Are you a Godly man? (Or Godly woman, is your discipline and witness strong enough to SHARE and encourage your husband or the men in your life: sons, friends, co-workers, brothers saved and unsaved?) This book will help.

Let’s start with this: 1 Timothy 4:  Instead, train yourself to be godly. 8 “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”

10 Disciplines of a Godly Man – (link has a brief audio file where you can listen to a sample from the book)

Our Men’s Bible study is taking a look at this tool for our faith.  I can recommend it to you not only because we are examining the principles & scriptures, but also knowing the author, Kent Hughes, is one of the godly leading men  of my daughter’s church, College Church in Wheaton IL.

  1. I learned from a brother in the Lord & spiritual mentor to begin my day in prayer & the Bible.

This week, God willing, I’ll list these 10 Disciplines of a Godly Man

    1. DISCIPLINE OF PURITY
Sensuality is the biggest obstacle to godliness among Christian men.

    READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8

  2. 2. DISCIPLINE OF RELATIONSHIPS
    Ephesians 5:25-31; 6:4
    Hebrews 10:25

  3. 3. DISCIPLINE OF THE MIND
1 Cor. 2:16 – Think about these things
    Philippians 4:8
You can never have a Christian mind without reading the Scriptures regularly…

  4. 4. DISCIPLINE OF DEVOTION
    Meditation internalizes the Word.
    Psalm 40:8; Ephesians 6:18-20

“Many men never have an effective devotional life…” – This was me, until our weekly men’s Bible study.

Now, it is a ‘must begin’ for my day & a regular part of other times in my day. I recommend it.

Discipline of these comments: M-F, this week & next, God willing.

  5. 5. DISCIPLINE OF INTEGRITY

We must let God’s Word draw our lines of conduct.

    Proverbs 12:22; Ephesians 4:15; Psalm 15:4

  6. 6. DISCIPLINE OF THE TONGUE

    James 1:26

(Offer what you say first to God’s altar.)

  7. DISCIPLINE OF WORK

    Genesis 1:1-2:2; 1 Cor. 10:21

Our vocation is a Divine calling.

  8. 8. DISCIPLINE OF PERSEVERANCE

    Hebrews 12:1-3 –
    Divest!
    Run! (also 2 Timothy 4:7)
    Focus!
    Consider!

  9. DISCIPLINE OF CHURCH

You don’t HAVE TO go to church to be Christian OR go home to be married. But in both cases IF you do NOT, you will have a very poor relationship.

(my emphasis on Hughes’ thought… I have lived the broken relationships where one was unwilling to spend time with either relationship.)

How is your relationship with the people of your church?

  10. DISCIPLINE OF GIVING

    2 Corinthians 8:5; 9:7 and Acts 20:35

Giving disarms the power of money.
