uz — Job his name — and that man hath been perfect and upright — both fearing God, and turning aside from evil.

    Job 1:1 Youngs Literal Translation

    PERFECT, UPRIGHT AND BLAMELESS?

That could NOT have been this fallen sinner of the Common Era?

    WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Job was a penultimate Old Testament example of a righteous man as GOD requires of those who worship Him.

    Roger@TalkofJesus.com

IF any man deserved GRACE it certainly would have been Job.

Yet Satan is as involved in this unseen story of a mere man as he was in the events of Eden.

Some Christians will no more consider the impact of unseen evil in our daily lives than did Job's friends and speculative advisors.

But other than your QUESTION about this post that would be a discussion for another day.)

Have YOU ever heard OR given such ill-conceived advice as Job’s advisors?

Men and women typically try to conceive answers concerning God’s providence with little consideration or understanding of God’s redeeming grace.

    Friendly Unhelpful Observations

“Remember now, who ever perished being innocent? Or where were the upright wiped out? – Job 4:4

In an earthly sense, is this not an everyday occurrence in every era?

    Job answers:

    “For the despairing man lovingkindness should be from his friend;
But he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

    Job 6:14 LSB

Lovingkindness received from a friend is surly the fruit of grace. But Job does not receive it here.

(Yet do the so-called good men and women have their rewards in this brief life?)

If you would seek God earnestly
And plead for the grace of the Almighty,
If you are pure and upright,
Indeed now He would rouse Himself for you
And make your righteous abode at peace.
    Though your beginning was insignificant,
Yet your end will increase greatly.

Job 8:5-7 LSB (ill-conceived advice of a friend and advisor to Job)

Ah! — Here Job’s smiling friend offers him a cheap grace of the Almighty bringing His power into his friend’s life NOW!

Job’s best Life could be filled with blessings before his end in death (never mentioned).

Is GRACE simply an increase of life’s everyday blessings?

Job Replies There Is No Adjudicator

Picture now a scene in the Heavenly Court of the Old Testament BEFORE God’s revelation of a perfect Priest and Mediator of Christ the only Son of a better Sacrifice for man’s sin.

JOB ASKS THE ENDURING QUESTION OF EVERY AGE:

But how can a man be in the right before God?

    Job 9:2b LSB

If one desired to contend with Him,
He could not answer Him once in a thousand times.

Wise in heart and mighty in power,
Who has stiffened his neck against Him and been at peace?

Where do YOU stand before God

Job continues his hopeless defense (without the Perfect Powerful Advocate pleading his case for him:

the One who removes the mountains.. who shakes the earth.. out of its place..

Who alone stretches out the heavens,
And tramples down the waves of the sea..

10 Who does great things, unsearchable,
    And wondrous works, innumerable.

    11 Were He to sweep by me, I would not see Him;
Were He to move past me, I would not perceive Him.
12 Were He to snatch away, who could turn Him back?
Who could say to Him, ‘What are You doing?’

After Job's irrefutable argument worthy of any courtroom case he then makes an astounding statement concerning GRACE before the One Lord God.

    “For though I were right,
    I could not answer [plead my case];
I would have to plead for the grace of my judge.

    Job 9:15 LSB
I would make supplication to my judge. - KJV

I would beg mercy of my Judge. – NKJV

Even if I were right, I would have no defense.
I could only plead for mercy.
says the New Living Translation of Job’s silent plea.

“I must appeal for mercy to my accuser and judge” suggests Job.

The MERCY of the LORD relates to HIS graciousness rather than OUR righteousness.

Many would attempt to plead their own case before the Judge!

I would — possibly even as I accuse every accuser who has brought me before the Authority to determine MY GUILT and PUNISH MY SIN.

Of course ALL of us tend to demand JUSTICE for all, i.e. ‘everybody else’, even while covering every personal trespass against others and expecting MERCY in the disposition of our own case.

Even in a Court of Law in a great America of the past …

He who represents himself has a fool for a client - Abraham Lincoln

Job, A RIGHTEOUS MAN (which NONE OF US are), presents a stellar defense before God, the Father of all mercies.

HOWEVER first, the JUDGE of all men has something to say to the accused who had asked to represent himself before God.

Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,

“Who is this that darkens counsel
    By words without knowledge?

Now gird up your loins like a man, And I will ask you, and you make Me know!

After a lengthy introduction to JUSTICE by the JUDGE OF ALL MEN Job will relent in his plea with an appropriate answer.

    WHO NEEDS GRACE?”

The simple answer to our own case in every instance is that WE ALL NEED Mercy, Forgiveness and Grace.

The legal question before the Heavenly Seat of Judgment is:

WHO can represent a SINNER so that I might receive MERCY and GRACE?

Then Yahweh answered Job and said,

2 “Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty?
Let him who reproves God answer it.”

Job recognizes the flaw in attempting to be his own counsel.

Then Job answered Yahweh and said,

“Behold, I am insignificant; what can I respond to You?

I place my hand over my mouth. Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; Even twice, and I will add nothing more.”

    Job 40:3-5 LSB

JOB, A RIGHTEOUS MAN, has a dilemma and can only keep silent before his Judge.

In fact, Job has no Advocate and therefore must rely on any undeserved mercy from God the Father of all mankind before Whom he stands guilty.

Is Job’s judicial dilemma common to YOU — even in this 21st century — post-Christian –Common Era?

    NEXT:

God-willing, we will defer to our only Mediator and Advocate

“Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven,

And my advocate is on high.

    Job 16:19 LSB
