The Son of Perdition

I quoted John 17 from the NASB where the Lord refers to Judas as ‘the son of perdition.’ Why haven’t we heard Jesus use this before?

In fact, from the generally more convicting language of the King James Version of the Bible you would have heard it more frequently.

Peter, in later letter to the church states:

But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

2 Peter 3:7

Some like Judas betray all righteousness in a single condemning act! They become like Judas, a type of anti-Christ.

Would you also oppose Christ Jesus, though you claim to be a ‘christian’ – a false follower betraying the Lord in the world?

See what Jesus meant by His description of such sons of perdition by including Judas.

Perdition

ἀπώλεια

ἀπώλεια apṓleia, ap-o’-li-a; from a presumed derivative of G622;

ruin or loss (physical, spiritual or eternal):—damnable(-nation), destruction, die, perdition, X perish, pernicious ways, waste.

In part by definition, a son of perdition is destined to:

  • the destruction which consists in the loss of eternal life
  • eternal misery,
  • perdition, the lot of those excluded from the kingdom of God: Revelation 17:8, 11, cf. Revelation 19:20; Philippians 3:19; 2 Peter 3:16;
  • a man doomed to eternal misery

What is your witness of the world?

Dare you call yourself a ‘christian,’ without taking up the Cross of Christ?

Judas thought to take the Kingdom of God by force. He thought to gain power and position through his relationship to Jesus, a potentially powerful King of the Jews.

Judas wanted to force the Lord’s hand to ascend a Throne of all influence.

He wasted his witness for Christ Jesus.

Do you, beloved believer, claim Jesus for your gain in this brief life?

Are YOU a son or daughter of perdition following scoffers like Judas who challenge God to fix the world your way NOW?

Destruction of these last days

Peter, who denied Christ then repented and was restored, writes to the church:

3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

And saying, Where is the promise of his coming?

Peter continues his caution to the faithful who would keep watch:

for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Second letter of Peter to the Church 2:7 KJV

You know the destined destruction of Judas.

With whom do you allign your witness for the Lord Jesus Christ?
